Reserving this name

[edit]

I'm temporarily reserving this name. I'm thinking about the half a million or so articles that use shortened footnotes, and what will happen to them when sub-referencing comes online and is supported by the visual editor. It's likely that after visual editors make a number of changes, the shortened footnote format will be damaged (this is already happening everywhere).

Editors may want to convert articles using template {{sfn}} to sub referencing if this is becoming the defacto standard. I'm planning on implementing a template that makes this easier -- a simple "replace all" {{sfn}} -> {{srf}}. Three-letter template names tend to get used, so I just wanted to reserve the name until we know exactly how this will work. ---- CharlesTGillingham (talk) 14:24, 9 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Template names should be self-explanatory, if possible. "srf" doesn't explain anything. At most, this should be a redirect to a template with a helpful name. – Jonesey95 (talk) 15:51, 9 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
@CharlesTGillingham: any objection to a temporary redirect to {{sfn}}? Ansgar Slopsbane (talk) 13:05, 14 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
I suspect that the creator would want to redirect to {{Sub-reference}}. Without code or documentation, it is not possible to know. – Jonesey95 (talk) 17:43, 15 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
