Hi there, I am an employee of the Russell Group and have a conflict of interest. I'd like to suggest a couple of edits to the page. Question from Mo-Legend (07:35, 7 August 2026)

[edit]

how can i add my business to wikepedia --Mo-Legend (talk) 07:35, 7 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello! I would strongly suggest you don't. Wikipedia is not a business directory, it's an encyclopedia. Your company is likely not notable, so if you tried then the article would most likely be deleted. Having a Wikipedia article should not be a marketing goal for you; Wikipedia doesn't exist to promote companies, and you don't have any editorial control over what the article says, meaning it's likely that it won't give information on your company in the same light as you would like. {{GearsDatapacks|talk|contribs|in solidarity}} 08:57, 8 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello!!

[edit]

I don't really edit on here very much anymore, so I can't tell exactly when you were added as my mentor (when do I get to stop having one of those, anyways?!) but it's cool to see they have a system in place in case the other one falls through!

Meteororor (talk) 19:24, 7 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello! I believe the mentorship module automatically disappears when you become extended confirmed (I may be wrong about that though), or you can turn it off somewhere in your preferences. I think I will still technically "be" your mentor, as in, the data exists somewhere in Wikipedia's servers, but for all intents and purposes, you won't have a mentor if you disable it. {{GearsDatapacks|talk|contribs|in solidarity}} 09:01, 8 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

[edit]

Hi how is it goin?so I would like to know how to make seperations in rows like dividing a row in two parts --Erfanyx (talk) 15:55, 9 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, I'm not exactly sure what you mean by that. Can you explain what you are trying to do? {{GearsDatapacks|talk|contribs|in solidarity}} 17:17, 9 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
so there is this list of a singer's soundtracks that I'm working on,there are some mistakes that I've been trying to fix.there is a table with the name of the movies, names of the songs they've sung, lyricists etc.for some movies they have sung more than 1 song so I want to write the names of the songs but the row wouldn't divide into 2 or 3 more sections for me to write the info Erfanyx (talk) 17:36, 9 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
It's this article, right? Looking at that, I can see a lot of films which have multiple songs for them, if that's what you mean. {{GearsDatapacks|talk|contribs|in solidarity}} 17:45, 9 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
yes that's the article.so one of the movies was released in 1988 but it was put on the list of 1989 so I tried to fix it.after correcting it I realised the singer was given credit to for 3 songs of the film but I couldn't make 3 seperated attached rows for the same movie to write the names of 3 songs I had space for only 1 name however there some movies with the song name part divided into 3 or 2 other parts with the names and the number of songs written how do I do that?how do I make more rows in one row? Erfanyx (talk) 20:17, 9 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Ah, got it. So if you're using the visual editor, what you can do is first make three separate rows and fill in all the information for each one. Then, you select the three cells which contain the movie title (by dragging from one to the other), and a button should appear in the bottom middle of the screen that says "Merge cells", which should do what you want. {{GearsDatapacks|talk|contribs|in solidarity}} 13:18, 10 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Good article nominations RfC

[edit]

Hi GearsDatapacks,

There is an ongoing Request for Comment (RfC) at Wikipedia:Good article nominations/August 2026 RfC, which you may be interested in because in the past year, you have nominated or reviewed more than one good article nomination. This message has also been sent to all subscribers to the Good Article Gazette. The RfC contains many proposals (33 at the time of writing), which are split into the following categories: nominators, reviewers, reviews, volunteer roles, reviewing initiatives, and others. However, you are more than welcome to add any proposals of your own that you wish to put to the community.

By the end of September, all the proposals will have been closed by an uninvolved editor, either as a consensus for one of the options or with no consensus. At this point, editors will be invited again to develop these proposals into coherent policy and implement them.

