History

[edit]

Planning began after the Ontario government approved capital funding in 2020. The OCDSB selected a site at Earl Armstrong Road and Spratt Road for the new 1,516-student facility. Construction was completed in time for a September 2025 opening.

Grade structure (2025–26)

[edit]

For the 2025–26 school year, Riverside South Secondary School opened without Grades 11 and 12.

  • Grade 7, 8, 9, and 10 attend Riverside South Secondary.
  • Students who were previously Grade 9 at Merivale High School (now Grade 10) were transferred to Riverside South.
  • Grades 11 and 12 continue to attend Merivale High School for the 2025–26 year.
  • Exception: IB students in Grade 9 and Grade 10 remain at Merivale High School and do not attend Riverside South for 2025–26.

Full Grade 11 and 12 programming at Riverside South is expected to be phased in during later years.

Campus and facilities

[edit]

The school site spans roughly 19 acres and contains modern learning spaces designed to support English and French immersion, as well as child-care facilities and community-accessible areas.

Academics

[edit]

The school follows the Ontario secondary curriculum and provides standard Grade 7–10 programming during its opening year. Additional senior-level courses will be introduced when Grade 11 and 12 cohorts move into the school.

Extracurriculars and student life

[edit]

Student clubs, athletics, and arts programs are under development as the first cohorts establish the school’s culture, supported by OCDSB extracurricular structures.

Transportation and catchment

[edit]

The school’s attendance boundary was finalized through OCDSB consultation in 2023 and serves students from Riverside South and surrounding neighbourhoods. Senior students in Grades 11–12 continue attending Merivale High School until Riverside South completes its grade rollout.

Controversies and delays

[edit]

Local reporting noted concerns about the long timelines required for new Ottawa high schools, including Riverside South, due to provincial approval and construction processes.
