Reviewer: Grnrchst (talk · contribs) 12:15, 5 August 2026 (UTC)
I'll be taking this on for review, as part of the Developing Countries WikiContest and as part of my pledge for the review at Talk:Dora Brilliant/GA1. --Grnrchst (talk) 12:15, 5 August 2026 (UTC)
- @Grnrchst: Thank you very much for the thorough review and constructive feedback. I've gone through the article and made the requested changes. When you have a chance, I'd appreciate it if you could take another look. If you notice anything else that could be improved, please let me know. Abu Isa 🇴🇲 14:14, 6 August 2026 (UTC)
- @Abu Isa: Hello! Thanks for seeing to all this so promptly and thoroughly. The article is looking to be in much better shape now. I have a few more comments about the "Member of the Majilis al-Shura (2011-2013)", "Arrest" and "Release" sections, as well as the new "Later career" section. Once these are addressed, I think that should bring the article in line with GA criteria. I've also made some minor changes to the article, so feel free to check those to make sure they're all okay. --Grnrchst (talk) 16:41, 6 August 2026 (UTC)
- @Grnrchst: Thank you very much for the kind words and for taking the time to review the article so thoroughly! The changes are all great and thanks for helping. I've now addressed the remaining comments so please let me know if there's anything else you'd like me to fix. Abu Isa 🇴🇲 17:19, 6 August 2026 (UTC)

Comments
[edit]- Earwig's copyright violation detector flags multiple cases of copying from sources. Much of the "Member of the Majilis al-Shura (2011-2013)" and "Protest and arrest" sections are copied word for word from the UN report, with other cases of copying from other sources, beyond what's to be expected from attributed quotes. The article needs to be rewritten or it will fail on criteria 2d.
- I've rewritten the sections identified by Earwig to eliminate close paraphrasing and ensure the article reflects the sources in my own words. After the revisions, the Earwig similarity score decreased from some 61% to 47%. Most of the remaining matches appear to consist of properly attributed quotations, like the Alkarama speech here, as well as short phrases like "member of the Consultative Assembly", "Alkarama award", "released on bail" etc. and common factual words that are difficult to express differently without altering the meaning. If there are any specific passages that you still consider too close to the source, I'd be happy to fix them. Abu Isa 🇴🇲 14:14, 6 August 2026 (UTC)
- This is much better now, thank you for seeing to this. --Grnrchst (talk) 16:33, 6 August 2026 (UTC)

- The article inconsistently refers to the "Majlis A’Shura", "Shura Council" and "Consultative Assembly"; this should be standardised to one form.
Lead and infobox
[edit]- This first sentence is an incredibly long run-on sentence. Strongly suggest breaking it up.
- Per the Manual of Style on lead sections, there doesn't need to be citations in the lead for information that is already cited in the article body.
"Al Mamari received widespread attention [...]"
This is another incredibly long run-on sentence.
- You uploaded this portrait of Al Mamari claiming it as your own work. Is this true? Are you an official photographer for the Shura Council? Do you have the right to release this photograph as your own work?
- No, and that was my mistake. When I originally uploaded the image, I didn't fully understand Commons licensing and copyright requirements. I've since replaced it with a photo that I personally took. Thanks for pointing this out. Abu Isa 🇴🇲 14:14, 6 August 2026 (UTC)
Early life
[edit]- Link to Liwa, Oman and Provinces of Oman.
"in the Al Batinah North Governorate"
Specify that this is in Oman.
- Do we have any information about his childhood and/or education? Jumping immediately from his birth to his teaching jobs leaves a bit of a contextual gap.
- Fixed, added his education and doctorate. Abu Isa 🇴🇲 14:14, 6 August 2026 (UTC)
"serving as head of the Arabic Language Department at Sohar University for 12 years"
When?
- Unfortunately, the source only states that Al Mamari served as head of the Arabic Language Department at Sohar University for 12 years and does not specify the dates. Since I could not verify the timeframe from a reliable source, I have left it as stated in the source rather than speculate. Abu Isa 🇴🇲 14:14, 6 August 2026 (UTC)
- Spotcheck: [3] Verified on page 2.
- WorldCourts citation should include the date of publication (11 February 2015), author (United Nations Human Rights Council), publisher (United Nations General Assembly) and an access-date; WorldCourts should also be included in a via= field, as it is a database, not the original publisher. It should also follow cite report formatting.