Thank you for your contributions to the good articles project, and I look forward to your input! (in solidarity), JacobTheRox(talk|contributions) 16:02, 11 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Question from SephyPHC (09:20, 17 August 2026)

[edit]

Hi GearsDatapacks, I have been editing for about 5 months now and I’d like to strengthen my account more and make higher quality contributions. Looking at where I am now... what advice would you give me on the best types of edits to focus on and any habits I should improve or avoid? Thank you!. --SephyPHC (talk) 09:20, 17 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello! Looking at your edits, I see quite a few instances of you removing or changing things without providing a reason in the edit summary or citing a source, which makes it difficult to tell whether your edit is correct or not. Many editors will see this and revert it since you haven't provided adequate justification for your change. I would suggest you get into the habit of making it clear why you made a change so that your changes are obviously correct to editors who come across them.
Other than that, I don't have particular guidance. Everyone has their own preferences for what kind of editing tasks they like doing, and the only real way to find that is to try out editing and figure it out from there. {{GearsDatapacks|talk|contribs|in solidarity}} 20:52, 17 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

You're invited to join the Organized Labour community editing event, a cross-wiki event taking place throughout September 2026!

The campaign brings together Wikimedians interested in improving coverage of organised labour, workers, trade unions, and labour history. We have confirmed collaborations with Wikipedia language editions in English, Dutch, Persian, Serbo-Croatian and French. If you want to add other language editions or other wiki projects you are strongly encouraged to do so! This event spans geography and languages!

This is a one-time invitation. You're receiving it because you previously signed a petition related to Wiki Workers United (WWU). We hope you'll join us!

Question from Pikld (17:08, 20 August 2026)

[edit]

Hello, GearsDatapacks!

I've begun my journey of making contributions to Wikipedia. I'm reaching out to ask if you know how one requests edit reviews? While my easy/medium suggested edits are fairly small in scope, I'd still like to get another set of eyes on them to ensure I'm on the right track.

Thanks! Pikld (talk) 17:08, 20 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hiya! I just looked through some of your edits and they all seem pretty good to me. In general, if you make a bad edit then it will probably be reverted, either by people who watch the page, or by people patrolling recent changes. There's not really one specific place to ask for edit reviews, but if you do a particularly big change, you can send a message on the articles talk page, so that people can give you feedback on it there if they want. {{GearsDatapacks|talk|contribs|in solidarity}} 11:09, 21 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
This is great info, thank you! Remembering there are people who will watch a page is reassuring. And the talk page on any given article is a good idea if I'm really unsure about a change.

You usually don't need to know about a subject to revise the tone, tone is more about the style of the writing than the content. Hello... I am totally new to Wikipedia. And, I might be a bit "out of order". I am a former legislator in South Dakota / Mayor of a small town, etc. Similar to other legislators, I thought it would be good history to create an article that identifies me as such. But, I'm not sure how to do this. I am mostly interested in doing this for posterity and archives. Thank you. --NorthstarAvenger (talk) 18:17, 25 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello! It is usually recommended against creating an article about yourself. You are likely not notable, and if you are, someone else will likely create an article about you sooner or later.
As for archives, I'm sure your town or state keeps a record of past legislators, mayors, etc, so that part's already covered. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a historical record. {{GearsDatapacks|talk|contribs|in solidarity}} 21:59, 25 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello! Apologies for taking a little while to answer. If you want to try to make a Wikipedia page, you can use the article wizard, then press the "Submit" button to submit it for review (you must go through this process for conflict-of-interest articles). However, you must write in a neutral tone and source all facts from reliable, independent sources, and not from your personal connection with the subject.
Writing neutral, well-sourced conflict-of-interest articles is hard to do right, so if you try it, be prepared to have your work rejected if you haven't been totally neutral. {{GearsDatapacks|talk|contribs|in solidarity}} 07:54, 9 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Question from Marty17cz (19:02, 12 September 2026)

[edit]

Hello I’m new to wiki editing. I started today. If there’s a poet whose work I really like, and I’d love to add something about a small student film adapting his works, where should I put it? There’s no random facts section or anything like that. Should I create a whole new heading for films that adapt his works, even though probably not much would be added there? I can’t really add it to the section about his works because the film isn’t actually his work. Or is there simply no place for something like this? --Marty17cz (talk) 19:02, 12 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Are there reliable, independent sources about the adaptation (in this case, probably a news article)? If not, it doesn't belong on Wikipedia at all. If there are one or two sources then I would create a section for adaptations, and if there are three or four or more (provided they cover it in enough detail), it could be made into its own article.
Without knowing more details it's difficult to give exact advice; if you're not sure then you could ask on the talk page of the relevant article. {{GearsDatapacks|talk|contribs|in solidarity}} 20:27, 12 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

