Wikipedia:WikiProject Weather/Sources

[edit]

I am restarting the creation of a big list of RS and non-RS sources used or discussed related to weather events. Since this will be extremely useful going forward, if you have any sources that you want to add, please add them. Cheers! The Weather Event Writer (Talk Page) 20:49, 30 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

thanks for the heads up, I'm still new-ish to wikipedia (been here since around August last year but am inconsistent with how often I edit) so I dunno what is officially considered reliable or not tbh. I mostly base it off of if I've seen multiple different sources say the same or similar things, or if the NWS has put out an official statement or tweet. AutisticLoser (talk) 20:53, 30 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
Well, welcome to Wikipedia! You don't need to worry about adding sources to the list. But, you can use it as a good guide! Over time, some of the long-time editors (like myself) have discussed several sources. If/when you decide to create an article, that list can possibly help tell you which sources are good ones to use (like the National Weather Service) and which sources should not be used!
Anyway, welcome to Wikipedia! If you have any questions at all, especially about any weather-related topics, you are more than welcome to ask me! Have a wonderful day! The Weather Event Writer (Talk Page) 21:16, 30 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

Citing sources with templates

[edit]

Hi, I noticed in a lot of your edits that you're citing sources manually instead of using templates. Citation templates make it a lot easier to cite sources because you just input the information and it automatically creates the citation with proper formatting, and it also makes it easier for other people to make changes. You should check out WP:Citation templates for more info. Take care and lmk if you need any help!! (even tho I'm still pretty new here haha) Yobatna (talk) 04:29, 23 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

I actually mainly use citation generators, but good to know, thanks! AutisticLoser (talk) 04:50, 23 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
will add that I find it kinda complicated some of the stuff on Wikipedia, not very good at citations as an example, or with creating tables as another example. Maybe I'm just dumb, or maybe it's just that I'm new, but still, I find it complicated tbh AutisticLoser (talk) 04:52, 23 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
I know how you feel, it was the same for me when I started editing on here. Tables are still a bit of a mystery to me, but for citations it's pretty much just picking out info from the page and putting it into the categories. I'll also add that for some types of citations, manually inputting the information can be more accurate than what citation generators scrape from it. On another note, you can learn a lot from how other people do these complicated things, and there's no harm in trying/experimenting with it! Yobatna (talk) 05:10, 23 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
true, I guess I'll just do my best. Thanks for reaching out! AutisticLoser (talk) 05:12, 23 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

Ok then Hussain Romuzi Nothing to see here… 23:07, 19 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
Here's someone else who has an issue with that name. Without the context given here, this can be interpreted both as self-deprecation and a slur, and despite your intentions, many will just interpret it as a slur. And not many will take the time to investigate, even on Wikipedia. Intent vs. impact and all that. Paradoctor (talk) 04:00, 21 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
Alright fine, I requested a name change to "AutisticYapper", I don't think that's derogatory at all. I myself am Autistic, and I Yap a lot. If it gets rejected, then I'll have to think of a different one cause I'm bad at thinking of names. AutisticLoser (talk) 04:15, 21 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
Sounds fine to me, don't think there will be any issues. If I'm wrong about that, I'll help you come up with names as my penance. ;) Happy editing! Paradoctor (talk) 05:01, 21 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

Couldn't tell you. Are you sure you actually made a request? I see nothing in special:contributions/AutisticLoser indicating you did. Paradoctor (talk) 06:52, 21 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
yeah, I just double checked and it's pending. I did it via the global rename request and had to add an email. I figured that would ensure I don't have this issue on the off chance I use other wikis AutisticLoser (talk) 06:57, 21 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

3 may turkey tornado outbreak

[edit]

the 3 may outbreak reachess pass 30 OIS. if we take the akçamezra tornado as its current rating it will score 10 points. The viranşehir tornado will score 5 points and the other 7 IF2s(some of them were low ef3s) will score 2-5 each(14-35 points in total) and with the 1 IF1.5 that will score 2 points.Which makes the total score 31-40 points so it counts as a major outbreak ⚡ StormL00ver ⚡ 15:10, 26 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

