Biography

Joined Army as Commissioned Officer on 9th Feb 1964 in Rajput Regiment. Total Service in the Army is 32 Years. Shaurya Chakra, Chief of Army Staff‟s and General Officer, Commanding in Chief, Eastern Command Commendation etc. (a) Dy Commander of a Mountain Brigade (192 Mountain Brigade) : Oct 87 to Oct 90 (b) Infantry Battalion (5 Rajput) : 82 – 85 (c) Company Commander & Instructor Class B – IMA Dehradun (d) GSO3 (Ops) HQ Corps. Early life

Hails from a Zaminder family (ROWIL) of East Bengal. In 1947 / 48 during the communal riots, fought with communal terrorists from our home in Dhaka for some time. Outnumbered by force, left everything and migrated to West Bengal. Our home No. 3 Baroda Kinkar Roy Road, Near Midfort Hospital, Dhaka. Father : Late Sourindra Mohan Ray Mother : Late Bela Ray. Prior to joining the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, was in the senior division NCC. Represented State of West Bengal twice for Republic Day Parade in New Delhi. Awarded Governor's Medal for Best NCC Cadet in West Bengal 1962-63 by Smt. Padmaja Naidu. (Image of Medal attached) Joined Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, Premier training institution for service officers gentlemen cadet in India, and was imparted one Year Academic besides military training.

Wife : Mrs. Sakti Ray – Former Check Air Hostess, Indian Airlines. Sons : (a) Shantanu Ray – Masters in Creative Arts in Cinema from University of Woolongong, Australia. Involved in Directing, Writing, Acting of Bollywood Movies – Aa Dekhe Zara, Dil Chahata Hai, Soldier, Had Kardi Apne, Table No. 21, 3G, Alone. Now engaged in Movie making activities in Bollywood. (b) Siddharta Ray – M.Phil, M.A., B.A. Hons., B.Ed., CTET. Teaching in DPS as PGT in Political Science for last 10 years.

Year 1965 Took part in Indo-Pak war as Intelligence Officer of 20th Battalion of the Rajput Regiment (An Infantry Battalion) and undertook offensive operations in Sialkot sector, West Pakistan. Captured Railway Station Alhar (20 KM inside Pak territory) on Sialkot-Narwal-Pashrur-Lahore Railway Line)

Year 1967-69 Moved to Mizo Hills for Counter Insurgency Operations. Successfully undertook many raids, ambushes, cordon and search operations. Was awarded “Shaurya Chakra” by the President of India for gallantry and Exceptional Leadership.

Year 1971-72 General Staff Officer Grade 3 (Operations) of a „Corps in the‟ Western Sector. Involved in planning of operations against the Pakistan Army from Dehra Baba Nanak (DBN) to Bikanir in Rajasthan.

Year 1976-78 During this period, was appointed as Company Commander and Instructor Class B at the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun.

Year 1982-85 Commanded an Infantry Battalion, 5th Battalion of the RAJPUT Regiment. During this period took part in Operation „BLUE STAR‟ and was directly responsible for controlling adverse situation which was created at Ganganagar District of Rajasthan while a major desertion had taken place in one of Infantry Battalion. From 10 June to 25 Sep 84 the Battalion was deployed in area Bagga Purana in Punjab and was responsible for controlling 53 villages including village RODE or Late JS Bhindrenwale, was responsible for planning and maintaining civil military, relations at district level with Deputy Commissioner and Senior Superintendent of Police Involving law and order and Internal Security.

Year 1987-90 Promoted to the rank of Colonel and was appointed as Deputy Brigade Commander of a Mountain Brigade deployed in Arunachal Pradesh Sector. Due to security environment moved the Brigade in Kashmir Sector and got deployed in live operational situation in area Poonch and Srinagar valley, during this Period for Leadership and Exceptional Courage was awarded with Chief of Army Staffs and General Officer Commanding in Chief, Eastern Commands COMMENDATIONS.
