Euphonium

[edit]

Hi, I was listening to a delightful Euphonium piece on RNZ this evening, and thought I would look up the history of the instrument. The piece was Sparke's Pantomine , although the performance was New Zealand SO/Bruce Hangen, Anyway, I looked at the article Euphonium. It is in need of some care and attention. I know you have many other interests, but perhaps you could find some time to give this article a boost ? Marshelec (talk) 05:24, 16 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Marshelec I'd love to :) I'm in the middle of a keyed trumpet and bugle stint at the moment, but I'll get to it soon — Jon (talk) 05:30, 16 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hi - feel free to take a look. I'm considering merging most of what's in the §Name section into the §History section. I haven't touched the §Types section yet. Let me know if you have any ideas! — Jon (talk) 23:39, 22 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Marshelec: I've been chipping away at Euphonium over the last couple of months, and I think it's in much better shape now. I'll probably nominate it for WP:GA soon, what do you think? — Jon (talk) 00:24, 26 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

Example of music snippets in Wiksource

[edit]

Hi Jon, based on your question about using Lilypond in enWikisource, this is a book I did a little while back: Fugue. So, I'm sure we can manage a manual on the Serpent. Beeswaxcandle (talk) 01:02, 8 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

Wow, that's excellent! I guess this would need to go in frWikisource... — Jon (talk) 20:38, 8 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Beeswaxcandle: for an extra challenge, I'm doing my first Wikisource in French, here. Luckily, there is very little text, and a bunch of Lilypond which will hopefully work the same in any language. Also, how is it 2024 and we don't have a cursive script font yet after seven years? — Jon (talk) 04:40, 11 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
Well, you're never one to back down from a little challenge like that. In respect of the font, the goal is to reproduce the content rather than the little details of the look. As a result, I'm happy to not have a cursive script font. I really don't need to add that battle to those I already have to deal with. Have fun, Beeswaxcandle (talk) 08:41, 11 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Beeswaxcandle: I know you're busy and it's Christmas season, but would you be able to have a quick squizz at this over on fr.wikisource, I know it's in French but so far it seems similar enough and I've been able to muddle along. The first thing is that I think I've somehow ended up with .djvu in the title of the book, and page name, by mistake... is that a simple move page request? I've missed out 6-7 pages of price catalogue, which looks absolutely horrendous to try and reproduce! I haven't really figured out what the different red yellow and blue page colours mean. Anyway, cheers and Merry Christmas! — Jon (talk) 03:52, 13 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi Jon, the extension of .djvu is correct in the Livre: (Index:) and Page: namespaces. This is based on the filename. It won't show in Mainspace when the pages are transcluded. I would count the price catalogue as advertisements and ignore. The colours: red means "not proofread" or not ready for second eyes; yellow is "proofread" or ready for second eyes to look at; blue is "problematic" or an image is needed or need to think more about the page; there is also green, which is "validated" or second eyes have gone over the page; and gray, which is for blank pages. Ornette picture with low-A alto

[edit]

The caption says it's a Selmer, but is it? I can't make out the logo, and the finish on it looks like it's a much more recent horn than an old Mark VI with a low-A. He could obviously have had one refinished I guess. - Special-T (talk) 13:38, 21 February 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Special-T on Commons there's several photos e.g. File:Ornette Coleman.jpg of him playing the same horn, with the Selmer logo, and the three-way key guard on the bell (normally 2) because of the extra tone hole for the A. Jon (talk) 19:14, 21 February 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hiatus

[edit]

Dear wiki friends, if anyone is wondering why I've been a bit quiet it's because 9 days ago I was rushed to the local ED with a subarachnoid hæmorrhage (SAH). But unlike all the poor folks who have had to deal with the complications and poor outcomes from aneurysms described in that article, mine was a perimesencephalic SAH, which originates in a vein which quickly self-heal in most cases and can now be reliably identified if the CT is done within 6 hours. This was the most terrifying thing in my life, I am unbelievably lucky and so thankful. I'm getting better every day, and can now function normally for short bursts. But that article terrified everyone I knew who read it, and there is no mention of perimesencephalic hæmorrhage anywhere. They make up about 10% of cases, have different risk factors, present otherwise identically, are conclusively identified by CT and MRI angiogram, but they have generally much better prognosis, and treatment is as for other SAH assuming successful treatment of the aneurysm.[1] When I'm a bit better, I'd like to fix it. Anyway, cheers. Let's all make this encyclopædia awesome. — Jon (talk) 01:02, 3 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

