We hope to see you at the next WikiCanberra meetup on 18 July!

Auto check for August

[edit]

None posted yet. Perhaps you know and are busy/out of town. Also was delayed in February as I recall. Donner60 (talk) 22:13, 25 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

I can confirm that the job ran, but it did not produce the report. I am currently in Canada and cannot troubleshoot it. I will investigate when I get back next month. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 10:05, 26 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. 10:10, 26 September 2026 (UTC) Donner60 (talk) 10:10, 26 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

James F. Woodward (1941 – August 9, 2025) was an American physicist who was professor emeritus of history and an adjunct professor of physics at California State University, Fullerton. He is best known for a physics hypothesis that he proposed in 1990, later expanded, that predicts several physical effects that he refers to as 'Mach effects'. Woodward claimed the effect could be used as a reactionless drive for space travel.

Test inflation of PAGEOS, a balloon satellite

The Passive Geodetic Earth Orbiting Satellite (PAGEOS) was the first dedicated geodetic surveying satellite. PAGEOS was the culmination of a series of balloon satellites that started in 1960 with Project Echo. These satellites were commissioned following the launch of Sputnik 1, as the United States was eager to catch up to the Soviet Union during the Space Race. Construction of PAGEOS was undertaken by the Gilmore Schjeldahl#Schjeldahl Company, founded by the same man who invented the sickness bag. This image shows a test inflation of the 30 m (100 ft), 57 kg (125 lb) satellite performed on 5 August, 1965.

Freddie de Guingand

[edit]

I'm sorry, but I do not understand your opposition to calling him Sir Freddie de Guingand in the infobox. Nor do I understand why you insist on reverting all my edits instead of a single word (which I see you have now done twice without explanation as to why you have chosen to delete his rank and postnominal letters, which are standard in an infobox for British military officers). Of course the London Gazette calls him Sir Francis. It is an official document. It always uses formal names. However, as I'm sure you well know, Wikipedia does not. It uses WP:COMMONNAME. The article is titled "Freddie de Guingand" (the name by which he is definitely most commonly known) and the infobox should reflect that, as is common practice. -- Necrothesp (talk) 09:21, 13 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

The article title is Freddie de Guingard per WP:COMMONNAME but he was never Sir Freddie; we can't mix the honorifics with the nickname. The template is contradictory; |honorific_prefix= "is for honorifics of serious significance that are attached to the name in formal address, such as knighthoods" so demands the formal name. I thought this was the common practice (and the one your defended back in 2023). Although it was his nickname, de Guingand does not use it in his books, which use his formal name. I never removed his rank or postnominal letters from the infobox; I don't think they were ever there. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 19:07, 13 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

The logo for the Wikimedia Café

Hello! There will be two Wikimedia Café discussion opportunities in October. In a change from the usual Café practice, this month's sessions will have different topics. Anyone who meets the Café attendance criteria is welcome to attend either or both sessions.

Session A will happen on Saturday, 24 October 2026 at 15:00 UTC (timestamp converter), at a time friendly to the Americas, Africa, and Europe. This session will feature Wikimedia Foundation lawyer Phil Bradley-Schmieg. We will discuss legal issues on Wikimedia Commons, including complexities of international law. (I am hoping that in a future month, a similar Café session will be offered at a time friendly to Asia and the Pacific.)

Session B will happen on Sunday, 25 October 2026 at 03:00 UTC (timestamp converter), at a time friendly to Asia and the Pacific, we will discuss proposed changes to how Wikimedia Foundation Board candidates are selected. The latest proposals are much different from the earlier July 2026 proposals. The due date for feedback on current proposals is 27 October, and Wikimedians are welcome to participate on the proposal talk page regardless of Café attendance.

Please see the Café page for more information, including how to register!

To subscribe or unsubscribe for Café notices on your talk page please go here.

My revisions

[edit]

Hi you seem to be changing additions I have mad havong read Jim Baggotts book. My additions are in good faith although they may be mistaken. Please inform me where and why I'm am wrong Thanks george MLP Updater (talk) 22:08, 20 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

The atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima on 6 August 1945. So Hahn was informed on the night of 7 August, after the BBC broadcast, not two months before. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 22:22, 20 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
I think the Bomb was dropped just after midnight on the 6th UK Summer time so they were told later on the sixth. MLP Updater (talk) 10:18, 21 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Since you have the book and I don't: does it have footnotes? If so, where is it taking this from? The bit about Hahn being told before supper comes from Groves but he goes on to claim that Hahn felt suicidal, which has been debunked. If you want to work on the Operation Epsilon article (and I encourage you to do so), you'll need to get hold of a copy of Hitler's Uranium Club: The Secret Recordings at Farm Hall. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 03:24, 21 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yes there are footnotes and references but not for that statement. The book was published 15 years ago an mentions Hahn's state of mind.
I have less life expectancy than the books and projects I am already involved with but thank you for the heads up. MLP Updater (talk) 10:22, 21 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

ACR statistics

[edit]

Hi, I hope that things are going well. I'm writing an op-ed for the next edition of the Bugle with some suggestions for revitalising the ACR process. I'd like to illustrate how things have slowed down with statistics, but it looks like there isn't a log of nominations over time I can use to develop this. I can pull something together using previous editions of the Bugle (e.g. comparing 2025 to 2019), but are you aware of any statistics here that already exist? Regards, Nick-D (talk) 08:46, 24 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

No, I don't think we keep them. I was thinking you might look at the A-class showcase but note that articles are removed when promoted to FA. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 09:06, 24 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. I might add that kind of tracking to my list of suggestions! Nick-D (talk) 10:28, 24 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
