Information icon Welcome to Wikipedia and thank you for your contribution(s). However, as a general rule, while user talk pages permit a small degree of generalisation, other talk pages such as Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Weather are strictly for discussing improvements to their associated main pages, and many of them have special instructions on the top. They are not a search engine, a chatbot, or a general discussion forum about the article's topic or any other topic. Information icon Hello, I'm LuniZunie. I wanted to let you know that one or more of your recent contributions have been undone because they appeared to be gaming the system. Gaming the system is defined as misusing Wikipedia's policies for personal advantage at the expense of other editors. Wikipedia policies exist to support constructive collaboration, not to be used tactically to disrupt or "win" disputes. Gaming the system is easily spotted and your contributions are always public. Examples of gaming the system may include, but are not limited to:

  • Wikilawyering — excessively literal or selective interpretation of policies to sidestep their intent
  • Cherry-picking wording from a policy to support a view that does not in fact match with or comply with policy
  • Repeatedly pushing a viewpoint with which the community consensus clearly does not agree
  • Gaslighting — such as rewriting history or denying clear evidence of prior actions
  • Abuse of process, including but not limited to gaming of the AfC process (ex: removing the record of previous reviews)
  • Deliberately reverting another editor's edits in one article in retaliation for a dispute elsewhere
  • Making unconstructive or trivial edits to raise your user access level

You can find more details on gaming the system, including more examples of potentially problematic behavior, at Wikipedia:Gaming the system. If you have any questions, you can ask for assistance at the Teahouse or the Help desk, or reach out to me at my talk page. Thanks. – LuniZunie(talk) 00:21, 24 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

The Monthly Wiki-Weather Review Issue 2: Electric Boogaloo Edition

This is the second edition the monthly newsletter involving Wikipedia's weather articles, including the severe weather and tropical cyclones projects. The newsletter aims to provide in summary the recent activities and developments of the WikiProject. If you wish to receive or discontinue your subscription to this newsletter, please visit the mailing list. Past editions can be viewed here.

Editors: Hurricanehink (HH), Eoline (E)

New Featured and Good Content

Since the last issue, the following became good articles :

Selected new articles

The following articles were written/published in the last month (or were missed). It excludes any of sub-articles within Weather of 2026.

Development, Reminders, and Updates

  • The NCDC Storm Events database recently updated, which changed all URL's. Although E changed most of them, there might be some old ones that still need to be fixed.
  • The Atlantic hurricane reanalysis was updated on September 16 for 1971–75. Several editors helped to update the articles, although some articles still need to be updated, such as adding summaries of the new systems to the season articles.
  • A recent discussion found consensus for removing most TCFA's (tropical cyclone formation alerts) from typhoon season articles. As the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) is not the official agency for the basin, and many season articles are too long, this bit of information is generally not needed. Exceptions unclude when it's the JTWC peak for a system, such as a JMA-only TS. There is also a discussion about removing the JTWC term "Super Typhoon", partly due to PAGASA using that term, and because JMA uses "Violent typhoon". This would affect infoboxes and the leads of some articles. Future goals including using JMA data for track maps.
  • There is a discussion about removing non-European tornadoes from the annual "List of European tornadoes", stemming from a discussion about tornadoes in Turkey, Russia, and north Africa that are not technically part of Europe.
  • If you see new editors (and even current editors), remember not to be bite-y, and try and keep things civil and welcoming. Some people might edit for the first time when there is a major weather event in the news. It can be helpful to reach out to users directly. HH sometimes use a phrase like, "I see you have an interest in weather articles. While your edit might technically be true, it did not include a source. If you're interested in editing, I suggest you create a username so you can join the hundreds of editors working on the thousands of hurricane/tornado/blizzard/drought/haboob articles." (OK maybe just one of those weather types)

Image of the month - Hurricane Polo offshore Mexico

Hurricane Polo became the second-strongest recorded Pacific hurricane on September 22, when Hurricane Hunters recorded a minimum central pressure of 892 mbar (26.3 inHg). Polo attained Category 5 status three times before weakening and striking northwestern Mexico twice.

Tasks/projects from previous newsletter - Issue 1 had a section for the series of weather articles. This included seasons or weather events by year, such as from Weather of 1946 to 1985 and from 1985 to 2000. Other ongoing tasks include updating tropical cyclone track maps, button bar templates, and changing the coding for the season infobox template to allow for violent typhoons.

WCNA 2026 by E

The 2026 edition of WikiConference North America was held in Edmonton, Canada, throughout the week of September 21, with at least one project member in attendance. Main topics included discussion of Wikimedia administration, WikiPortraits, and Wikimedia Commons. Interested editors are invited to read through this presentation, which was presented by User:Z1720 during the conference; it discusses how to write featured articles.