No, the 7 IF2s would count as 2 points each, for a total of 14. The IF3 would be 5 points, 10 if upgraded. Let's assume for this argument it was (it hasn't been yet). That is 24 points. As for the IF2.5, Grazulis hasn't to my knowledge commented on what they should be, so we're forced to just treat it as a 2 for the purposes of this, meaning it gets 2 points, putting us at 26. Even if it were upgraded to IF3, and the current IF3 were upgraded to IF4, we would only be at 29 points. As for "some of them were low EF3s), what you are missing about the different tornado scales is that a mid-rage IF3 with winds rated at 180 mph doesn't actually have a higher damage rating than a mid-range EF3 with windspeeds of 150-155 mph, they just view the damage as requiring higher windspeeds needed to reach said damage. Hence why we don't list the 2021 South Moravia tornado as being the sole strongest rated tornado of 2021 (as the raw windspeeds of both the IF and F scales would seem to suggest), and instead list it alongside the Newnan, Monette-Samburg, and Western Kentucky tornadoes as all being the highest rated tornadoes of the year. AutisticYapper (talk) 15:53, 26 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
actually IF3 will score 10 points because akçamezra tornado was 180 mph so it would be 31 points also the viranşehir tornado was a weak low end ef4(5 points) ⚡ StormL00ver ⚡ 15:54, 26 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Also akçamezra is in discussion for a upgrade so it is very possible that this tornado had 200 mph+ even at its current point which is 180 mph, it will score 10 points so it would be 31 points not 26 ⚡ StormL00ver ⚡ 15:56, 26 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Also you cant say EF3 is same as an IF3 in terms of damage.USA has wooden houses and Europe has concrete. This doesnt mean the tornado was weaker so it will have 10 points instead of 5 ⚡ StormL00ver ⚡ 15:58, 26 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Again, it's not based on raw windspeeds, but rather what the tornado is rated. Tornadoes with a rating of 2 get 2 points, 3 get 5, 4 get 10, and 5 get 15. Below 2 get 0. So for this, it's 7 times 2 equals 14. Let's assume that the IF2.5 gets upgraded to an IF3 (not seen any mention of this but just to prove a point). That gets 5 points. Then, let's assume the IF3 gets upgraded to IF4, that's 10 points. 10+5+14=29, one short of major status. Also, I would hesitate to call almost any outbreak a "violent" outbreak unless it had multiple violent tornadoes from different supercells, or at a minimum at least one violent-rated tornado along with several high-end intense rated (EF3 or equivalent) rated tornadoes that plausibly could have been violent rated. Examples of events I would call "violent outbreaks" would be last year's mid-march outbreak, or 3/31/2023. One of the exceptions to this where for just one supercell producing EF4 tornado(es) would be 12-10-2021, for obvious reasons, but this outbreak was not a case of being that high-level exceptional.
As for your last point, Europe might have better building codes, but that doesn't change the fact that this is based on what the tornado was rated, not what the rating says the windspeeds were. AutisticYapper (talk) 16:04, 26 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
this doesnt mean An IF4 and an EF4 should get the same points.That is scientificly wrong.So An IF4 tornado(above 200 mph) shouldnt get the same point as an EF4 ⚡ StormL00ver ⚡ 16:06, 26 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Also that is for the Enhanced Fujita scale so you should convert the IF tornadoes to the EF rating they would have got if they were in USA ⚡ StormL00ver ⚡ 16:07, 26 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Also this outbreak should be violent instead of major or significant because 9 of the 14 tornadoes were IF2 or higher(if a tornado outbreak has strong tornadoes consisting above 50 percent of the tornadoes that formed in the outbreak it would get a ''Violent'' tornado outbreak status) ⚡ StormL00ver ⚡ 16:11, 26 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
I feel like we should move this conversation to the talk page of the outbreak, as then more editors could chime in without having to be pinged into this, having it on my talk page is a little silly when it's a page specific thing tbh AutisticYapper (talk) 16:22, 26 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

The Monthly Wiki-Weather Review - Issue 1 (September 1, 2026)

[edit]

Volume I, Issue 1, September 1, 2026
←(Previous issues) · 1 · 2 →

The Monthly Wiki-Weather Review

This is the first edition for what will hopefully be a monthly newsletter involving Wikipedia's weather articles, including the severe weather and tropical cyclones projects. The newsletter aims to provide in summary the recent activities and developments of the WikiProject. If you wish to receive or discontinue your subscription to this newsletter, please visit the mailing list. Past editions can be viewed here.

Development, Reminders, and Updates

Series of weather topics that need expansion The following articles are the earliest in a series of lists/articles, and including the gap going back to the previous entry in the series. These are articles that need to be written.

Of note, the yearly "Weather of YYYY" could be a useful parent article for every weather article. For a well-written (and well-sourced) example, see this timeline in the Weather of 2023 article.

Image of the month

Devastating floods, possibly caused by a glacial collapse, hit the China–Nepal border on August 26. These floods destroyed numerous settlements and killed over 1,000 people (with thousands still missing). The above image is a Landsat 9 view of debris flow from the floods.

Selected new articles

The following articles were written/published this year. It excludes any of sub-articles within Weather of 2026.