- Elaph citation should link to Elaph and should include the publication date (4 May 2016) and author (Yousef bin Ahmed Al Balooshi).
"He was then detained in Sohar during the Arab Spring protests in early 2011"
Cut the "then" for concision.
"He was eventually released without any conviction"
If we're not going to give a clearer timeline, then I think we could cut "eventually".
- Might be worth linking to the specific article on the 2011 Omani protests rather than the one about the wider Arab Spring.
- Link to 2011 Omani general election and Consultative Assembly (Oman).
- This last paragraph could probably be moved into the subsequent section, as it's better covered by the scope of that section.
- I'm not sure what happened to the Gulf News citation, but I think you can trim all the stuff after the colon. You should also link to Gulf News.
- Spotcheck: [7][3] Verified.
- This last paragraph appears to be copying the Gulf News source almost word for word.
- Fixed this. Abu Isa 🇴🇲 14:14, 6 August 2026 (UTC)
Member of the Majilis al-Shura (2011-2013)
[edit]"Al Mamari was elected as a member of the Shura Council following parliamentary reform in Oman that took place in 2011"
This is all duplicated information, already mentioned in the last paragraph of the previous section.
- Fixed this, removed the last paragraph in "early life" and put it here. Abu Isa 🇴🇲 14:14, 6 August 2026 (UTC)
"He had been a vocal advocate against environmental damage and pollution in Liwa, and had staunchly defended his province's interest in the parliament"
The use of "had" implies he advocated for this before his entry into the Consultative Assembly, which is apparently grammatically incorrect.
- Fixed this. Abu Isa 🇴🇲 14:14, 6 August 2026 (UTC)
- I will note that this section appears to be either very closely paraphrasing or outright copying the UN report word for word. This is unacceptable at GA level.
- Committee on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians citation should cite the publisher (Inter-Parliamentary Union) and publication date (30 November 2015) and should include an access-date. It should also use cite report formatting.
- Spotcheck: [8] Verified.
"Al Mamari was allegedly beaten, [...]"
Who is alleging this?
- Done, gave the source Abu Isa 🇴🇲 14:14, 6 August 2026 (UTC)
"Protests developed in Sohar and Liwa"
"Developed" is an odd word to use for protests.
- Remove the duplicate links to Sohar and Liwa.
- This last paragraph is an incredibly long run-on sentence, which makes it hard to read. Please break this up and rewrite it so it's more easily understandable. It would help if the events described followed a chronological order, rather than jumping back and forth in time. It's also unclear when any of this is happening.
- Citation to Marc Valeri should include a publication date (2015) and credit the journal (Arabian Humanities) and its issue number (4). It should also follow cite journal formatting.
- Spotcheck: [9] Verified.
"A vocal advocate against environmental damage and pollution in Liwa, he became a vocal advocate against environmental pollution in Liwa during his tenure"
This sentence says the same thing twice.
- Fixed. Don't know how i missed that lol. Abu Isa 🇴🇲 17:19, 6 August 2026 (UTC)
"As a member of the Consultative Assembly, Al Mamari emerged as one of its most outspoken members"
Again, this is a bit repetitive, it could say "Al Mamari emerged as one of the Assembly's most outspoken members" or something similar.
"following the expansion of the chamber's legislative powers under Sultan Qaboos's 2011 royal decree"
Is this royal decree the same thing as the parliamentary reform? Or are they different things? If they're the same, it might be worth moving this detail to the beginning of the section, to better explain what the parliamentary reform involved.
- Move link to Qaboos here, as this is now the first time he's being mentioned in the article body.
"The Council"
Link to Council of Oman to clarify what this is referring to.
- It was referring to the Consultative Assembly, or the Shura council, which i fixed and changed to "Assembly" rather than "Council", which is the literal arabic translation of Majilis. Abu Isa 🇴🇲 17:19, 6 August 2026 (UTC)
Protest
[edit]"On August 22, 2013"
This should be standardised to DMY formatting, per the rest of the article and the Manual of Style on dates.
"told Times of Oman"
this should say "told the Times of Oman", with the publication name in italics, per the Manual of Style on names and titles.