@DisillusionedBitterAndKnackered thank you both. It's been fun to get these brass instrument articles into a good state. I started out on the fringes, and I'm working my way in to the main articles. My first GA elevated nomination! Very much appreciate your review and feedback, and for taking over for the other reviewer who was unable to complete the review. I was wondering if WP:Good articles/Social sciences and society would be a more appropriate category than WP:Good articles/Natural sciences though, considering the subject is an epidemiologist and a politician, both of which seem to fall into the social sciences and society tag. Good article nominations RfC

[edit]

Hi Jonathanischoice,

There is an ongoing Request for Comment (RfC) at Wikipedia:Good article nominations/August 2026 RfC, which you may be interested in because in the past year, you have nominated or reviewed more than one good article nomination. This message has also been sent to all subscribers to the Good Article Gazette. The RfC contains many proposals (33 at the time of writing), which are split into the following categories: nominators, reviewers, reviews, volunteer roles, reviewing initiatives, and others. However, you are more than welcome to add any proposals of your own that you wish to put to the community.

By the end of September, all the proposals will have been closed by an uninvolved editor, either as a consensus for one of the options or with no consensus. At this point, editors will be invited again to develop these proposals into coherent policy and implement them.

Thank you for your contributions to the good articles project, and I look forward to your input! (in solidarity), JacobTheRox(talk|contributions) 16:02, 11 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

@JacobTheRox I'm in hospital at the moment on my phone, so I can't add a comment to the general discussion at the end for some reason, but just to say I appreciate your efforts in compiling the RfC. I am fine with the unusually large list of 35+ Qs in one place, it's less fragmented and I can read through them all, and I support and understand your reasons for doing so. When I have a laptop I will add a comment to that effect. I have recently copped a bit of push back on my GA assist-review of Abdul El-Sayed, where it seems I overlooked and rushed some things in the name of expediency and while distracted at Wikimania Paris, so this review is good timing for me to take stock. Jonathanischoice (talk) 06:04, 12 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
I hope you are okay and I wish you all the best with your health ❤. While there is no time pressure, because the RfC will be running for at least a month while people discuss different proposals, if you prefer, you could also compile a list of !votes or comments on a different page (e.g. a user sandbox) which will be easier to navigate and edit and I can transfer them over for you :) (in solidarity), JacobTheRox(talk|contributions) 08:07, 12 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
I hope your health improves swiftly and fully! Schwede66 18:30, 12 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

User:Generalissima has placed a Citation Needed tag on a statement in this article, which does in fact need a citation. I'm embarrassed at having missed it. The statement is under Construction: "The modern flugelhorn is usually pitched in 4½-foot (4½′) B♭, like most trumpets and cornets, with three piston valves. It is also sometimes built in 4′ C. Instruments made with rotary valves are used in central and eastern Europe, and feature a "shepherd crook" shape in the first tubing bend, retained from the earliest Prussian cornets and valved bugles." Please go ahead and take care of that, because I don't really want to reopen a GA that I just closed. Bgsu98 (Talk) 21:58, 19 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

I believe you meet all the criteria now and you've certainly shown a need for the right, so I've added it to your account — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 11:58, 3 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Your account has been granted the "templateeditor" user permission, allowing you to edit templates and modules that have been protected with template protection. It also allows you to bypass the title blacklist, giving you the ability to create and edit editnotices. Before you use this user right, please read Wikipedia:Template editor and make sure you understand its contents. In particular, you should read the section on wise template editing and the criteria for revocation.

