WikiCup 2026 May newsletter

[edit]

The second round of the 2026 WikiCup ended on 28 April. As a reminder for contestants who just joined or are unaware of recent changes to our round-points system, good article nomination reviews now receive 10 points, an increase from 5 points in the previous year, as per a consensus at WT:CUP. Peer reviews, which continue to be worth 5 points, are now listed in the same section as featured article candidate reviews, rather than with good article reviews. Everyone who competed in round 2 will advance to round 3 unless they have withdrawn or been banned. No other changes to the round-point system have been made for this year.

Round 2 was competitive. Three contestants scored more than 1,000 round points; nine scored over 500; and fourteen scored over 300. The top seven contestants had at least one featured article (two of them with two apiece). The following competitors scored more than 800 round points:

The full scores for round 2 can be seen here. During this round, contestants have claimed 12 featured articles, 13 featured lists, 2 featured-topic articles, 106 good articles, 22 good-topic articles and more than 40 Did You Know articles. In addition, competitors have worked on 3 In the News articles, and they have conducted over 200 reviews. The tournament points table has been updated.

Remember that any content promoted after 28 April but before the start of Round 3 can be claimed in Round 3. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Proposal to improve articles from the SpongeBob SquarePants series

[edit]

Hello @Crystal Drawers:. I'm writing to ask if you'd be interested in upgrading the SpongeBob SquarePants episode articles to make them GAs, like "Christmas Who?", "Shanghaied", "Krusty Krab Training Video", and "Mid-Life Crustacean". Given the excellent work you've done with the Malcolm in the Middle and Arrested Development episodes, I think it would be a great idea. What do you think? ~2026-28586-89 (talk) 22:55, 11 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello, thank you for the proposal! However, I’m currently taking a break from working on new articles, and, after I’m done with some projects I have nominated, I’m probably gonna take a wikibreak, so I’m gonna have to decline (especially given I don’t know a lot about SpongeBob and it’s production, and I haven’t thought about the series in a good while) Crystal Drawers 🎖️ (wanna talk?) 23:27, 11 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Editor of the Week

Editor of the Week
Your ongoing efforts to improve the encyclopedia have not gone unnoticed: You have been selected as Editor of the Week in recognition of your great contributions! (courtesy of the Wikipedia Editor Retention Project)

User:Pokelego999 submitted the following nomination for Editor of the Week:

I nominate Crystal Drawers to be Editor of the Week. Within the past year, they have gotten twenty-eight articles to GA status, primarily in the form of American television episodes, a much neglected space where this work is highly valuable. They have 7544 edits w/ 62% in Mainspace and 18 self-described "semi-quality" articles created in first year of editing. Additionally, one of their articles, The One Where Michael Leaves has achieved FA. This is valuable work with a remarkably high content quality overall, and they deserve some recognition for it. This nomination was seconded by TechnoSquirrel69 and Vanderwaalforces

You can copy the following text to your user page to display a user box proclaiming your selection as Editor of the Week:

My wanting to edit Wikipedia has slowly been dying down a bit but this genuinely made my whole day, and kind of motivated me to keep on editing in a way? Thank you all again, and a big thank you to Pokelego999 for nominating me in the first place :) Crystal Drawers 🎖️ (wanna talk?) 14:19, 30 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

TFA

Thank you today for The One Where Michael Leaves, introduced: '"I'm afraid I just blue myself" Ah, season two of Arrested Development, possibly the finest television season of all time. I've been editing Wikipedia for a few months now, and Arrested Development articles have been a significant part of my editing since the very beginning. No episodes of Arrested Development are at FA status yet, and I find that lack of the Bluths to be quite disturbing, so here I am to change that! The article details the second season premiere of the series, going in-depth into it's development with several behind the scenes details, offering poignant analysis of multiple different faucets of the episode, and is held together by a solid reception section.' - Enjoy your first TFA day! -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:52, 27 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Good article nominations RfC

[edit]

Hi Crystal Drawers,

There is an ongoing Request for Comment (RfC) at Wikipedia:Good article nominations/August 2026 RfC, which you may be interested in because in the past year, you have nominated or reviewed more than one good article nomination. This message has also been sent to all subscribers to the Good Article Gazette. The RfC contains many proposals (33 at the time of writing), which are split into the following categories: nominators, reviewers, reviews, volunteer roles, reviewing initiatives, and others. However, you are more than welcome to add any proposals of your own that you wish to put to the community.