- Removed the times of Oman reference. Abu Isa 🇴🇲 14:14, 6 August 2026 (UTC)
"Eyewitnesses told Times of Oman that the demonstrators, both men and women, wearing traditional Omani clothes, protested carrying placards demanding cleaner air and calling attention to industrial pollution"
This entire sentence could be cut, as it's not directly related to Talib's biography, and is mostly just re-stating information from the previous sentence.
- This Times of Oman citation is malformed. The publication name should be in its own field, not included in the title field, and the author (Rejimon K) should be credited.
- Removed the times of Oman reference. Abu Isa 🇴🇲 14:14, 6 August 2026 (UTC)
"Despite the demonstration being purely peaceful, with video footage provided by the Chairman of the Shura Council showing a group of some 100 individuals marching peacefully, numerous security force agents fired tear gas and used a water cannon to disperse the crowd, resulting in injuries to many individuals, including to Al Mamari."
This sentence should be trimmed down for concision. For example, this could be rewritten as "Security forces fired tear gas and used a water cannon to disperse the peaceful demonstrators, injuring many, including Al Mamari".
- You uploaded this photograph as your own work. Is this true? Did you take this photograph yourself in 2013?
- Yes. Abu Isa 🇴🇲 14:14, 6 August 2026 (UTC)
- Great, thanks for confirming. --Grnrchst (talk) 16:00, 6 August 2026 (UTC)
- Yes. Abu Isa 🇴🇲 14:14, 6 August 2026 (UTC)
Arrest
[edit]- Remove the duplicate link to the Consultative Assembly.
"it is alleged that the house"
Who is alleging this?
- Fixed this and added the source. Abu Isa 🇴🇲 14:14, 6 August 2026 (UTC)
"police officers then entered the house and arrested him and was charged"
Should say "police officers then entered the house and arrested him. He was charged"
- Why are the "Trial" and "International reaction" parts subsections of the "Arrest" section? It seems like they should also be third-level subsections of the "Protest and arrest" section.
"Al Mamari is reported to have met with members of the Consultative Assembly"
Is there any doubt that he met with them? If there is, then it's worth saying who/what is reporting this. If not, then I think you can just say "Al Mamari met with members of the Consultative Assembly".
Trial
[edit]"Arrested and placed in detention, he was held in solitary confinement"
This is repeating the same information three times. Trim it down to just say "He was placed in solitary confinement" or something similar.
"His brother Captain Murad Al Maamari stated: "Last Friday, my brother had access to his lawyer for the first time since his detention 14 days ago,”"
We're not saying when he stated this, so the "Last Friday" and "14 days ago" are completely ambiguous.
- Removed this. Abu Isa 🇴🇲 14:14, 6 August 2026 (UTC)
"Dr. Al Mamari"
He's a doctor now? This hasn't been mentioned anywhere else in the article.
- Added his doctorate before, but cut this sentence because of honorifics. Abu Isa 🇴🇲 14:14, 6 August 2026 (UTC)
"Rearrested later that same day on accusations that he was responsible"
Who was rearrested? Al Mamari? When was he released?
- Fixed this. Abu Isa 🇴🇲 14:14, 6 August 2026 (UTC)
"presented by the Chairman of the Majlis A’Shura to the Committee"
What Committee?
- Removed this alltogeter. Abu Isa 🇴🇲 14:14, 6 August 2026 (UTC)
"presumably linked to the previous protests"
The video was linked to the protests, or his speech?
- Removed this alltogeter. Abu Isa 🇴🇲 14:14, 6 August 2026 (UTC)
- Link to Friday prayer.
"“If the government policy towards citizens does not change in the coming five years, there will be a storm”"
Why is this quote in italics? Per the Manual of Style on text formatting, quotations should not use italics.
- Removed this. Abu Isa 🇴🇲 14:14, 6 August 2026 (UTC)
- Citation to Alkarama should provide a publication date (6 May 2016), should remove the publication name from the title field and should link to Alkarama.
- As before, everything after the colon should be removed; just "Gulf News" is sufficient.
- Spotcheck: [2][13] Couldn't find either of the quotes in the Alkarama source; citations should be inline with the specific information they're verifying.
- Fixed this. Abu Isa 🇴🇲 14:14, 6 August 2026 (UTC)
"Initially found guilty"
The "initially" here implies his conviction was later overturned, which does not appear to have been the case.