Tropical cyclone Merge-a-thon

Longtime editors and lurkers might have noticed an uptick in the number of article mergers this year. A discussion in December 2025 talked about articles for fish storms or were otherwise had minor impacts. As Hurricane Noah summarized, "if a storm isn't being discussed after the fact for meteorological notability and impacts were minor or nil, there shouldn't be an article. Since then, 8 featured articles and 76 good articles have been merged. In a recent AFD, Quxyz mentioned their own minimum threshold for a tropical cyclone article (1,000 words and 20,000 bytes).

Help requested for specific topics

There are a few ongoing projects that are needed in Wiki-Project weather, separate from any requested articles.

  • After years of discussion on standardizing the colors for tropical cyclone tracks, there is an ongoing project to replace the roughly 2,200 track maps across the hundreds of storm/season articles. One of the members helping with the track maps, 2003 LN6 (talk · contribs), estimated that "about 15–20% of the historic track maps are recolored properly, but progress is being made. I have personally been working on the North Atlantic tracks, but I have observed the work of many others as well."
Another member working on older Atlantic and season track maps, JasonHo1222 (talk · contribs), asked, "can I be quoted in the newsletter too?" Thanks to 2003 LN6, JasonHo1222, and all of the other users helping with this task.
  • The tropical cyclone season button bars have outdated coding that should ideally be replaced. The talk page goes into detail, but basically swapping out two parts of the template ("List of storms" and "Statistics" sub-articles, which we don't have anymore) in favor of the yearly "Weather of YYYY" and "Tropical cyclones in YYYY" articles.
  • List of tropical cyclones producing snow - inspired by the recent Hurricane Lala that produced snowfall in Hawaii, there is a consensus that such an article could be useful.

Comments or suggestions? This is the first of what will hopefully be a long-running newsletter. If you have any suggestions or complaints (such as them being in a different order in the section header), click on the previous links or try the newsletter talk page.

The Monthly Wiki-Weather Review Issue 2: Electric Boogaloo Edition

This is the second edition the monthly newsletter involving Wikipedia's weather articles, including the severe weather and tropical cyclones projects. The newsletter aims to provide in summary the recent activities and developments of the WikiProject. If you wish to receive or discontinue your subscription to this newsletter, please visit the mailing list. Past editions can be viewed here.

Editors: Hurricanehink (HH), Eoline (E)

New Featured and Good Content

Since the last issue, the following became good articles :

Selected new articles

The following articles were written/published in the last month (or were missed). It excludes any of sub-articles within Weather of 2026.

Development, Reminders, and Updates

  • The NCDC Storm Events database recently updated, which changed all URL's. Although E changed most of them, there might be some old ones that still need to be fixed.
  • The Atlantic hurricane reanalysis was updated on September 16 for 1971–75. Several editors helped to update the articles, although some articles still need to be updated, such as adding summaries of the new systems to the season articles.
  • A recent discussion found consensus for removing most TCFA's (tropical cyclone formation alerts) from typhoon season articles. As the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) is not the official agency for the basin, and many season articles are too long, this bit of information is generally not needed. Exceptions unclude when it's the JTWC peak for a system, such as a JMA-only TS. There is also a discussion about removing the JTWC term "Super Typhoon", partly due to PAGASA using that term, and because JMA uses "Violent typhoon". This would affect infoboxes and the leads of some articles. Future goals including using JMA data for track maps.
  • There is a discussion about removing non-European tornadoes from the annual "List of European tornadoes", stemming from a discussion about tornadoes in Turkey, Russia, and north Africa that are not technically part of Europe.
  • If you see new editors (and even current editors), remember not to be bite-y, and try and keep things civil and welcoming. Some people might edit for the first time when there is a major weather event in the news. It can be helpful to reach out to users directly. HH sometimes use a phrase like, "I see you have an interest in weather articles. While your edit might technically be true, it did not include a source. If you're interested in editing, I suggest you create a username so you can join the hundreds of editors working on the thousands of hurricane/tornado/blizzard/drought/haboob articles." (OK maybe just one of those weather types)

Image of the month - Hurricane Polo offshore Mexico

Hurricane Polo became the second-strongest recorded Pacific hurricane on September 22, when Hurricane Hunters recorded a minimum central pressure of 892 mbar (26.3 inHg). Polo attained Category 5 status three times before weakening and striking northwestern Mexico twice.

Tasks/projects from previous newsletter - Issue 1 had a section for the series of weather articles. This included seasons or weather events by year, such as from Weather of 1946 to 1985 and from 1985 to 2000. Other ongoing tasks include updating tropical cyclone track maps, button bar templates, and changing the coding for the season infobox template to allow for violent typhoons.

