Neologism vs. Historical Technical Term
[edit]I would like to open a discussion regarding the title of this article, as it appears to be a modern neologism rather than an established historical technical term. A quick search on Google Books yields no results for this specific phrase prior to the 2000s. Furthermore, the section discussing the nickname "Monkey" does not seem directly relevant to the article's title. While terms like "powder monkey" are heavily documented across centuries and widely included in specialized age-of-sail dictionaries, the phrase "rigging monkey" never appears in those same historical sources. Instead, the term "topman" is significantly more common, verified, and historically accurate for this role. I suggest we reconsider the page title to reflect reliable historical nomenclature. Requested move 23 June 2026
[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
The result of the move request was: not moved. Consensus that Rigging monkey is not the primary topic for Topman. New requests can be made proposing disambiguating Topman, or using a different title for Rigging monkey. (closed by non-admin page mover) BilledMammal (talk) 02:22, 20 July 2026 (UTC)
- Rigging monkey → Topman
- Topman → ?
– As per my previous discussion above, the current title is a neologism and does not reflect the historical term of topman which has been reported in every Dictionary and Encyclopedia since the Age of Sail. - Note: the second proposal, Topman → ?, has been added because "Topman" is a page with content and must also be dispositioned. P.I. Ellsworth , ed. – welcome! – 07:02, 23 June 2026 (UTC)
- IMHO the actual page named Topman could be moved to Topman (brand) Nicola Romani (talk) 07:15, 23 June 2026 (UTC)

- Support moving the 2nd to Topman (brand), but I'd say the safest bet is to create a disambiguation page at the basename, instead of doing an instant primary topic swap. Paintspot Infez (talk) 18:32, 23 June 2026 (UTC)
- Oppose moving this to Topman but fine with a qualified title like Topman (occupation) as the shop has 1,638 views but the occupation only has 88[] however it might be best to make the 2nd move and redirect to Top Man DAB page. Crouch, Swale (talk) 21:20, 23 June 2026 (UTC)
- Oppose but rename Rigging monkey to Topman (sailing) as it is the clear common name. -- Necrothesp (talk) 10:48, 24 June 2026 (UTC)
- Comment: Probably the best solution is to create a Topman disambiguation page and move this one to Topman (sailing), as suggested by @Necrothesp, and the other to Topman (brand). Nicola Romani (talk) 11:27, 26 June 2026 (UTC)
- Relisting comment: Multiple alternative proposals. Further thoughts? 1isall (talk | contribs) 15:55, 30 June 2026 (UTC)
- Oppose. This is the primary topic. No objection to adding Rigging monkey to the hatnote. 162 etc. (talk) 18:55, 30 June 2026 (UTC)
- Relisting comment: Currently a split on whether the brand is PTOPIC or not. –Maltazarian ᚾparleyinvestigateᛅ 01:32, 11 July 2026 (UTC)
- Oppose. The rigging monkey article does not even mention the word "topman". In fact, topmen, which has long been in the hatnote of Topman, redirects to a section of Royal Navy ranks, rates, and uniforms of the 18th and 19th centuries. In any case, pageviews indicate Topman is the clear WP:primary topic. - Station1 (talk) 06:21, 11 July 2026 (UTC)
