Did you know...
[edit]... that DYK is annoying? The reviewer wants to mess with your hook, then the promoter wants to dispute it, then the local copyeditor has to ping you and let you know he changed something, then when it hits the main page it still has poor grammar. All of that is also assuming you don't get NY Posted like at Jacob Huesman. I was almost NY Posted at Tommy Parks too: Template:Did you know nominations/Tommy Parks. I was able to find replacement refs though.
It's literally impossible to get a DYK through every step without someone else editing the article. That might be harder than curing cancer..... ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 20:29, 22 September 2026 (UTC)
- That's why I won't be doing as many DYKs going forward even though I've been writing a lot of articles. Unless it's something really interesting, which is basically what I've been doing anyway since I've written thousands of articles and only have 50+ DYKs. It's also annoying doing one or more QPQs. I've just been compiling my own list of DYK-type interesting factoids on articles I write that I'm going to post on BeanieFan11's talk page once a month so I don't annoy him every day. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 20:37, 22 September 2026 (UTC)
- @WikiOriginal-9: This can get overlooked:
Even though editors can never "own" an article, it is important to respect the work and ideas of your fellow contributors. Therefore, be cautious when removing or rewriting large amounts of content, particularly if this content was written by one editor ...
(WP:OWN). —Bagumba (talk) 12:40, 23 September 2026 (UTC)- Whatever happened to nominator preference? At Wikipedia_talk:Did_you_know#Joe_Pellegrini_(defensive_tackle)_(nom), Dclemens1971 said my original hook of "that Joe Pellegrini, who played for the New York Jets from 1978 to 1979, is not the same person as Joe Pellegrini, who played for the New York Jets from 1982 to 1983?" is fine but his hook is punchier "... that when the Idaho Statesman reported that Joe Pellegrini was still playing for the New York Jets, he was actually working for a local bank?" The interesting part isn't him working for a local bank. It's two people with the same unique name playing for the same team within a short span of years. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 17:00, 23 September 2026 (UTC)
- @WikiOriginal-9: It never fails. Nominator preference only applies when one is the reviewer, not the nominator. —Bagumba (talk) 21:31, 23 September 2026 (UTC)
- I actually wrote an essay about that a few months ago but I don't think anyone has noticed it yet: Wikipedia:Content review processes aren't hazing rituals. I also wrote Wikipedia:Avoid unnecessary pings, which I know is very ironic considering how much I ping you.... lol. I did a very short one as well: Wikipedia:Image placements aren't prescriptions. Any well-rounded editor needs a few essays, right? lol. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 13:11, 24 September 2026 (UTC)
- @WikiOriginal-9: Ping. Lol. Do you prefer no pings from my talk page? I generally ping more than I did years ago, figuring it's better to err on the side of people possibly missing something on their watchlist (e.g. not editing for a day or two, someone flooding with a cosmetic edit, etc.) —Bagumba (talk) 15:37, 24 September 2026 (UTC)
- Do whatever you feel like. I just saw someone request no pings in a discussion and I couldn't find anything about it so I wrote WP:NOPING lol ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 16:14, 24 September 2026 (UTC)
- @WikiOriginal-9: Re: the essay, there is Help:Notifications#Preferences and settings. People probably also ping as a form of hat tipping. WP:PERNOM semi-encourages writing your own rationale anyways. And if one really feels the need to criticize someone by name, I would feel it's a courtesy to ping them. I could see an issue with editors that WP:BADGER. —Bagumba (talk) 16:47, 24 September 2026 (UTC)
- "And if one really feels the need to criticize someone by name, I would feel it's a courtesy to ping them." Right, I wrote that in the essay too: If you're disagreeing with someone at an AfD, that is more worthy of a ping ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 16:50, 24 September 2026 (UTC)
- @WikiOriginal-9: Right. I was probably thinking more about talk pages, like if someone randomly said "X is a dick about MOS" on a random user talk page. —Bagumba (talk) 16:58, 24 September 2026 (UTC)
- "X is a dick about MOS" In that case, maybe I should have pinged Bluerules to your talk page. LOL. Just kidding, I try not to bother arguing with people that can't be reasoned with. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 17:26, 24 September 2026 (UTC)

- @WikiOriginal-9: Not sure if I brought this up before. What would you think of changing "Japanese former professional American football linebacker" to "Japanese former professional player of American football who was a linebacker" (Dirtlawyer had suggested before) It breaks up that long string of adjectives. —Bagumba (talk) 22:54, 24 September 2026 (UTC)

- The newbie at my Bo Levi Mitchell review said I should have a "Big Games" section, and called it an "innovation". Obviously, I didn't do that. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 19:36, 25 September 2026 (UTC)

Kansas City Chiefs assistant defensive line coach Tom Pratt, who had coached Yamada in Japan, told Memphis Maniax head coach Kippy Brown about Yamada.