- Fixed this. Abu Isa 🇴🇲 14:14, 6 August 2026 (UTC)
"October 10, 2013"
;"October 11, 2013"
;"December 16, 2013"
;"May 7, 2014"
again, these should all use DMY formatting.
"1,000 riyals"
This should be spelt "rial", should link to Omani rial and should provide a currency conversion.
"After being freed on bond"
Freed on bond? What does that mean?
- Fixed this, changed it to "released on bail". Abu Isa 🇴🇲 14:14, 6 August 2026 (UTC)
"Mr Al Mamari,"
Just Al Mamari. Per the Manual of Style on surnames, we don't use honorific prefixes like "Mr."
"After several retrials"
This is another rather long run-on sentence. Please consider breaking it up.
- Link to OCHRD Oman source is dead, so an archived url should be provided; removed "admin" as it's a generic author name. It may also be helpful to use the NGO's full name, The Omani Center for Human Rights & Democracy.
- Per the Manual of Style on paragraphs,
"single-sentence paragraphs can inhibit the flow of the text"
. These should be merged with other paragraphs, in order to aid readability.
International reaction
[edit]"All of this"
Be more specific. What exactly prompted these reactions?
- Fixed this. Abu Isa 🇴🇲 14:14, 6 August 2026 (UTC)
- The Europe Solidaire citation is a mirror of the original Amnesty International press release. Suggest citing that directly.
- Another malformed citation for Human Rights Watch, where the publication is listed as "Share this via Facebook"...
- Fixed this. Abu Isa 🇴🇲 14:14, 6 August 2026 (UTC)
"A United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (UNGAD) opinion was made (Al Mamari v. Oman, No. 53/2014), concluding [...]"
I think this could be condensed to say "In December 2014, the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (UNGAD) concluded [...]"
- Again, per the Manual of Style on paragraphs, single-sentence paragraphs should be merged with other paragraphs.
- Spotcheck: [17] I was unable to verifiy that his detention violated
"Articles 19 and 21 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights"
or that"the Omani authorities did not comply with the request of the WGAD to release Al Mamari and he remained in custody."
in this cited source.
- Fixed this and changed the source. Abu Isa 🇴🇲 14:14, 6 August 2026 (UTC)
Release
[edit]This is an incredibly short, single-sentence section. Per the Manual of Style on layout, "short paragraphs and single sentences generally do not warrant their own subheadings"
. This could easily be merged into the preceding section.
- Per the Manual of Style on date formatting,
"4th of May, 2016"
is an unacceptable date format and should be rewritten as "4 May 2016".
- Spotcheck: [2] Verified.
- What has Al Mamari done since his release from prison? There's been 10 years between his release and today, surely his life and activities must have received some coverage since then?
- Fixed this, added "Later career section". Abu Isa 🇴🇲 14:14, 6 August 2026 (UTC)
- I think this single sentence about his release could be merged in with the new "Later career" section, so it's not another single-sentence section.
Later career
[edit]"through a post on X (formerly Twitter),"
If this was in March 2022, then it was actually still called Twitter at the time.
- Yep, fixed this. Abu Isa 🇴🇲 17:19, 6 August 2026 (UTC)
- The citations in this section were malformed, as transliterations are supposed to be used in author and website fields, so the template broke down a bit. I've fixed the issue (see here), but it'd be worth adding a trans-title field to each of these with English translations of the article titles; I'll leave that to you, as I'm not familiar enough with Arabic to do so.
- Thanks for helping! added the translations Abu Isa 🇴🇲 17:19, 6 August 2026 (UTC)
- @Abu Isa: Just noticed this also applies to other Arabic-language citations in the article. Once title translations are added to the rest, I'll be happy to pass this review. --Grnrchst (talk) 17:51, 6 August 2026 (UTC)
- Done! Thank you very much for reviewing and for all of your feedback. Abu Isa 🇴🇲 18:06, 6 August 2026 (UTC)
"In 2023, Al Mamari stated on X"
Ok, here's where "X (formerly Twitter)" would be correct, as the brand had changed by this point.
- Again, single-sentence paragraphs should be merged together, otherwise it breaks up the flow of reading.