In short, it's not possible. verifiable information is that which is published by reliable sources. If you work for a reputable newspaper you could try to publish an article about whatever it is you want, but then you shouldn't add that to Wikipedia yourself, as it constitutes a conflict of interest.
Looking at your edits, it seems half of them were a joke, which definitely doesn't help your case. {{GearsDatapacks|talk|contribs|in solidarity}} 10:55, 14 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Question from MWP9393 (02:55, 16 September 2026)

[edit]

Hi — I'm a new editor with a disclosed conflict of interest: I'm employed by Nootropics Depot (disclosure at User:MWP9393). I've been staying off the Nootropics Depot article itself and using noticeboards.

I'd like your advice on process rather than outcome. Looking at the article's sourcing, I think it may not meet WP:NCORP — the sources are two DOJ press releases, a passing mention in a WHO report and a journal vendor list, and an interview with the company's CEO — and an admin at BLPN recently noted the lack of independent reliable sources. I'm not sure whether it's appropriate for someone with my COI to nominate at AfD myself, or whether the better practice is to ask an uninvolved editor to look at it and decide. What would you recommend?

Thanks for any guidance. MWP9393 (talk) 02:56, 16 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

If you have a question, please ask it in your own words. I don't feel like sifting through three paragraphs of AI-generated text. {{GearsDatapacks|talk|contribs|in solidarity}} 06:50, 16 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Fair enough. I work for Nootropics Depot, which the article is about. I think the sourcing is too thin for a company article, but I'm not sure if it's ok for me to nominate it for deletion myself given my COI. Is it, or should I ask someone else to look? MWP9393 (talk) 20:43, 16 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
I think nominating for deletion is okay, as long as you disclose COI there. Deletion is decided by consensus, so you can't get the article deleted on your own as a COI editor. {{GearsDatapacks|talk|contribs|in solidarity}} 21:22, 16 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Question from Splendidmind (23:47, 17 September 2026)

[edit]

My name is Wendi Charles. I'm the mother of Hugh Charles, who is on Wikipedia. I want to be added to Wikipedia. I am the Purpose for Peace Movement CEO. My website is wendicharlesspeaks.com. I also want to add my father, Robert Ellis Hodges, who is in Ebony magazine, January 1952. Also add that Hugh Charles, I, and my father are direct descendants of Willis Augustus Hodges, who is already on Wikipedia as an American journalist and a free slave. How do I do that? --Splendidmind (talk) 23:47, 17 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello! For a number of reasons, it is strongly advised to not try to write a Wikipedia article about yourself.
In general it's usually a bit of a red flag for someone to want to have a page about them. Wikipedia isn't a place for self promotion, it's an encyclopedia which collates information from published secondary sources. If an article were created about you, you would have no editorial control.
You are likely not notable; notability is evaluated on a case-by-case basis and is not inherited, so so being the mother, sister, daughter, etc. of someone who is notable does not make a difference. If you are notable, someone will make an article about your sooner or later.
The same goes for your husband. {{GearsDatapacks|talk|contribs|in solidarity}} 08:41, 18 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

How can I write an article about a Southwest Iowa Amateur Radio Club --GWahle (talk) 21:57, 18 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello! You can start by creating a draft using the article wizard, write it until you think it's ready, and then press the "submit" button.
Make sure you follow the instructions in the wizard, like ensuring the subject is notable before writing about it, because otherwise you'll be wasting your time. {{GearsDatapacks|talk|contribs|in solidarity}} 07:16, 19 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

[edit]

Hi! I just turned on the new editor page; I didn't know this existed! I've been working on a few things; I'll definitely have more questions for you soon. Do you have any tools that you'd recommend for beginner editors? I've been having trouble finding the right templates in the search feature while editing. Is there an easier way to preview templates before adding them? --Citylookspretty (talk) 21:58, 19 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hiya, and welcome! Sorry for taking a while to get back to you.
I don't have any particular tool recommendations unless there's a specific area you're working on. In general I think the best thing to do as a new editor is make lots of edits and learn from your mistakes. If you're interested though, feel free to look at the list of user scripts I used, and take whichever ones take your fancy.
As for previewing templates, I'm not really sure. For template editing I always use the source editor now, but I assume you're using the visual editor. Probably the best thing you can do is open the template in a new tab (by right-clicking on the name as it comes up when you're searching), and look at the example and documentation there.
If you have any more questions, let me know! I'll try to respond more swiftly next time. {{GearsDatapacks|talk|contribs|in solidarity}} 08:48, 21 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Cool, I'll check out those scripts! As for editing, I switch between source and visual depending on what I'm doing. I like visual for actually writing but I feel like for templates and tables it can be kinda funky so I'll usually use source, it'll probably get better with practice tho. I've been learning a lot from my mistakes so far! It's all been very informative and rewarding! Citylookspretty (talk) 19:41, 21 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

