This project contributes to the global Women in Red movement which aims to close the gender gap in Wikipedia content.

User:Winnieswikiworld and User:Thewickerwoman created this project as they noticed that the histories, biographies and stories of women during wartime were underrepresented online.

They started by creating biography articles about the first New Zealand nurses to see active service in WWI when they were stationed at Apia Hospital in Samoa. As they researched, they started to uncover more incredible women who helped shape Aotearoa's war history. Here are some of the project highlights so far:


Nina May Palmer

Nina May Palmer was a New Zealand nurse who served in both the First Balkan War and World War I.

Louise Alexa McNie

Louise Alexa McNie (15 July 1879- 9 May 1942) was a nurse in the New Zealand Army Nursing Service Corps and the Samoan Expeditionary Forces in 1914.

Catherine Frances Bryers

Catherine Frances Bryers was a Warrant Officer and pioneering figure within the New Zealand Women's Auxiliary Air Force during World War II.
