Leteisi

Thank you for creating an article about Leteisi. All the sources you cite, however, describe it as fabric, not a dress. Leteisi is the name in Botswana of a fabric traditional in much of Southern Africa. Wikipedia already has a detailed article about the fabric under its South African name Shweshwe. Therefore, I think it better to move the useful material and references you have gathered into the existing article, expanding what it says about Botswana there. Then Leteisi will become a redirect page, but its history will be preserved at that page. HouseOfChange (talk) 21:43, 19 February 2025 (UTC)

Thank you for your thoughts. You’re right that Leteisi is the name of the fabric, but in Botswana, the term is also commonly used to refer to the garments made from it. Many people say “Leteisi” when talking about traditional and modern outfits worn at weddings, celebrations, and cultural events.

While the Shweshwe article covers the fabric’s broader history, Leteisi has a unique cultural significance in Botswana that goes beyond just the material. The name is deeply rooted in our culture, and merging it entirely into Shweshwe would overlook an important part of Botswana’s identity. Leteisi is more than just a fabric here; it is a cultural symbol, widely known for the garments made from it.

Merging everything under Shweshwe would not reflect how people in Botswana understand and use the term. It would, in a way, distort our national identity by grouping our traditions under a name that we do not use. Instead, I believe it would be more balanced to expand the Shweshwe article to include more about Botswana while also keeping Leteisi as a separate entry to highlight its specific role in fashion and culture here. I think it will be great to have more about Botswana's clothing traditions, and I suggest you start by creating a Botswana section in Clothing in Africa or a standalone article Clothing in Botswana. But be sure to cite a reliable source for statements in the article. I still haven't seen any RS that calls "leteisi" a style of dress. Instead, it seems to be a fabric aka "German print" or "shweshwe" used in many dress styles in Botswana.. HouseOfChange (talk) 16:51, 20 February 2025 (UTC)
