Please consider adding the following passage to the "Psychological study" subsection, after the existing paragraph describing Murray's study:
Murray's study has been widely reported as connected to Project MK-Ultra, the CIA's Cold War-era program researching behavioral modification and mind control. Before his Harvard work, Murray had served with the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the wartime precursor to the CIA, where he trained operatives to withstand hostile interrogation—experience some researchers believe he later carried over into his study of undergraduates. Reporting also indicates Murray's research may have been funded through MK-Ultra channels. AsparagusMunch (talk) 11:50, 21 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Wikipedia's own article on Henry Murray, which documents his wartime service with the OSS (the CIA's precursor) and his subsequent psychological research: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Murray
I'd suggest Chase's Atlantic piece and book are the strongest sources here — they're the original in-depth investigative work most later reporting on this topic draws from. Happy to adjust the wording of the proposed text if there are concerns about how closely it should hew to what these sources state. AsparagusMunch (talk) 10:45, 22 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. We can't cite wikipeida in a wikipedia article, per WP:CIRCULAR. Can you provide specific citations for which of these claims come from which source (and page numbers to the book citations) meamemg (talk) 15:17, 22 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

After reading more thoroughly, I recognize the sources I previously provided could reasonably be seen as speculative on their own. That said, I believe they still support the idea that there are credible indicators pointing toward a possible connection between Murray's study and MK-Ultra — not a confirmed one, but a plausible one worth noting in the article with appropriate hedging.
The core issue is that the CIA destroyed the vast majority of MK-Ultra records in 1973, which means this connection can likely never be definitively confirmed or ruled out either way. Given that documentary gap, I'd propose the text lean on "possible ties" language rather than asserting a confirmed link, which I think is both accurate and appropriately cautious:
Murray's study has been reported by multiple sources as possibly connected to Project MK-Ultra, the CIA's Cold War-era program researching behavioral modification. Murray had previously served with the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the wartime precursor to the CIA, where he worked on developing interrogation-resistance assessments. Because the CIA destroyed the majority of MK-Ultra's records in 1973, it has never been possible to definitively confirm or rule out a direct funding link between the agency and Murray's specific Harvard study.
Supporting this: The Week ("MKUltra: Inside the CIA's Cold War Mind Control Experiments," 2017) reports Murray as having been secretly employed by the CIA, and separately quotes Kaczynski's own brother, David Kaczynski, stating that due to the records' destruction, it may never be known for certain whether the Murray study was officially part of MK-Ultra. https://theweek.com/86961/mkultra-inside-the-cias-cold-war-mind-control-experiments
Regarding page numbers for Chase's Harvard and the Unabomber (W.W. Norton, 2003): pp. 251–280 cover CIA funding of psychological research more broadly during that era, and p. 291 is where Chase discusses the study's effect on Kaczynski. I'll note these are cited via a secondary discussion of the book rather than something I've personally verified against the text, so treat them as a starting point for anyone checking the primary source rather than a settled citation.
Lastly, I'd note that Wikipedia does allow coverage of claims that aren't fully confirmed, provided they're attributed to reliable sources and clearly phrased as unconfirmed rather than stated as settled fact (per WP:V and WP:NPOV's due-weight provisions on significant, sourced viewpoints). I don't think this falls into the category of baseless speculation — there's a real timeline and set of documented facts (Murray's OSS/CIA background, the active MK-Ultra program during this exact period, the destroyed-records gap) that make the possibility a reasonable one to note. I just can't point to a document that confirms it outright, which is why I'm proposing "possible ties" phrasing rather than a definitive claim.
Im not an native english speaker but over the years i have taught myself to not only speak but also write in english. But due to it not being my native language, my grammar tends ho have issues. So to make sure i dont post and edit request with big grammatical misstakes i use an LLM to correct my grammar and spelling. I use claude for this as i find it to be a very capable LLM. If using a LLM model for corrections is against wikipedias ToS i do apologise. AsparagusMunch (talk) 07:54, 23 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

It's my understanding that the pronunciation guide for his last name at the start of this Wikipedia article was how the USA media pronounced his name. But it clearly looks like a Polish last name and he had a Polish American father, so I'd assume that Ted himself (and his family and such) to have pronounced it the Polish way. Do we know if he personally went by the Polish pronunciation or the likely-Anglicized pronunciation the media used? (I'm aware that he may have grown up already using the Anglicized version since it doesn't require news media for that to happen.) I'm just wondering which is the one he himself used. ~2026-43574-39 (talk) 03:38, 22 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

The following writing in his educational section is transphobic and makes no sense in the section. It cited the same source twice, however the abstract it's citing is about schizophrenia and not about gender dysphoria. If this was used in the criminal trial, move it there with the reason for its inclusion. If not, please remove, because it appears to be hate speech:
For a period of several weeks in 1966, Kaczynski experienced intense sexual fantasies of being female and decided to undergo gender transition. He arranged to meet with a psychiatrist but changed his mind in the waiting room and discussed other things instead, without disclosing his original reason for making the appointment. Afterward, enraged, he considered killing the psychiatrist and other people whom he hated. Kaczynski described this episode as a "major turning point" in his life.[1][2] He recalled: "I felt disgusted about what my uncontrolled sexual cravings had almost led me to do. And I felt humiliated, and I violently hated the psychiatrist. Just then there came a major turning point in my life. Like a phoenix, I burst from the ashes of my despair to a glorious new hope." ~2026-55159-72 (talk) 21:22, 12 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
If you have issue with the sources or the factuality of the information put forward - then this deserves editing. However there is nothing in the writing that is transphobic if it is factually correct. Thnift (talk) 03:30, 16 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
