You now are a Nobel man/woman/otherworldly-creature

Because of your display of great magical potential, and your latent ability of wizardy you never knew you had, The Prophet Wizard of the Crayon Cake {Prophesize)has awarded you this delicious Great Stone of The Goat Cheese of The Arduous Bindage of Metaphorical Flax, for your great achievements in defeating tomfoolery and countering many nasty things. This stone is a gateway to higher, immortal enlightenment and the key to increasing your magical powers as a magician. But be warned, the goat cheese is a tempting treat to consume... should you consume it, then it will cease to give you immortal powers. Many a person has succumbed to the beast of desire, consuming the delicious cheese in a torpid rage. Egads!

Thanks for keeping a cool head. I think you'd be a pretty good mediator. -- The Prophet Wizard of the Crayon Cake ^{Prophesize) 21:21, 19 June 2006 (UTC

Thank you very much! I do try to make peace (I sometimes call myself "the cheesemaker" in reference to Life of Brian), but too often it doesn't work, which I find very stressful. Thanks for the help, the fromage, and the kind words! Karen 21:30, 19 June 2006 (UTC)

URL glitch and how to redirect

When I save the correct URL for Major characters in the works of Madeleine L'Engle in my off-Wiki blog, it cuts off after the L. I tried to set up a redirect at Major characters in the works of Madeleine L but the redirect isn't working. I've never done one before, and I really don't know how to do it. Help? BTW, same issue with Places in the works of Madeleine L'Engle, except that I haven't tried to set up a redirect for that yet. Thanks! Karen | Talk | contribs 22:10, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

Hi Mavarin. I've fixed the redirect. Take a look at the redirect/history if you want to see how it's done. -- zzuuzz ^(talk) 22:56, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:H2g2book.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:H2g2book.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 17:25, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

Fixed. Oddly enough, I just remembered an hour ago that this image might not have a FUR yet. --Karen | Talk | contribs 04:42, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

Disemvoweling

I concur with your recent revision at disemvoweling, however, it was not well received by other parties. I took a different tack and tried to write a more balanced introduction to the censorship section. I've probably strayed mildly in OR in the process, but the original pretense of NPOV was too harsh to ignore. MaxEnt (talk) 04:42, 23 January 2008 (UTC)

Sorry to hear that page gave you combat fatigue. It's not hard to see how that page has come to function as a grief magnet. I wasn't trying to drag you back into this, but merely affirm that you are not alone in your views. I'm content to regard my eradicated edit as a vote in the edit history for a more balanced approach, and leave it at that. MaxEnt (talk) 03:51, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

Spin and Marty

I'd say the DVD cover suffices, as long as that's ok with you. JGHowes ^talk - 05:39, 23 January 2008 (UTC)

On second thought, I can see where the reader's understanding would be enhanced by virtue of the explanation about the introductory segment, which is in b&w after all. I think 2 Fair Use images are allowable, so both could remain, if you agree. JGHowes ^talk - 05:57, 23 January 2008 (UTC)

Hi Karen, if only one is allowed, I agree your b&w version should remain - because it's more faithful to the original b&w series. Cheers, Jim JGHowes ^talk - 16:52, 23 January 2008 (UTC)

Francie (doll by Mattel)

Hi there!

I thought you'd like to know I am the one who made some changes and added information about Francie. (Changes listed as by 74.76.235.90) I've been a Francie collector for many years, run a group just for Francie collectors, and have a lot of information about her.

If you have any questions, or would like anything more, please let me know.

Fair use rationale for Image:Summerstorydvd.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Summerstorydvd.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Project FMF (talk) 22:19, 5 March 2008 (UTC)

AfD nomination of Back to the Future timeline

An editor has nominated Back to the Future timeline, an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Back to the Future timeline (3rd nomination) and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 22:00, 9 March 2008 (UTC)

James Thurber

So all my friends know that my great grandma was James Thurber's first cousin, but over the weekend my friends thought it be funny to google me. i have done this myself before, but no notable sites have came up that are directed towards me. So as they did this they decided to type in "Mark M... M..." and this waste of a blog showed up :

http://outmavarin.blogspot.com/...

And in this blog it mentions my name, Mark M. When they told me i did not believe them at first, but i went home and what was the first site that came up when i searched "Mark M. M."? Yours.

Obsessed much?

Mark M. (talk) 19:06, 29 April 2008 (UTC) Mavarin's Enemy

This person's surname and place of residence have been removed from here and the blog itself for purposes of respecting his privacy. Apologies for any inconvenience, but I stand by my 2006 assertion that the name of a random, fairly distant relative does not belong in a Wikipedia article, due to notability and WP:BLP guidelines.

Image copyright problem with Image:Armofthestarfish.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Armofthestarfish.jpg. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

• That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's escription page for each article the image is used in.
• That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

Question

Hi Mavarin, I noticed that you revert vandalism occasionally. Would you like me to grant your account rollback rights to make vandal-fighting easier for you? Just remember that rollback should only be used to revert vandalism, and that misuse of the tool can lead to its removal. Tell me what you think. Thanks. Acalamari 18:42, 1 July 2008 (UTC)

Rollback granted. :) For practice and additional information, you may wish to review Wikipedia:New admin school/Rollback. Good luck. Acalamari 01:46, 2 July 2008 (UTC)

L'Engle categories

On the contrary, I think having a parent cat of "works by" and a sub-cat of "novels by" is fine. Even if L'Engle only has one or two non-fiction works, "works by" gives them a spot to be found rather than just under "non-fiction works" or such like. F-M High School Oak Tree

Hi Karen- Sorry I never even knew I had messges on here- DONKINGBOX from F-M class of 1982.