Awards
[edit]- Again, per the Manual of Style on date formatting,
"8th of December, 2015"
is an unacceptable date format and should be rewritten as "8 December 2015".
"Alkarama, a Geneva-based human rights organisation's"
Oddly worded. Should be rewritten as "Geneva-based human rights organisation Alkarama's".
"his significant work defending human rights in the country"
Is this according to Alkarama or are we saying this in wikivoice?
- Removed this alltogether. Abu Isa 🇴🇲 14:14, 6 August 2026 (UTC)
- Link to Mourad Dhina.
- Again, quotes should not be in italics.
- This section arguably engages in a bit of puffery; I'd suggest trimming it down a bit, especially condensing some of the quotes, so it's not giving excessive weight to this one award. The condensed version could even be integrated as a sentence or two in the "International reaction" section.

- This article needs a lot of work before it meets GA criteria. Were this not the user's first nomination, I probably would have marked this as an immediate fail on prose and verifiability, but given the circumstances, I'm happy to give time for the issues with the article to be addressed. Feel free to ping me once my comments have all been addressed and/or if you have any questions, and I'll give this another look over. --Grnrchst (talk) 12:15, 5 August 2026 (UTC)
- The nominator has really put in the work on this one, addressing all of my issues, which brought it in line with GA criteria. I'm now more than happy to pass this. @Abu Isa: Excellent work on this article and congratulations on your first GA! I learnt a lot from reading and reviewing this, and am delighted to have learnt about Al Mamari. --Grnrchst (talk) 18:17, 6 August 2026 (UTC)

Overall:
Improved to GA on 6 August, nominated on 8 August. That's cool. Hook is interesting and indeed sourced to linked article. Well-worded and very attractive to readers interested in knowing why warrants environmental activism, formerly seen as a flamboyant interest, a proceeding of prosecution and imprisonment by a state. The article could have more references, but that would be harsh to demand given that coverage for these "common civilians" that have articles on Wikipedia is almost in all cases scarce. The sources given are decent and robust. Only to ask Abu Isa if you can provide at least one other source or two to the section about the award(s) so we avoid any strict editor to tag it as a single source (the section). Also, would you like to include the article's picture in this nomination? And lastly, I made two small edits to the article (dates template and video language). See below.
Edit after inserting tick: Abu Isa please trim the awards entrance to lower the "yellow" on Earwig (48%). Thanks. CoryGlee 00:20, 13 August 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks for reviewing this, CoryGlee. I’ve added two new sources to the awards section and trimmed it to reduce the copyvio percentage which is now at 45%. I’ve also added the article’s picture in the nomination. I appreciate the two small edits you made as well, and thanks again for reviewing the nomination. One quick question: when you mentioned trimming the “awards entry,” did you mean to include the quote as well, or were you referring to the above text? I’ve kept the quote for now, but I’m happy to remove it if you wanted it to be included. Abu Isa 🇴🇲 19:53, 13 August 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks for your work Abu Isa, however, I am afraid that 45% still stands in a yellow line. Anyway I am pinging all users seeing this, especially experimented DYK admins, to please clarify if a lengthy quote helping a lot to increasing the copyvio percentage must be trimmed too/copyedited to lower that number. If that's given a green light, I will ad a green icon, Abu. If not then I'll ask you to rephrase or make it into prose. I'll be watching this. :-) CoryGlee 17:00, 14 August 2026 (UTC)
- @CoryGlee: Speaking as the GA reviewer, I think you're being a bit too strict about the colour of an Earwig result when what is being flagged is a clearly-attributed quote. Earwig can be useful for quick passes, but it is not a tool that understands context, and you as the user need to be able to differentiate between actual plagiarism and false positives. I flagged a longer version of this quote during the GA review, but my concern was about undue weight, not plagiarism. --Grnrchst (talk) 10:51, 29 August 2026 (UTC)
- Not hard. Just pointing out to a "limbo" in the rules. All laws or rules have limbos where a smart person can show whatever body of justice how useless the rules are. Is this my fault? I think it is not. That said I am not a troublemaker so if attributed quotes are allowed in spite of Earwig, take it as a green icon. see ya guys CoryGlee 02:42, 31 August 2026 (UTC)
- Hi @CoryGlee: just following up on this? Abu Isa 🇴🇲 13:33, 14 September 2026 (UTC)
