Clarify Indonesian coelacanth
[edit]I have corrected the markup for the {{Clarify|date=September 2025|reason=}} template. I am not sure what you think needs clarifying, so for others like me it may be worth giving a reason. If it's the presence of the phrase "making them carnivorous", it would have been better to remove the phrase without the clarify template.

- Thanks for fixing this---I'm relatively new when it comes to using templates correctly. I was referring to the contradictory information suggesting that the fish eats epibenthopelagic organisms, whilst claiming that it eats cephalopods in the next sentence. The article had a number of similar phrasings throughout the article, which I had mostly fixed in that edit. This particular phrasing I wasn't sure what the original author was trying to say, as well I myself not being able to quickly find appropriate information on the organism. Hence, I added a clarification tag in order to indicate the presence of such an issue in this particular section. If my usage of this template is incorrect, please change it and let me know what should be used instead. I'm thankful for you letting me know this! - This is a subject of which I have limited knowledge, but, hypothetically, the coelacanth could both feed primarly on benthopelagic fish, but have a preference for deep sea fish. I think the main problem is that of the two cited sources one, Kadarusman et al., does not discuss prey, either primary or preferrred, while the other, Whittaker, although it does have a table, table 2, of prey items, it does not discuss prey preferences. So this means
Their food preference is mainly deep sea fish and cephalopods, making them carnivorous.{{Clarify|date=September 2025|reason=}}has a{{Failed verification|date=September 2025}}and<ref name=":1" />is an unnecessary reference. So perhaps the sentence about diet preference, together with the unnecessary reference could be removed. What do you think? - Another problem is
While hunting, coelacanths have been observed to swim with their heads directed upwards in what is thought to be headstand posturing which is the most energy efficient.<ref name=":5" />. The cited source refers to the "headstand" behaviour, but does not describe it. Just based on the name, I would have thought their heads would be directed downwards, not upwards.The coelacanth has been observed to perform headstand maneuvers lasting for minutes as it drifts across the substrate with the head facing downwards placing the narrowly focused electrosensitive rostral organ in close proximity to the seabed which may maximize changes of benthic prey capture
