Front Street Theater

In 1957, George Touliatos established Front Street Theater at 1819 Madison Ave in Memphis, Tennessee in the location of the former Idlewild movie theater. The musical director was Irving Evans. Memphis Symphony Orchestra’s Maestro Vincent DeFrank played cello in the pit for some of the musicals. Renowned artists performed there such as Barbara Cason, Dixie Carter, George Hearn, Polly Holliday, Carrie Nye, Rita Gam, Dana Ivey and Jonathan Frid in dramas, comedies, and musicals such as The Boyfriend, Guys and Dolls, Brigadoon, My Fair Lady, The King and I, Oklahoma, Kismet, Yamn Yankees, Gypsy, Sound of Music, and Auntie Mame to name a few.

After about ten years, George Touliatos moved on. Front Street Theater continued for a while as a live theater venue. Eventually, some of the talent moved on to form Playhouse on the Square.
