Discussion of improvements to reach B class

Hi there. I created this article in its current form because I feel Sam Byrne is an important Australian artist and folk historian, and I wanted to create some online and international awareness of his works. I have included as much detail (maybe too much) as I have found through research, and the book by Mr Ross Moore has been an excellent resource. I am however not an experienced Wikipedia Contributor nor am I academically minded, so I recognize that the article will need changes to achieve a higher Wiki classification. Proposal to Replace Article Text – Seeking Feedback

In seven days, I intend to replace the current article text with a revised version, unless significant objections are raised. The draft version can be reviewed in my sandbox:

While the new version is still detailed, it reduces the total body text by approximately 40% compared to the current article, while also expanding the diversity, clarity, and precision of the content.

I have been the sole content contributor to this article since its creation. In January 2022, I posted a request for improvement assistance here on the Talk page, but received no replies.

Concerns with the current article

• The structure is loose and reads like a stream of consciousness.

• It often deviates from the subject to include indirectly related historical context or biographical details of others.

• It includes two subsections (Political views and Ill health and death) that are unnecessary; these points can be briefly incorporated elsewhere.

• The article heavily relies on one source: Moore (1985), which, while I personally think is excellently written, is not balanced by other critical perspectives. Some of Moore’s artistic comparisons—e.g., to Early Renaissance painters—are not echoed in wider sources. Moore is not a high-profile art critic and this is his only published work.

How the rewrite addresses these issues

• Introduces a clearer structure with new subsections focused on notability.

• Improves flow by creating a seperate Footnotes section for historical context and explanatory notes.

• Removes extraneous details from the Style and Technique section unless they contribute directly to Byrne’s uniqueness.

• Removes the two unnecessary subsections noted above, integrating key points elsewhere.

• Retains Moore (1985) for biographical details, but includes critical responses to Moore’s interpretations from other sources.

• Adds 57 carefully cited sources (almost all paper-based), including major commentators, historians, and arts writers—providing a more balanced assessment of artistic and historical significance.

• Simplifies prose and strengthens encyclopedic tone.

• Removes the term naïve from the main text (except in quotes), replacing it with self-taught, in line with the subjects own views and modern concerns around the use of that term.

• Adds a new Arts Literature section to summarise film and print publications about Byrne.

• Replaces Legacy with Historical Significance to better reflect the subject's contribution to cultural memory.