A more complete weather encyclopedia

Although Wikipedia isn't specifically a weather encyclopedia, it fulfills that role to an extent. The "List of [weather events] by area" series is getting finished one by one, even if there are still a lot to go. The following areas are among the most complete:

Many areas could have a variety of lists. There's a draft for Tornadoes in Florida, which, if published, would join the above list. There is also a draft for Snow in Texas, which would also add Texas to the above list, assuming you counted the dab and quasi-article that is the List of Texas hurricanes (which you could help by adding climatology, the deadliest Texas tornadoes, and a list of (E)F5 tornadoes in the state). If you're interested in working on one of the potential location-based lists of weather impacts in an area, be bold and try it (maybe starting with a draft), or ask HH for help.

The Merge-a-Thon Sweeps Up Tornadoes

The previous newsletter mentioned the tropical cyclone merge-a-thon in which around 100 storm articles have been merged. There has also been an increase in proposed mergers of tornado-related articles to their parent tornado outbreak. Some of the main arguments have been about sustained lasting coverage (six months after the event), and whether the individual articles are a content fork from the outbreak article. There remains a need to codify tornado notability standards, with regards to outbreak and single tornado articles.

The Paradox of Tolerance by HH

It's important to assume good faith and be open-minded/welcoming as we build a more perfect encyclopedia. HH admits he has pushed his own preferences a bit too much at times. Discussions need to remain civil. But the Paradox of Tolerance can lead to bad outcomes. For instance, there has been a rise in articles written by AI, which is not allowed. Now that Wikipedia is over 25 years old, it has its fair share of people who were blocked, including sockpuppets trying to disrupt the positive legacy we've all built. That does not mean to assume that all new users are either using AI or are sockpuppets! Most editors started just like you. Still, if it seems like users are baiting you to engage in discussion, that might be in bad faith. At those times, be sure to take a deep breath, and remember that there's no deadline. Sometimes, a troublesome user will out themselves and get blocked, whether due to AI-writing or other bad habits. "If it looks/swims/quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck. If you have evidence someone is abusing more than one Wikipedia account, see Sockpuppet investigations.

Random fun thing found during Wikipedia research While working on Hurricane Agnes, 12george1* found this legendary document from the NHC archives:

That the guest editor cut the tip of his middle finger of his left hand off this evening making a salad, and has left blood all over the typewriter, and that this finger is the one that hits all the e's, d's, c's and a few other things and is now very sore. I quit!

!!!!! @@@@@ ##### $$$$$ %%%%% ¢¢¢¢¢ &&&&& ***** ((((((

Don't be like this guy and make sure you're all careful editing!
*Due to a mishap in the previous newsletter, HH would like to formally apologize for linking users in the newsletter, and causing users to receive dozens of notifications. From now on, only the newsletter editors will be linked (so you can message us if you wanted).

Comments or suggestions? This is the second edition of what will hopefully be a long-running newsletter. If you have any suggestions or complaints (such as them being in a different order in the section header), click on the previous links or try the newsletter talk page.

Since the last issue, the following became good articles :

In the news

The following 2026 weather articles were written/published in the last month (or were missed).

Tropical cyclones in YYYY: The Series

There are several series of yearly weather articles. This month, HH wanted to focus on the yearly Tropical cyclones in YYYY'. The first of this type of article was 2010's annual list, created in 2011, although it was largely a disambiguation page, until TheAustinMan expanded it in 2014. There was an AFD for this article in 2018, but was kept, following an extensive rewrite by Hurricane Noah. Also in 2018, the annual TC lists for 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018 were created, with the 2018 list being the first one created since 2010. There are annual lists of tropical cyclones from 1990 to 2026, with 1990's being published this month.

There have been recent discussions regarding these lists, such as whether the year's longest-lasting storm should include tropical disturbance status (inspired by the recent Hurricane Nolo), and a recent discussion that proposed adding individual storm track maps to the tables, as seen here. Eventually, there should be yearly tropical cyclone lists going back to at least 1900, likely 1850. Every year since 1861 has known tropical cyclones on Wikipedia across at least three basins. 1838-1860 have tropical cyclones in at least two basins. 1837 had 11 known Atlantic tropical cyclones, included in an article with the other 1830s Atlantic storms. That suggests that going by decade would be the appropriate decision at some point (1840s perhaps). If you're curious, 1798 is the most recent year that has no known tropical cyclones. But there was a notable blizzard that year, so a theoretical Weather of 1798 article would not be empty.

The following editors joined Wikipedia:WikiProject Weather/Severe weather/Tropical cyclones this year: RunningOnBrains, Tarou-Rai, Mesocyclonic93, Ari 1600, CharlieRidesRollerCoasters, Elidoesbnuuy, IrishSurfer21, Kphlspotting, Kenyouseeme, shane, TornadoEF4, WXchaser, Catlover1519, Pillar8908, LuniZunie, Hurricamia75, EnjoyLightEnjoyTruth, Hurricane Jacob, ViridLeWiki, Mitchsavl, Nibnab43637, Pogowo, CycloneTheta, ArcherAndVance, BlueForce87, Ilikereadinespeciallyenglishbooks, Scourgezoned, Guythatlikeshorses2, OneFortyTwoK, Novalite.Wx, KM1018, Tkin VN014, Justcgi, and XenonTNG

Welcome all of you and happy editing!

