And, some other contributions.
I worked as an engineer, primarily in the area of embedded industrial software. During this career I was granted two patents, for a Vehicle Brake Monitoring System, and for Systems and Methods for Temperature-Compensated Measuring of a Load, respectively. I wrote articles for various publications, some work-related but mostly book and CD reviews, mainly for All About Jazz. I DJ a jazz show, "From Ragtime to No Time," on KEPW/Eugene. Before that, I was an occasional classical music then jazz DJ on KLCC/Eugene, from 1983 until the COVID-19 pandemic. I also play some amateur jazz piano. I enjoy hunting mushrooms in the fall and keying wildflowers in the spring.
I am an avid and eclectic reader, primarily of history both by writers ancient and medieval, and also by contemporary academics; and of fiction, poetry and drama, both in English and in translation. I desultorily maintain a blog summarizing my reading at Homer to Mrabet. More actively, I recently joined the biweekly book sorting group of the Friends of the Eugene Public Library.
For decades in election seasons, I have spent time canvassing and, more recently, also phone banking. I am a Precinct Committee Person in the Democratic Party of Lane County, for District 8 of the Oregon House of Representatives. More or less related to or informed by this involvement, I recently started a Substack, Considerations of Justice.
I have played various musical instruments for almost my entire life. In 1972, I performed a set with my roommate in the Second Annual Willamette Valley Folk Festival as half of the guitar / vocal / harmonica duo Easy Street; one song appeared on an LP of selections from the concert.[1] Currently I am a piano volunteer at PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend. When they furloughed all volunteers as the pandemic gathered strength, I made a few piano videos (with the usual fluffs & rushing) as a practice incentive. You can watch me playing piano at https://www.youtube.com/user/larrykoeni.
In earlier life, I attended Weequahic High School, where among my closest friends were my classmates David Shapiro and Susan Bordo. I enrolled at Columbia University, where among my roommates were Buzz Potamkin and Howard Machtinger, and quit after two years. Later I was awarded degrees in psychology and computer science at the University of Oregon. I worked as a nursery school teacher between those courses of study. I have been married for many years to the fiber artist and educator Marilyn Robert.
