The Convenience Store (Japanese: 夜勤事件) is a 2026 Japanese horror film screenplayed by Yoshimasa Akamatsu and directed by Jirô Nagae.[2] The film is based on the independent video game of the same name by developer Chilla's Art.[3] It stars Kotona Minami, Takeo Gozu, Tetta Seki, Terunosuke Takezai, Shunsuke Tanaka, Natsuki Kato, Mai Tezuka.[4]
Plot
[edit]A family gets murdered and the killer himself takes his own life by jumping off the bridge.
One night, Yukino Tazuru goes to the convenience store where she works the night shift. Upon arriving, Yukino's coworker, Takuya Funabashi, tells her that their missing manager, Tsurukawa, is being replaced soon. The following night, policemen named Shinji Saruwatari and Kazuki Kondo arrive at the convenience store after Yukino discovers her Tsurukawa's dead body. Interrogated by Saruwatari, Yukino looks at the clock and gives him an SD card, saying she received it four days ago.
In a flashback, Yukino was about to dispose expired food when she met a man named Yukio Matsuura who asked for the garbage and he immediately left. While Yukino was restocking the shelves, a delivery man came and gave her a package containing the SD card. Yukino reveals that that a total of four SD cards were delivered to her.
- Yukino's First Night
Funabashi ordered Yukino to spray at the rats at the back of the store. While spraying, Yukino saw a black car with the driver, a woman, angrily looking at her before driving away. Back in the store, an elderly woman showed up looking for someone named Ken and said that the convenience store was her daughter's house. On the CCTV footage on the office desktop, Yukino saw a child standing outside the store's front door, but when she investigated, she only saw a box addressed to her.
- Second Night
Yukino told Funabashi that the SD cards contain creepy videos. While Yukino was looking at the broken air conditioner, a repairman named Hamada came to repair it. While Yukino herself was working in the storage room, the door suddenly couldn't open. Asking for help outside, she was scared by a black-dressed woman walking fast and she heard Hamada screaming. In the dark storage room, Yukino saw the child and asked if he is Ken, but the child was accompanied by the ghost woman and Yukino managed to free herself. A female customer named Tamayo Shono was outside the door, having heard Yukino's screams for help, and gave her a luck charm. Going to the office, Yukino found another package.
Interrupting the interrogation, Kondo asks how is Yukino is doing. Saruwatari reveals to Kondo that the convenience store is haunted.
- Third Night
Yukino had a video call with her mother before going to work. At one in the morning, the doorbell kept ringing and when Yukino looked, the lights in her apartment flickered on and off and she saw the ghost woman under her bed. Yukino stepped back in fear and found another package.
- Fourth Night
Yukino looked for Funabashi and she timed in for her shift. After looking at the CCTV footage, Yukino stepped out of the office to see that all the food on the shelves had been replaced with LCD TVs. She panicked and tried to escape, but the ghost woman stood in her way and turned Yukino's charm to dust. Entering the storage room, Yukino saw Tsurukawa, dead and his eyes gouged out.
Yukino tells Saruwatari that she became unconscious and immediately called the police when she came to. Saruwatari notices that Yukino always looks at the time. Yukino asks to check the remaining contents of the SD card and says the location of the last video is her house.
- Shinji's First Night
Kondo reports to Saruwatari all the information of the SD cards that Yukino has provided, saying there is no film that matches to the clips on the SD cards. Saruwatari's wife, Kaho, visits him to give him his lunch and shows him the ultrasound of their baby. Stressed out by the case of the convenience store, Saruwatari also begins experiencing supernatural events.
- The Second Night
While in the office, Saruwatari is surprised to see a boy under his table. The old woman, Kazuko, comes to the office looking for Ken and when Saruwatari looks under the table, the child is gone. Looking at the files of a man named Masaharu Onodera, Saruwatari learns that Onodera murdered his family and recorded the crime on a video camera and saved the footage on the four SD cards before dying by suicide. Looking at the photos of the victims, Saruwatari is shocked to see that the boy in the pictures looks just like the one he had seen under his table.
Onodera's wife and son have been the ghosts haunting the convenience store where their house once stood.
- The Third Night
Saruwatari reviews the videos on the SD cards when he suddenly sees himself. He goes to the door to check who is filming him when Kondo opens the other door. In his office, the door suddenly opens and Saruwatari sees the ghost woman Yukino had seen and he wakes up.
- The Fourth Night
Saruwatari reviews the CCTV footage, and returns to the convenience store where he finds Ken and long rusted metal nails which frighten the ghost woman as her husband killed her with them. He encounters Tamayo who tries to give him a charm, but he rejects it. He directly goes to the hospital to see Funabashi and angrily asks what he saw before the body of Tsurukawa was recovered. Funabashi answers that he had seeb and talked to the woman in the black car-Noriko Hosoe. She was asking about the strange smell in the convenience store.
Funabashi revealed that Noriko was having an affair with Tsurukawa and he saw them went to the basement multiple times. He also revealed that Tsurukawa was obsessed with Yukino but he mistook Hamada for a stalker and attacked him with a crowbar. Funabashi also saw Yukino unconscious outside the store and when he woke her up, he was attacked by Matsuura.
Driving back to the convenience store, Saruwatari thinks that all who watch the cursed videos die, but Yukino and his team are still alive. When he enters the store, the food on the shelves have been replaced with LCD TVs and rusted metal nails are scattered across the floor. Watching the CCTV in the storage room, Saruwatari sees Yukino and Matsuura talking. Matsuura revealed that the videos on the SD card are cursed and the only way to escape is to copy the videos on other SD cards and show the clips to someone else within four days. Saruwatari is horrified to discover that he had unknowingly showed the cursed videos to Kaho who had watched them beyond four days, meaning she and their unborn baby are the next to die.
Yukino stands in the street when she sees and picks up a metal nail and realizes Tsurukawa had also fallen victim to the curse.
During the end credits, Noriko sees the ghost woman and runs away in fear.

Production
[edit]The film was produced under a production committee system which included Chilla’s Art, original creators of the horror game the movie adapts, contributing the story and creative direction.[7] Canter, distributor and co-producer, likely involved in funding and logistics and NBCUniversal Entertainment Japan, helped with production support and possibly marketing/home video distribution.[8] The film's theme song, titled Night Shift Incident, was performed by Liza.[9]
Filming
[edit]The movie was shot primarily in practical sets replicating a convenience store, including both a full-scale interior set and on-location shots. Cinematography was done by Masayuki Nakazawa, focusing on tight, claustrophobic framing. Director Jirō Nagae aimed for a realistic but unsettling style and the production uses practical effects for jump scares and supernatural elements, rather than relying heavily on CGI.[10]
Release
[edit]The film was first screened at Human Trust Cinema Shibuya on January 28, 2026,[9] and was released nationwide on February 20, 2026, under Canter[11] and NBCUniversal Entertainment Japan.[12][13][14]
Differences from original game
[edit]To adapt The Convenience Store, the original plot had been expanded and minor details had been altered.
In the original game, the main protagonist was originally unnamed and the plot was shown from her point of view; in the film, she is named Yukino. The cursed video clips were originally on VHS tapes which were replaced with SD cards. Depending on the player's decision, watching or throwing away the last video clip gets the protagonist killed; returning the video to the sender results in the protagonist surviving her ordeal, quitting her job, and learning of the murder-suicide on the internet.
The policemen, Kaho Saruwatari and Tamayo Shono, are new characters added to expand the original plot which depicts the murder-suicide clips cursed like the one from The Ring.[citation needed]
