Source: La un început de octombrie, trăindu-şi într-o cameră de spital ultimele zile, Mazilu i-a dat fratelui său Ion următoarea grabnică însărcinare: să meargă pe Lipscani şi să-i cumpere o pălărie ca lumea. A scos 300 de lei (dispunea, în sfârşit, de bani, destui bani) şi i-a explicat mesagerului de încredere (care asculta atent şi liniştit, având grandoarea - ar fi spus Mazilu - grandoarea şi nu nenorocitul de «tact», de a nu se mira) ce fel de pălărie comandă el, moale, de culoare închisă și mai ales cu boruri suficient de largi. Nu te uita la preț, i-a zis, nu fac economii, n-o să mă apuc acum să pun bani la ciorap, te rog pe tine să mi-o cumperi, pentru că eu momentan nu mă simt în puteri. «Mi-a plăcut - a spus după plecarea fratelui că a înţeles repede, n-a făcut (cum îmi era puţin frică) ochii mari, n-a întrebat de două ori ce vreau; mă luasem cu viaţa, cu scrisul, neglijam tocmai problema pălăriei, deşi ştiam ce importanţă este...» -- Lucian Raicu, as quoted in Nicolae Manolescu, "Cronica literară.