If you aren't a member of the WikiProject but want to join, then please do! We have hundreds of editors working on tens of thousands of articles. And if you aren't a member of the WikiProject and don't want to join, and don't like this newsletter, then I'm sorry for the choices that led you to reading this. You can stop now and read another random article.

From the vaults

The article Snow is over 25 years old, and here is what that article looked like on September 20, 2001

Snow is a crystaline form of solid water or ice, consisting of a multitude of snow flakes. Since snow is a composite of innumerable discrete entities, each of which is unevenly formed, it is an open structure which makes it soft, unless packed together by external pressure. Snow is commonly formed as water vapor concenses at high altitude in the atmosphere and subsequently falls to the surface of the earth. Snow is a prerequisite for many of the winter sports and much beloved by children. In regions where snow is scarce but temperature low enough, snow cannons may be utilized to produce an adequate amount for sporting purposes.... Snow may be used as a construction material, and is the primary component in for example igloos.

The Snow article is now a good article, and survived a good article reassessment in 2017. This just goes to show that your edits could be the foundation for edits 25 years later.

Tasks/projects from previous newsletter - Issue 1 had a section for the series of weather articles. This included seasons or weather events by year, updating tropical cyclone track maps, button bar templates, and changing the coding for the season infobox template to allow for severe tropical storms for WPAC. Issue 2 mentioned the various weather-related lists by area that are still needed. There are drafts for lists of tornadoes in both Florida and Oregon.

Development, Reminders, and Updates

  • On October 5, the tropical cyclone WikiProject turned 21, during the busy 2005 AHS. Mother Nature celebrated this year with a slew of hurricanes. For those curious, the Climate WikiProject (now Climate task force) began on March 9, 2006; the severe weather WikiProject on May 7, 2007; and the WikiProject Winter Storms (now Non-tropical storms task force) on December 22, 2007. The entire Weather WikiProject originally began as WikiProject Meteorology on March 19, 2006.
  • The 1971-75 Atlantic hurricane reanalysis has largely been implemented, such as the tracks, prose, additions, and deletions.
  • Following a proposal in September, Pacific typhoon season articles now have infobox parameters to be able to show very strong/violent typhoons, which are the JMA classifications roughly equivalent to major hurricanes/super typhoon status.
  • The 2025–26 Asian winter was deleted after an AFD. Longtime editors might (or not) be surprised that the first user to comment made their two (and only) edits, commenting only on the AFD. While the behavior was unusual, the second comment pointed out that "2024-25 Asian winter and 2023-24 Asian winter are likely in worse condition then this article". HH replied with "other stuff exists" as something to avoid in AFD, and acknowledged that these other winter articles might survive the chopping block (for WP:SYNTH reasons).
  • On a more technical note, the NWS Western Regional Headquarters observation maps and time series no longer include international observations. Archiving information is important, and so is using reliable sources. If you are used to using NCDC and US-based sources, they might not always be the most reliable (such as the US no longer keeping track of billion-dollar disasters). Familiarize yourself with more international sources - HH experienced this recently on the Hurricane Lala talk page over its damage total. After a consensus was formed to split out List of Asian tornadoes in 2026 from List of European tornadoes in 2026, various editors began disputing over what articles should cover which tornadoes, especially over whether tornadoes in Turkey, Russia, and surrounding regions should be classified as European or Asian. This also led to the creation of a draft for Middle Eastern tornadoes in 2026. Additionally, many of the discussions related to this contained rather un-WP:CIVIL behavior, and LN would like to take this as an opportunity to remind everyone to respect other editors and the work they put into projects. The discussions led to an ANI thread, multiple sanctions, and two users getting blocked.

Image of the month - Typhoon Champi

Typhoon Champi became the strongest storm (so far) of the 2026 Pacific typhoon season, with a minimum central pressure of 895 mbar (26.4 inHg). Champi had three different sandboxes at one point, leading to a series of pages being moved back and forth, before the draft was published.

Humo(u)r

Tropical Storm Zeta in 2005 led to so much confusion and reverting that it was included in Wikipedia's lamest edit wars. For those who don't know, Zeta formed in late December 2005, and lasted until 2006. The debate was over how much to include Zeta in the 2006 Atlantic hurricane season, and indeed, the 2006 timeline was created on New Year's Eve while Zeta was active. Ultimately, Zeta was reduced to a footnote in the 2006 timeline, and a brief mention in the lead and storm summary. Sadly, there was another lame edit war when the 2007 season began early, and whether the season was still considered "active" (or future) after Andrea dissipated (but before the season officially began on June 1). Thankfully, the precedent was set, so by the time 2016 came around and we had Alex in January, the season was considered active, even after Alex dissipated.