You can use this user right to perform maintenance, answer edit requests, and make any other simple and generally uncontroversial edits to templates, modules, and editnotices. You can also use it to enact more complex or controversial edits, after those edits are first made to a test sandbox, and their technical reliability as well as their consensus among other informed editors has been established. If you are willing to process edit requests on templates and modules, keep in mind that you are taking responsibility to ensure the edits have consensus and are technically sound.

This user right gives you access to some of Wikipedia's most important templates and modules; it is critical that you edit them wisely and that you only make edits that are backed up by consensus. It is also very important that no one else be allowed to access your account, so you should consider taking a few moments to secure your password.

If you do not want this user right, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time.

If you were granted the permission on a temporary basis, you will need to reapply for the permission a few days before it expires. In your request, include a permalink to the discussion where it was granted and a {{Reply to}} for the administrator who granted you the permission. You can find the permalink in your rights log.

Citations from a database

[edit]

I saw you were developing {{Cite Q}}.

There are a lot of moving pieces here but lately, like in the past few months, a lot of technology and partners have changed to make it worthwhile to explore options to copy Wikipedia citations to a Wikimedia database, and maybe pull citations from that database to help sort and standardize them.

Some ideas are at meta:WikiCite/ReCite and there is older documentation of other perspectives elsewhere.

Can you briefly tell me more about your interest in Cite Q?

I see you posting at Template talk:Cite Q but what is your overall motivation? It seems like people come to citation templates for many reasons. Bluerasberry (talk) 23:46, 16 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

I think it's much better to maintain a citation in once place, in this case Wikidata, and cite it on Wikimedia projects by (ideally) just using {{Cite Q}} with a QID. The simplest benefit is the metadata (author, title, publisher, etc.) is always updated or corrected once, and propagated everywhere. It doesn't require Wikipedia editors to write tediously long {{Cite journal}} or {{Cite book}} incantations and specify (correctly) every bit of metadata, and then have to copy and paste them everywhere to reuse them. Then different editors will cite the same source, in different articles, but each one slightly different or incorrect in their own different way. But there are also many second-order benefits from using Cite Q, like being able to automatically flag citations that have been retracted, have errata, or expression of concern notices, without the article editor having to do any extra checking. My interest is in making it easy to provide citations for Wikipedia article editors (although I don't use the Visual Editor, so I have no idea how well Cite Q works with it). I have reused several book sources using Cite Q in my GAs, e.g. flugelhorn, euphonium, cimbasso, tuba, etc. It still needs work - I have been knocking off many long-standing annoyances, but the one major thing it is missing is the way authors are listed, and it needs to extract given and family names for the vast majority of cases where that is expected, and also to get it to work with Harvard-style {{sfn}} references. I'm open to ideas though! — Jonathanischoice (talk) 00:13, 17 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Produnto

[edit]

ICYMI in Tech News; this looks interesting, for Cite Q:

Produnto has been deployed to mediawiki.org and some Indic language wikis. We want to hear your feedback on this experimental product. Produnto allows users to use Lua modules hosted in Wikimedia's GitLab. It simplifies the sharing of Lua code between wikis. Instead of copying each individual Lua module from one wiki to another, users will be able to easily share packages across all wikis.

Authors with missing given and family names

[edit]

How easy would it be to break down use of Category:Cite Q - authors with missing given and family names so that errors go into one (or both!) of:

  • Category:Cite Q - author items with missing given and family names
  • Category:Cite Q - author name strings with missing given and family names

please? I find the former much quicker (using d:User:1Veertje/NamePrefiller.js), and more important, to fix; others may wish to concentrate on the latter. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits; 13:49, 18 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Pigsonthewing I have some IRL right now but I'm happy to do that, along with the ignore non-human first/last name business, which is obvious in retrospect... — Jonathanischoice (talk) 19:55, 18 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Pigsonthewing, a thought: do you want separate categories for editors and translators, or lump them in with authors so that we only have author name strings separate (the others all being item properties)? — Jonathanischoice (talk) 20:34, 18 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Happy for them to be lumped.
