Northern Cyprus vs Occupied Cyprus

[edit]

Greetings--is there an existing RFC, discussion, or accepted standard regarding what to call the Turkish-controlled portion of Cyprus? At Sinking of the Filo Jet, the article was written using Northern Cyprus to refer to this area (e.g. "residents of Northern Cyprus", "the port of Kyrenia in Northern Cyprus", "Northern Cyprus police", etc.

Two editors have changed it to "Occupied Cyprus", stating that UN resolutions 541 and 550 prohibit referring to this area as an independent republic, and others have reverted them. Given the existence of an article entitled Northern Cyprus and the sheer number of other articles using the term (6000) versus Occupied Cyprus (36), it would seem the latter is preferred, but I'm posing the question here as a first step towards dispute resolution. The fact that it’s used more times doesn’t make it correct, as the UN resolutions 541 and 550 call it incorrect and only accept the terms “Cyprus” or “Occupied Cyprus” as legit. The fact that an article called “Northern Cyprus” exists , doesn’t make it a legitimate country since it’s not recognized by any Country except from Turkey , and there are multiple organizations like the United Nations, prohibiting recognizing this “republic “. In case that it’s written in geographical terms, it’s useless, and if it’s written in political terms , it’s considered worldwide invalid. ~2026-35663-88 (talk) 09:36, 4 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
I see the sources tent to refer it as "northern Cyprus" --ToprakM ✉ 16:32, 6 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
