The QJZ-89 does not have a hybrid operating system.
[edit]The QJZ-89 is solely a gas operated weapon. I believe a misinterpretation of a Chinese press release of training has caused years of incorrect circular reporting.
Video of the weapon firing does not show any rearward barrel movement that is a sign of a recoil operated system. Disassembly video does not show any barrel recoil spring that is necessary for a short or long recoil system. Video does show the front lower section of the bolt having a recess for gas impingement, with the gas port from the barrel routing to the accompanying location.[1]
The quote regarding reduced recoil from a combined system can be attributed to a remote weapon station mount China has fielded on some assault vehicle such as the Dongfeng Mengshi protected assault vehicle class. Specifically, images and press releases show the CSK141/CSK141A Protected Assault Vehicle having this remote weapon station.[2][3]
The images and video show a QJZ-89 in this weapon station. The weapon is mounted on a sled that allows the entire weapon to recoil backwards in relation the vehicle to absorb recoil. [4]

- @SomeRandomGuy50, QJZ-89 does have a barrel recoiling system, just very minuscule. You can see it in this video posted on Reddit. It is most visible at 00:24. QJZ-89's barrel and gas system are both recoiling inside the receiver (not mounts), which is designed for recoil mitigation, not breech locking or feeding. The primary operating mechanism of the weapon is direct gas impingement.[1] Calling it a short-recoil action is indeed a bit premature. But it can still be called a "hybrid gas-recoil operation". On a separate topic, most sources on the internet are calling this a hybrid gas system (technically correct) or hybrid-short-recoil system (incorrect); in principle, Wikipedia editors should not use their own research as the reason to invalidate public sources. Still, I agree with you that it is not short recoil, so editorial discretion is needed. Based on video evidence and existing public sources, I recommend removing the mention of short recoil but keeping the designation of hybrid gas-recoil action on the page.--Loned (talk) 15:11, 6 September 2026 (UTC)