By the end of September, all the proposals will have been closed by an uninvolved editor, either as a consensus for one of the options or with no consensus. At this point, editors will be invited again to develop these proposals into coherent policy and implement them.

Thank you for your contributions to the good articles project, and I look forward to your input! (in solidarity), JacobTheRox(talk|contributions) 16:02, 11 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Theo Faiss

Hi Crystal Drawers, hope you're doing well—and thank you again for reviewing In Memory of Theo Faiss when it was recently at FAC. The article on its namesake is now itself a candidate, although the nomination has stalled a little bit while resolving ancillary issues. Any chacne you might be interested in, and have time to, take a look? Any help getting it back on track would be much appreciated, but of course no worries if not! Cheers, --Usernameunique (talk) 18:11, 18 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Apologizes for the last reply, I typed out a response but apparently forgot to press “Reply” so here it is: Hello! Thank you for your kind words, I’m doing well, and congrats on the promotion of In Memory of Theo Faiss! Good luck with your current FAC, but I don’t think I’ll be able to review it at the time, as I’ve honestly lost interest in reviewing a bit (for both FACs and GANs) and would like to take a little break. If I get into the reviewing mood soon I’ll definitely check the article out (hopefully while it’s still up for FAC, if it’s not promoted/archived by then), sorry if this is disappointing. Hope you’re doing well! Crystal Drawers 🎖️ (wanna talk?) 19:30, 28 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Each of the top five competitors had hundreds of points accumulated from multiple GAs. The following competitors scored more than 800 round points:

The full scores for round 4 can be seen here. During this round, contestants have claimed 10 featured articles, 11 featured lists, 8 featured-topic articles, 103 good articles, 6 good-topic articles and more than 30 Did You Know articles. In addition, competitors have worked on 11 In the News articles, and they have conducted 170 peer reviews, FA and GA reviews. The tournament points table has been updated.

Remember that any content promoted after 29 August but before the start of Round 5 can be claimed in Round 5. Bringing up Buster GA Nomination

[edit]

