A barnstar for you

[edit]
The Original Barnstar
Every DYK nominator worries when they see their article hits the main page that suddenly there will be a bunch of edits for it in their watchlist. So imagine my delight to see those edits were your wonderful, public domain images! Thank you for your excellent contributions to Sachio Ashida. I hope this barnstar will serve as a small token of my appreciation. Best, ThaesOfereode (talk) 10:45, 27 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

A barnstar for you!

[edit]
The Tireless Contributor Barnstar
Are you trying to break the world record for barnstars? You're on your way. Just saw you uploaded a new version of St Paul's Survives back in April after it has been repeatedly deleted by others. You're a star! Viriditas (talk) 00:50, 28 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Do you take requests?

[edit]

This is in regards to File:Holland House library after an air raid.jpg There are super HQ versions floating around here and there, but they require extraction/editing to upload to commons. I believe I saw one on Getty Images and another on Internet Archive that were amazing. I would have to find you the specific image, but I thought I would run it past you. The current version on Commons is terrible. Viriditas (talk) 00:57, 28 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Could you possibly dig up links to those high quality versions? I'm having trouble digging up a version which both captures the lighting better and has a similar resolution to the one at Commons. Based5290 :3 (talk) 23:49, 31 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
There's a copy here, but it would be difficult to reconstruct. I forgot to mention that this is a set, as there are many different images from the Holland House library shoot, with the men posing all the same. I will keep looking. Viriditas (talk) 00:17, 1 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
FYI, examples of different images from the Getty set: Viriditas (talk) 00:24, 1 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
I have uploaded the photo from the book here. I did try stitching the Getty Images version in to fill the gap, but image editing doesn't seem to be my strong suit. As far as I know, there is no way to get unwatermarked versions of Getty images without just hoping someone else has paid Getty and used them on their website. The best you can do usually is getting the high res, watermarked version, then cover up the watermark with the thumbnail, unwatermarked version, sorta like here (I have tried some of those AI watermark removers, but they don't seem to work very well on Getty watermarks). Based5290 :3 (talk) 21:53, 22 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. Have you figured out yet how many there are in that series? I have seen at least three so far, but I think there are more. Viriditas (talk) 22:06, 22 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Yearbook magic

[edit]

Hello Based5290, hope you are doing well! A few months ago you worked your magic on the image at Esther Swirk Brown. I followed your advice about classmates.com, but it appears they have a paywall now. Do you know of any alternatives. (For Draft:Troim Katz Handler (surname variously Katz, Blacher, Katz-Blacher, Handler, or all of the above) who graduated from Memoir Junior High School in 1942 and Passaic High School in 1945). I also have a 20-year span that she sometimes attended either NYU, Hofstra, or Columbia. Ancestry might have something, but is also paywalled. Any tips? 1brianm7 (talk) 10:24, 17 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Don't you love sites charging for access to public domain material that they previously offered for free?
For yearbooks at the college and university level, the college/university may occasionally just have the yearbooks digitized and available online (either on their website or in the Internet Archive or in Hathitrust), but that doesn't seem to be case here :(. I believe you should have access to Ancestry through the Wikipedia Library (apparently there are some service issues but it's working fine on my end). You can also apply for free access to https://E-Yearbook.com through the Wikipedia Library, but I don't think they have yearbooks covering the years when Handler attended Passaic. Maybe in this case, though, the stars seem perfectly aligned to make sure there aren't any accessible free photos of her and you just have to throw in the towel and use a fair use photo. Sorry for not being much help. Based5290 :3 (talk) 22:15, 22 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Very nice that Ancestry's on TWL, I didn't know that. I've also applied to E-Yearbook, which has partial coverage that theoretically might include her. Here's hoping. Its really incredible my luck, six different schools all not having digitized yearbooks. Thanks for trying! Maybe I'll try my luck at WP:RX to see if anybody has classmates. 1brianm7 (talk) 00:54, 23 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

File:Rufus Rockwell Wilson.jpg

[edit]

Hi Based5290. For future reference, if you're going to relicense a non-free file like File:Rufus Rockwell Wilson.jpg as {{PD-US-expired}} or some other not non-free license, you should also replace the non-free use rationale template (e.g. {{Non-free use rationale biog}}) with the more general {{Information}} template. Leaving the non-free use rationale as may cause the bots that look for non-policy compliant non-free images to see the file as having a conflict between the rational and the license, which can sometimes mistakenly lead to the file being deleted. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:24, 26 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