In answer to your Oak Tree questions: I just posted an interesting article on my site www.fmclassof1982.com it's on the front page about the Oak Tree.

I went to Wellwood "Middle" School from 1976-1978 and remember the actual spot where the Oak Tree was- and I confirmed this as I had a 6th Grade class( Mr Luttinger) picture taken in February 1976. We had a super warm spell that week 75 degreesthat melted all the snow The Picture was taken to the left of the spot where the old oak tree stood. They had built a kind of flower garden around where it was. According to the article on my site http://www.syracuse.com/east/index.ssf?/base/news-3/1220432316280650.xml&coll=1 it was cut down in August of 1970. Although there were also at that time several Elm Trees of sizable measure and age, for some reason, The Oak got all the Glory and the Hornets nest got the 5 minutes of fame.

I can recall distinctly in 7th grade and Mr (John) Loosmans Science class going out (for our almost Daily Field Trip) and identifying trees and leaves and him discussing the Old Oak Tree that was there..

As for the tree we Planted: It was in memory of a classmate named Bob Platten who died in December of 1981 before we graduated. We purchased and planted the tree in May of 1982 and I recall the ceremony as if it were yesterday. There are pictures of that tree today on my website if you click on Class Reunion Pictures tab in the Left Column, you can see us last year standing in front of the now 25 year old Oak Tree. It has turned out to be a fantastic Tree!

Also just wondering why someone removed the statement I added? I am not sure what kind of reference would be needed, though I am sure I can produce for your you about 95% of the people who were a part of the Oak Tree Planting and dedication ( As I have tracked down 339 of 363 Classmates with my Website)

Furthermore if you look at the picture thats posted on the wiki, that Tree to the right of the sign, is the one that we planted. http://fmclassof1982.com/2007%20Reunion/2007%20Reunion/album/slides/IMG_6297.html This is the picture taken last year of some of us at the re-dedication ceremony. The Guy in the green Shirt in the middle is class President - Kerry Lightcap.

The Tree that you were probobly thinking of was on the Right hand (North Side) of the old building in Front of what used to be the Front door back in 1970. That tree was there when we were there but as I recall it was very scraggly and either died or was dying and may very well have been cut down since.

Just wondering the rationale? —Preceding unsigned comment added by DONKINGBOX (talk • contribs) 20:04, 31 October 2008 (UTC)

Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion, guidelines for use at WP:MINOR). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and all users will still be able to manually mark their edits as being minor in the usual way.

For well-established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

Thank you for your understanding and happy editing :) Editing on behalf of User:Jarry1250, LivingBot (talk) 21:05, 15 March 2011 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for File:Lincntod.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Lincntod.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. George Maharis

I have appreciated what you have accomplished to this article of the actor of Route 66. Nevertheless, this was discussed in Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons/Noticeboard#George Maharis, and many edits were done. Even I hid, not removed, the LGBT-related categories because independent or third-party sources themselves do not indicate his sexual orientation. You may click that Wikilink to the Noticeboard if you want to discuss this currently living person. --George Ho (talk) 20:29, 24 December 2011 (UTC)

UPDATE: Section about his sexuality was removed due to concerns about violating WP:BLP. --George Ho (talk) 12:18, 31 December 2011 (UTC)

File permission problem with File:George Maharis and Martin Milner (promotional photo ca. 1960).jpg

Thanks for uploading File:George Maharis and Martin Milner (promotional photo ca. 1960).jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

• make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
• Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Kelly ^hi! 11:15, 10 October 2014 (UTC)

Episode numbering in Route 66 article

Hi, Karen! Thank you for all your work on Wikipedia! I was just following a stream of consciousness flow this afternoon and entered a Route 66 branch. I was studying the article, which I think is very well done and found to be full of pleasant surprises, when I found myself thinking that things just didn't add up! The number of episodes in total was an even number, and an odd number were done in the third season, but the number apparently done in the fourth season was even. Something had to be wrong somewhere, I was sure... I think I found it. In the fourth season, the season episode numbers jump from 17 to 19. I have done a few minor edits and can do this one, but I am probably naive about some editing customs, and possibly ignorant about some techniques and tools. So, I thought I would seek advice or approval or just some conversation with someone who knew a lot about something which, looking back, I believe was a significant influence in my life. I don't even know if this sort of chat is appropriate here. I'd be glad to chat with you by another method - email, telephone, whatever. I'll try to be sure I actually look around for ways you might respond to this over the next few days. Forgive my ignorance. If you just say "do the edit!", I shall. But if you would like to teach me a thing or two, or just stroll down memory lane from 50 years ago for a bit, I'd be happy for that as well. Thanks very much. Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Hcalvinasgarcia.jpg

Thank you for uploading File:Hcalvinasgarcia.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator seven days after the file was tagged in accordance with section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion.
