Editor of the Week

[edit]
Editor of the Week
Your ongoing efforts to improve the encyclopedia have not gone unnoticed: You have been selected as Editor of the Week in recognition of your great contributions! (courtesy of the Wikipedia Editor Retention Project)

User:GGOTCC submitted the following nomination for Editor of the Week:

I nominate Akaza to be Editor of the Week. Akaza is, without a doubt, one of our community's foremost experts in the maritime history of the Great Lakes. As of writing, he has two featured articles, 35 DYK hooks, and 27 Good Articles, all in his area of expertise. His brilliant prose (my favorite is SS D. M. Clemson (1903)) makes articles he writes easily identifiable while being both engaging and informative. Beyond his writing, Akaza's sincerity, politeness, and good conduct help build WP:SHIPS and the English Wikipedia into the collaborative project we all aspire to be apart of. Always an enjoyable editor to work with. This nomination seconded by Vanderwaalforces.

You can copy the following text to your user page to display a user box proclaiming your selection as Editor of the Week:

@Buster7 oh my goodness! I feel like going out into the street and shouting this out to the world. This has absolutely made my month!
Thank you so much, @GGOTCC and @Vanderwaalforces! Akaza [talk] 14:17, 8 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Oh no, don’t do that, they might think you’re going crazy, bahahahaha. Anyway, I think you’re a very talented Wikipedian and Maritimer, if that’s a word. Vanderwaalforces (talk) 14:48, 8 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
I still might. XD
This news has raised my mood immensely.
Also, thank you! Hearing that means a lot. Akaza [talk] 17:11, 9 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Good article nominations RfC

[edit]

Hi Akaza,

There is an ongoing Request for Comment (RfC) at Wikipedia:Good article nominations/August 2026 RfC, which you may be interested in because in the past year, you have nominated or reviewed more than one good article nomination. This message has also been sent to all subscribers to the Good Article Gazette. The RfC contains many proposals (33 at the time of writing), which are split into the following categories: nominators, reviewers, reviews, volunteer roles, reviewing initiatives, and others. However, you are more than welcome to add any proposals of your own that you wish to put to the community.

By the end of September, all the proposals will have been closed by an uninvolved editor, either as a consensus for one of the options or with no consensus. At this point, editors will be invited again to develop these proposals into coherent policy and implement them.

Thank you for your contributions to the good articles project, and I look forward to your input! (in solidarity), JacobTheRox(talk|contributions) 16:02, 11 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

An image created by you has been promoted to featured picture status
Your image, File:Frank J. Hecker launch.jpg, was nominated on Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates, gained a consensus of support, and has been promoted. If you would like to nominate an image, please do so at Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates. Thank you for your contribution! Armbrust The Homunculus 16:36, 14 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

DYK for SS Hydrus (1903)

[edit]

On 21 August 2026, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article SS Hydrus (1903), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that several bodies from the wrecked freighter Hydrus (pictured) were never recovered due to superstitions about touching the dead among the Saugeen people? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/SS Hydrus (1903). You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (SS Hydrus (1903)), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to nominate it.

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, the good article criteria have been amended to add accessibility requirements.
  • Following an RfC, late signatures added to administrator recall petitions after 720 hours from opening are reverted or struck and do not count towards the threshold, even if the petition has not yet been formally closed.
  • The post-May 2026 administrator elections RfCs concluded with consensus for election monitors to curate blatantly inappropriate questions after posting, and to remove or merge true duplicates, clearly marking merged questions. Calls for candidates will include advisory guidance that users with less than one year’s experience or 5,000 edits generally lack a realistic chance of success.

Technical news

  • Interface administrators no longer need to specify the ResourceLoader option in the definitions for gadgets on MediaWiki:Gadgets-definition as gadgets are always loaded through ResourceLoader. (T298199)
  • The list=abusefilters API module now supports formatversion=2 and includes breaking changes to its responses. In particular, the actions property is now a JSON array rather than a string, regardless of the format version. Maintainers of user scripts and other code using this module should check compatibility and update their code as needed. (T435828)

Arbitration

Obituaries

  • Doug Weller passed away on 30 September 2026. Doug Weller began editing Wikipedia in 2006 and became an administrator in 2008, making nearly 275,000 edits over two decades. He served on the Arbitration Committee from 2015 through 2018 and was also a longtime CheckUser and Oversighter.
