The proposed image appears to be more recent and of higher quality than the current lead image and is already available on Wikimedia Commons under a free license.

No, the photo was not deemed within guidelines before. @Yoblyblob is not the user who deleted either of the two updated images on Commons. Admin did that after reviewing the no-good copyright information given by the uploaders, which was never remedied. Please remember to WP:AGF, and keep in mind that most editors here on Wikipedia will resort to using whatever Commons image we have on hand. It's not an issue of intent to use a particular image.