- Can I still speak to his manager? ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 12:03, 30 September 2026 (UTC)
- I did your lead of "was a player who was" but now it's a run-on sentence. Can kids not review my articles please? I literally nominated that article only hours earlier, and BeanieFan said he was going to review it without me even asking him. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 12:30, 30 September 2026 (UTC)
- @WikiOriginal-9: Maybe they misunderstood Ms. Jones' lesson that day? Not sure it it's an actual run-on, but the team/league listing probably needs semicolons instead of commas to make the groupings more obvious if it's going to all be in one sentence. —Bagumba (talk) 15:46, 30 September 2026 (UTC)

Yeah, writing a meaningful essay is like a rite of passage for becoming a real Wikipedian. If editing was a sport, it would be the equivalent of making it to the NFL lol. Left guide (talk) 23:10, 24 September 2026 (UTC)

- (talk page watcher) @WikiOriginal-9: if you're talking about the double-nom thing, go cite {{Did you know nominations/T. J. Watt}} to prove the opposite point. Just shows how silly, arbitrary, and cherry-picked these "precedents" are, at least in effect even if not in intention. Left guide (talk) 17:18, 2 October 2026 (UTC)

- Template:Did you know nominations/King Simmons (pulled) - I thought a king hitting a deer would be interesting. Naturally I wasn't invited to the discussion where it was pulled. I wouldn't have said anything anyway though. Oh well. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 18:12, 5 October 2026 (UTC)
- @WikiOriginal-9: You're pretty much at the mercy of the in-crowd saying WP:ILIKEIT or not, and it's probably not just DYK. Such is crowd sourcing. —Bagumba (talk) 21:21, 5 October 2026 (UTC)
- After it was pulled, Narutolovehinata5 asked at Template:Did you know nominations/King Simmons if I wanted to propose a new hook. I replied "no thanks" but BeanieFan tried to save it by proposing "... that King Simmons hit a deer while driving to the airport to join a Canadian Football League team?" Naruto then replied "Sounds good" but a week later someone else came by and said it needed a new reviewer? "Sounds good" isn't enough? You have to add all the bells and whistles or it's not official? Then someone else reviewed it again (still stating it's not interesting of course). Naruto replied "I don't know about others, but I thought of the deer incident as more of a funny anecdote rather than anything Earth shattering." Well, then why did Naruto say "sounds good" earlier then??? I wish people would make up their minds on this hook...... ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 15:12, 21 October 2026 (UTC)

... that literally every Canadian newspaper is WP:LOCAL? ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 13:25, 6 October 2026 (UTC)
- @WikiOriginal-9: WP:JUSTANESSAY lol. AFAIK, the "local" concept is only formalized at WP:LOCALCORP. Multiple sources reqt generally weeds out covg solely in one local rag. —Bagumba (talk) 15:29, 6 October 2026 (UTC)
- Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Heather Rankin (curler): How much coverage is needed to counter BLPREQUESTDELETE? Seriously. - The bar of coverage needed to surpass BLPREQUESTDELETE is so high, I'm not even going to bother looking for stuff. - I have GAs with less SIGCOV than Rankin. BLPREQUESTDELETE could get a lot of my articles deleted, even potentially some NFL players. The NFL has a lot of fanboys that come rushing to keep articles though, unlike curling lol. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 16:38, 12 October 2026 (UTC)

Did you know that Charles Woodson is once again () the first defensive player to win the Heisman even though all of the early Heisman winners played defense too? Before I only had to fight Centurion Seraph, which was still a chore because he's one of the biggest edit warriors around. Now I have to fight Bluerules too..... I was almost gleeful when I saw them run into one another at J. J. McCarthy, Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_College_football#J.J._McCarthy. Did they both violate 3RR? Inexplicable typos
[edit]Charles Godfrey (American football): This guy was in the NFL from 2008 to 2015 and no one ever read the first sentence of the article ("At the University of Iowa Godfrey appeared in 47 contest with 28 starts, 25 coming at cornerback, 2 at strong safety, and 1 at free safety.") Time out for user?
[edit]This user has been vandalizing NBA roster pages with incorrect heights/weights/positions and will not respond to talk page notes. We are trying to get NBA articles and templates up to date for the season opening in Tuesday. Could you give this dude a temporary block to send a message? Rikster2 (talk) 00:42, 18 October 2026 (UTC)
- @Rikster2 Blocked. There was some IP that used to do similar roster template vandalism, primarily to Toronto as well. This one is different location now, but proxies are a dime a dozen. Let me know if there's more in the future. Might need to start protecting specific team templates again if user blocks aren't sufficient. —Bagumba (talk) 04:56, 18 October 2026 (UTC)