WCNA 2026 by E

The 2026 edition of WikiConference North America was held in Edmonton, Canada, throughout the week of September 21, with at least one project member in attendance. Main topics included discussion of Wikimedia administration, WikiPortraits, and Wikimedia Commons. Interested editors are invited to read through this presentation, which was presented by User:Z1720 during the conference; it discusses how to write featured articles.

A more complete weather encyclopedia

Although Wikipedia isn't specifically a weather encyclopedia, it fulfills that role to an extent. The "List of [weather events] by area" series is getting finished one by one, even if there are still a lot to go. The following areas are among the most complete:

Many areas could have a variety of lists. There's a draft for Tornadoes in Florida, which, if published, would join the above list. There is also a draft for Snow in Texas, which would also add Texas to the above list, assuming you counted the dab and quasi-article that is the List of Texas hurricanes (which you could help by adding climatology, the deadliest Texas tornadoes, and a list of (E)F5 tornadoes in the state). If you're interested in working on one of the potential location-based lists of weather impacts in an area, be bold and try it (maybe starting with a draft), or ask HH for help.

The Merge-a-Thon Sweeps Up Tornadoes

The previous newsletter mentioned the tropical cyclone merge-a-thon in which around 100 storm articles have been merged. There has also been an increase in proposed mergers of tornado-related articles to their parent tornado outbreak. Some of the main arguments have been about sustained lasting coverage (six months after the event), and whether the individual articles are a content fork from the outbreak article. There remains a need to codify tornado notability standards, with regards to outbreak and single tornado articles.

The Paradox of Tolerance by HH

It's important to assume good faith and be open-minded/welcoming as we build a more perfect encyclopedia. HH admits he has pushed his own preferences a bit too much at times. Discussions need to remain civil. But the Paradox of Tolerance can lead to bad outcomes. For instance, there has been a rise in articles written by AI, which is not allowed. Now that Wikipedia is over 25 years old, it has its fair share of people who were blocked, including sockpuppets trying to disrupt the positive legacy we've all built. That does not mean to assume that all new users are either using AI or are sockpuppets! Most editors started just like you. Still, if it seems like users are baiting you to engage in discussion, that might be in bad faith. At those times, be sure to take a deep breath, and remember that there's no deadline. Sometimes, a troublesome user will out themselves and get blocked, whether due to AI-writing or other bad habits. "If it looks/swims/quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck. If you have evidence someone is abusing more than one Wikipedia account, see Sockpuppet investigations.

Random fun thing found during Wikipedia research While working on Hurricane Agnes, 12george1* found this legendary document from the NHC archives:

That the guest editor cut the tip of his middle finger of his left hand off this evening making a salad, and has left blood all over the typewriter, and that this finger is the one that hits all the e's, d's, c's and a few other things and is now very sore. I quit!

!!!!! @@@@@ ##### $$$$$ %%%%% ¢¢¢¢¢ &&&&& ***** ((((((

Don't be like this guy and make sure you're all careful editing!
*Due to a mishap in the previous newsletter, HH would like to formally apologize for linking users in the newsletter, and causing users to receive dozens of notifications. From now on, only the newsletter editors will be linked (so you can message us if you wanted).

Comments or suggestions? This is the second edition of what will hopefully be a long-running newsletter. If you have any suggestions or complaints (such as them being in a different order in the section header), click on the previous links or try the newsletter talk page.

Stop icon You appear to be engaged in an edit war at Hurricane Lowell. An edit war occurs when editors who disagree about the content of a page repeatedly revert each other's changes. Please do not revert or undo the edits made by other editors when your changes are reverted. Instead, use the talk page to discuss how the page can represent consensus among the editors involved. Here is some advice on how to do this. If discussions get stuck, you can request a third opinion, ask for help at a relevant noticeboard, or seek dispute resolution.

Edit warring can result in being blocked from editing, especially if you violate the three-revert rule, which states that an editor must not perform more than three reverts within 24 hours on one page. Undoing any other editor's work, in whole or in part, involving the same or different material, is a revert. You can still be blocked for edit warring even if you do not violate the three-revert rule should your behavior indicate that you intend to continue reverting repeatedly. There was already an article for the outbreak itself, the article I nominated for deletion was a content fork, and I felt like the tornado itself didn't really pass WP:NTORNADO, due to limited, if any, lasting coverage AutisticYapper (talk) 21:07, 8 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Italicization of tropical cyclone names

[edit]

Hi AutisticYapper, just wanted to double-check this with you

It's been a while since I've been active at WPTC, but I've never seen a tropical cyclone name italicized on Wikipedia before. Where'd you read they're supposed to be italicized?

it's when they're first named they are italicized I've noticed, such as where I had fixed it to be italicized. Don't know if it's an official policy, but just something I've noticed is generally done. If this is incorrect then apologies! AutisticYapper (talk) 19:03, 9 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
