SimplePlanes 2 is a simulation video game developed and published by American indie studio Jundroo LLC. The game is a sequel to the studio's previous release, SimplePlanes, and was released on Steam for macOS and Microsoft Windows on 23 April 2026.

Gameplay

[edit]

SimplePlanes 2 has a very similar interface to its predecessor, but uses a more modern style. The in-flight menu contains more options, which includes options to load a different craft or start a new activity, both during the current flight, and options to restart the flight without reloading the world. Other mechanics have been completely redone to their SimplePlanes equivalent, including wing and lift mechanics, transmission, engines, missiles, painting, and the introduction of a multiplayer system with players now having an avatar in the form of the new character Major Chad who's appearance can be edited by the player.

Development

[edit]

On 26 April 2024, Jundroo announced that SimplePlanes 2 was in production, with a planned release date for 2025.[1] The first devlog was released on 29 May 2025 and focussed on game environments.[2] On 15 September 2025, the release date was pushed back to March 2026, with the mobile release potentially delayed until 2027.[3] On 27 October 2025, a week-long demo was released, which included a read-only editor and limited exploration for players.[4] The Holiday Playtest was released on 15 December, and allowed players to explore a different area of the open-world map.[5] On 11 February the following year, the Early Access release date was pushed back to April.[6] A day later, Demo 3 was released as part of Steam Next Fest, where players could edit properties of parts in the designer, and explore both separate areas of the map.[7] On 14 April, the Early Access release date was announced as 28 April,[8] which would later be brought forward to the 23rd due to S&box also releasing on the 28th.[9]

SimplePlanes 2 was released on 23 April 2026 in version 0.7.0.[10][11]

v0.7.3 added OverLoad XML editing.[12]

v0.7.4 added server descriptions and vote kicking.[13]

v0.7.5 beta introduced an early version of a procedural landing gear system.[14]
