Related article needs improvement

I recently created McKenna West surrogacy case to capture both the legal proceedings and the ongoing debate about the particulars of surrogacy agreements vs. bodily autonomy that the case has generated. Linking it here in the hopes an interested party will pitch in to improve the article! cymru.lass (talk • contribs) 05:16, 23 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

How should we mention non-female surrogates?

[edit]

As it should be well-known by now, a person's sex is not necessarily strictly associated with their reproductive organs and also not with what a person claims about themselfs, so it's clearly not correct when e.g. the introductory sentence says (emphasis mine) "Surrogacy is an arrangement whereby a woman gets pregnant […]". It is also true though that due to the rampant transphobia and enbyphobia[1] the vast majority of surrogates are binary cis women, so I don't know whether this is sufficient to change the introductory sentence (and I also don't know what to change it to (only idea would be to change "a woman" to "someone, generally a woman,")).

Should we fix the whole article, just mention it in the introductory sentence, add a section about it (this has the issue that this would require proper citations and all reliable sources I can find relating to trans people and surrogacy are for trans people who want to become parents), or keep being wrong?

([1] see for example Lindsay B. Gezinski, Sharvari Karandikar, Alexis Levitt, and Roxanne Ghaffarian, “‘We Want to Offer You Peace of Mind’: Marketing of Transnational Commercial Surrogacy Services to Intended Parents,” Health Marketing Quarterly 34: 4, 2017, 302–14.) We should follow the same convention as pregnancy; I wasn't involved in the discussions over there but a wander through the Talk archives seems to indicate strong consensus for defaulting to female language. If that consensus were to change, it's probably something that should be a broader discussion than just a single article, perhaps a formal RFC? cymru.lass (talk • contribs) 00:11, 9 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, broader consensus is probably necessary for more than like one sentence. I'm gonna look into adding a line and at maybe starting an RFC (although I doubt its success given the number of cis people here…).
