About me

[edit]

I edit mainly in areas related to technology and its history. My interests include consumer electronics, telecommunications, wireless networking, display technologies and older gaming hardware.

I have a particular interest in technologies that have disappeared from everyday use but remain part of the history of modern electronics. Older standards, discontinued hardware and unsuccessful technologies can sometimes be just as interesting as the systems that replaced them.

Most of my contributions are routine maintenance: correcting prose, checking terminology and chronology, improving references, adding useful links and tidying sections that have become difficult to follow.

Editing interests

[edit]

My main areas of interest include:

Editing approach

[edit]

I generally prefer gradual improvement to unnecessary rewriting. If an article already contains useful material, I would rather improve it than replace it.

Typical work includes:

  • correcting grammar, spelling and awkward wording;
  • clarifying technical passages;
  • checking terminology and chronology;
  • improving section organisation;
  • standardising abbreviations;
  • adding appropriate internal links;
  • improving citation formatting;
  • checking older and dead links;
  • correcting inconsistent technical descriptions;
  • adding relevant categories where appropriate.

When working on technical articles, I try to make the material easier to follow without removing the detail needed to explain the subject properly.

Areas of particular interest

[edit]

Consumer electronics

[edit]

I am interested in the development of consumer hardware and the technologies behind familiar electronic devices. This includes older systems, discontinued products, technical standards and hardware that influenced later generations of equipment.

Wireless and telecommunications

[edit]

My telecommunications interests include the development of wireless communication from earlier radio systems through cellular networks and modern wireless networking.

Subjects I often read about include mobile telephone systems, cellular standards, radio-frequency allocation, wireless data transmission, network hardware and the development of IEEE 802.11.

Display technology

[edit]

Display technology is another area of interest. I am particularly interested in the historical development of CRT, LCD, plasma, electroluminescent and OLED displays.

I also find discontinued and commercially unsuccessful display systems useful from a historical point of view, particularly where they influenced later technologies.

Gaming hardware

[edit]

My interest in gaming is mainly historical and technical. This includes arcade machines, arcade cabinet construction, controllers, display hardware, older consoles and discontinued gaming platforms.

I am also interested in preserving technical information about hardware that is becoming harder to document from contemporary sources.

Technical history

[edit]

Many modern devices depend on standards and engineering work developed over several decades. I enjoy working on articles that document those earlier systems, particularly where terminology, chronology or sourcing has become dated.

Maintenance work

[edit]

Older technical articles often benefit from relatively small improvements.

The maintenance work I usually concentrate on includes:

  • resolving inconsistent terminology;
  • correcting outdated descriptions;
  • improving poorly formatted references;
  • checking dead or ageing links;
  • clarifying introductory definitions;
  • reorganising short sections;
  • correcting chronology;
  • improving internal navigation;
  • identifying unsupported technical claims;
  • adding useful historical context from reliable sources.

Sources

[edit]

For technical and historical subjects, I generally prefer sources that are appropriate to the claim being made.

These may include:

  • engineering publications;
  • academic journals;
  • standards organisations;
  • university publications;
  • established technology publications;
  • contemporary newspaper and magazine coverage;
  • archived documentation;
  • manufacturer documentation for straightforward technical specifications.

I try to distinguish between sources used for technical specifications and independent sources used for broader historical context.

Editing principles

[edit]

I aim to keep contributions:

  • neutral in tone;
  • verifiable;
  • proportionate to the subject;
  • consistent with surrounding article style;
  • properly attributed where necessary;
  • understandable to non-specialist readers.

I prefer incremental improvements that preserve useful existing material and sources.
