[edit]Calvillo's most prominent concept (explored in NARRATIVE 1, NARRATIVE 2, and NARRATIVE 3) is the "primacy of narrative" in the artworld.[1] These works, all screen printed canvases, describe the history of the works themselves and attempt to out
Contrast with the institutional theory of art
[edit]Most conceptual artists today[who?] subscribe to some version of the institutional theory of art.[2] Calvillo, however, expresss doubt about definitions of art. Instead, Calvillo takes heavy influence from contemporary aestheticians, especially Noël Carroll, who developed a methodology for identifying art based on historical narratives.[3]
Influence of post-structuralism
[edit]Heavily influenced by both post-structuralist narratology, especially by narrative analysis (which is not concerned with the truth value of narratives),[4] and Barthes' post-structural method of literary analysis as espoused in The Death of the Author.[5][dead link]