[edit]

Hi! Hope you're doing well:D

I wanted to start potentially authoring some pages, but wanted to run a couple topics by you because I'm still very new to the rules here.

I'm wondering about the following: - Mr. S Leather (they are a famous leather store out of San Francisco and have been an essential asset to the queer community for decades... but they are a business. assuming things like this are off the table?) - Keith Fitch (he is a composition faculty at my school, but I do believe he is worthy of a page as he is one of the foremost composers of my field. Could I still author a page on him even if this would classify as a conflict of interest?)

Thanks a bunch, Hbenf --Hbenf (talk) 21:32, 27 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hiya! No matter what you are writing about, the criteria for whether something deserves an article is the same: it's called notability. In essence, a subject needs multiple reliable, independent sources (newpapers, magazines, books, etc.), that cover the subject in-depth (enough to write an article that's useful to readers).
If you can find enough sources on either of those two, you can write an article, though if you have a conflict of interest then you must go through articles for creation and let someone else review your writing before being published. I would recommend doing this anyway for your first few articles. {{GearsDatapacks|talk|contribs|in solidarity}} 21:43, 27 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello. How can I find reliable citations? --Earl John Christoff 11:59, 30 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

That's a difficult question and somewhat depends on what subject you are writing about, but in general news organisations, published books, and academic research papers are a good place to start.
After that I usually do a general google search and for any new sources I come across, evaluate whether they seem reliable or not, based on the criteria at Wikipedia:Reliable sources. {{GearsDatapacks|talk|contribs|in solidarity}} 19:43, 30 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

[edit]

Im new here! am i just allowed to make articles about really anything? (obviously not ANYTHING, but a lot of things!) --Theoutlet125 (talk) 21:52, 30 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Pretty much! The only limitation is that you must source all article content to reliable citations, most commonly books, newspapers, magazines, and academic papers.
This requirement has lead to another, called notability, which basically boils down to "are there enough sources to write a useful article about this". If the answer is yes, then you can write an article. {{GearsDatapacks|talk|contribs|in solidarity}} 14:05, 1 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Question from Malveroz (14:27, 2 October 2026)

[edit]

I'm a new editor. I added a paragraph under the subhead, "Theatre," to the Dundas, Ontario article at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dundas,_Ontario. The paragraph fills a hole in the Culture section of the article, and I took pains to document it thoroughly. But the paragraph has been removed with no explanation. Can you please let me know what's wrong with the paragraph? --Malveroz (talk) 14:27, 2 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hiya! Sorry for taking a while to get back to you. If you look in the edit history, you can see that the edit which reverted your addition had an edit summary "please find some secondary sources". You need to cite reliable, independent sources for facts in Wikipedia pages, except for a few small exceptions. So you'll need to find a newspaper, book, magazine article, etc. which talks about that, and cite that in the page along with whatever material is extracted from that source. {{GearsDatapacks|talk|contribs|in solidarity}} 08:18, 5 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for getting back to me. My reverted paragraph contains two references to newspaper articles, as well as other references to the website of the organization, Dundas Little Theatre, it's about. Are references to an institutional website not considered valid ("reliable, independent") sources any longer? I ask because the previous two paragraphs, about Fine Art and Music in the town of Dundas, contain solitary references to the websites of the institutions referred to, and nothing from other sources. If Wikipedia's criteria have changed, should I simply remove the references to the Theatre's website to enable my paragraph to become valid? Malveroz (talk) 14:46, 5 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
An institution's own website is not an independent source, since it is curated by the institution itself. I would recommend only taking information from independent sources for your addition. {{GearsDatapacks|talk|contribs|in solidarity}} 19:59, 5 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