Hey brother. Just a courtesy message to let you know I nominated this article for Good Article status, and I intend to continue your good work with Arrested Development. This is actually my first GA nomination, and as you are another significant contributor, I thought I'd let you know. Also pinging @Mjks28 Edlectro28 (talk) 21:51, 15 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Always happy to see more AD editors! But right now I’m not sure the article is GAN ready. Right now, the Themes section is a bit underdeveloped when I know for a fact it could definitely be longer and there’s a lot more info to include, especially from books revolving around AD’s themes. Production could also be expanded, especially on Steve Holt’s casting which I know has a solid amount of info out there. The Reception section is also missing some viewer info that is in other articles, and the reviews are mainly just quotes that need to be expanded upon in your own words (there’s also more reviews not being used). The citations also need to be fixed and expanded upon (check out other AD GAs and their citations to see what I mean; wiki links, keeping the format consistent for titles, archiving urls when available, etc). Also, sources like Deconstructing Arrested Development are not reliable for Wikipedia use, at least I believe so. It’s definitely a good start and has GA potential, and I believe you could do it :) Crystal Drawers 🎖️ (wanna talk?) 22:42, 15 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hi! With how long Ga reviews take, I was gonna keep Improving whilst waiting. I’ve not had a chance to fully check the citations so will do that. Regarding deconstructing, basically yeah, it’s a blog and not reliable, but the information it’s giving us is so plainly obvious I thought it was okay, and I couldn’t find any sources of a writer explicitly saying it. I’ll have a deeper look. A lot of search results ended up being for buster posey hahaha. Anyway, I’ll keep going at it, could be months till I get a reviewer, especially considering the person doing yours quickly got banned for sock puppeting Edlectro28 (talk) 22:47, 15 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Sounds good! Im not planning on working on any AD articles at the moment, but if you’d like I could take a look and assist in any way I can with with the article (although most likely over the weekend). Also, regarding the last point, I believe only a handful of the articles were reviewed by that person, most were actually reviewed by a variety of users, so I wouldn’t worry about having to wait too long for your nom to be picked up Crystal Drawers 🎖️ (wanna talk?) 22:59, 15 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
If you have time, but don’t go out of your way. I only have so much time because I’ve been ill this year. Good point about the review quotes by the way, I didn’t write them, yes they’re just direct quotes it seems Edlectro28 (talk) 23:00, 15 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
It’s no problem at all. I’m very sorry to hear that you’ve been ill, I’ll keep you in my prayers, please take care 🙏 Crystal Drawers 🎖️ (wanna talk?) 23:04, 15 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Appreciate that so much. I don’t know, but for me, I’m struggling with source scarcity, so if you have some useful sources I’ve missed you could lend me, that’d be much appreciated Edlectro28 (talk) 23:54, 15 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
I’d look through some of the AD themed analysis books, I’ve used quite a few in the articles I’ve edited for the series, and they are the best for Analysis. I haven’t touched the article in a few months so I don’t really remember any of the sources i had tried to keep in mind to expand it with, so you should continue looking by searching through Google, I’d recommend. I’d also strongly advise unnominating the article for now until you’re sure it’s ready, an article going through heavy reconstructing that is still having sources for it be searched for should not be a nominee, and it could be quickfailed by a reviewer seeing that Crystal Drawers 🎖️ (wanna talk?) 15:57, 17 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
I have actually pretty much extracted as much as I can by now, so this is a bit redundant. I'd push back on removing it from nomination, it is not going through 'heavy reconstructing.' I know I may not be as established as yourself, but I think I should be given a chance rather than be dismissed. No offence Edlectro28 (talk) 16:01, 17 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Oh I didn’t mean to offend you, I apologize if I did, i was trying to offer constructive criticism. It has nothing to do with your experience as an editor, I would recommend to anyone that an article should only be nominated if it’s completely ready. Looking through it, Deconstructing AD is still used as a source, it should be removed since it appears to be nothing more than a blog. I also seem to remember finding info on Justin Grant Wade’s Steve Holt audition having some details on like what he had to say in other sources, if you could find those that would help expand it. Some of the book sources are also not formatted properly, clicking onto the text doesnt bring you down to Bibliography like it should, I also feel Themes and analysis could be expanded upon, try searching through And Philosophy and A State Of on Internet Archive to find more instances of mentioning the episode. The writing in Reception could also be fixed, some of the reviews could be given more detail and the phrasing of sentences like “Brian Tallerico from Vulture ranking the episode twelfth[22] and Jim Halden ranking it first” should be corrected. It’s definitely coming along nicely now and has improved! Crystal Drawers 🎖️ (wanna talk?) 16:08, 17 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Bibliography issue was just me putting in the wrong date. I got some info on the steve holt audition too which i added. I have looked through both of those books on google books, but I'll look through on internet archive. Edlectro28 (talk) 16:14, 17 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, after another look around I'm really sure I've extracted pretty much all I can. I don't know, maybe I'm an idiot, but the article isn't as bad Edlectro28 (talk) 16:38, 17 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
If you're not doing AD stuff, I might try and take a crack at improving it over the next few months. Edlectro28 (talk) 21:16, 16 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Sounds good. I don’t have much interest in editing for AD now so I appreciate that others have taken over in improving the episode articles. On the front page of the AD WikiProject, I wrote a guide a few months ago under “Goals” for how to write an ideal AD article, feel free to check it out Crystal Drawers 🎖️ (wanna talk?) 16:01, 17 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
