• Article is new enough and long enough.
• Hook isn't supported by the Slate source (there's no reference to the rally of 1,500 people - the final paragraph only talks about the planning of a rally - it's a different source used in the article which supports that the information is correct)

Sourcing

Hi JJonahJackalope, thanks for working on this article! I plan to review it, but I noticed it relies on International Business Times for several citations (references 2 and 15). IBT has been deemed generally unreliable for use in Wikipedia. Would you be open to removing or replacing those citations before I review? Otherwise the sourcing appears to be strong. @Anne drew: Thank you for your notification here. I have made a few edits to the article and managed to completely remove the two citations listed. Morales then asked Carson, "Are you with him?", which Carson answered "Yes". This can be paraphrased to be more clear. Example: "Morales then asked Carson if he is with Robinson, to which Carson said yes."

Morales laughed and bragged about shooting Carson, saying, "I shot him in the face".[15] The quote is unnecessary, as the previous clause has already summarizes Morales actions and should be removed.

I disagree, as I feel that a direct quote from someone accused of committing an act, appropriately attributed, warrants inclusion, -JJonahJackalope (talk) 11:03, 7 August 2026 (UTC)

However, he was ultimately found guilty of committing a hate crime, with the sentencing judge comparing the murder to the Pulse nightclub shooting. I believe that "however" could be removed as the background information for that is not as relevant for the lead and including it can confuse the reader (it could implicitly mean that he does not commit a hate crime because of his sexual identity).

In the year preceding Carson's killing, there had been only one homicide reported in Greenwich Village.[5] However, in 2013, there were 60 assaults reported in the neighborhood, which represented about twice the number that occurred the previous year.[7] Remove source [5] from The New Yorker, as the inclusion of that source can led to WP:SYNTH and MOS:EDITORIAL while the Slate source has already covered the one homicide fact.

Verifiable with no original research

Mark Carson

He lived in Brooklyn and was employed at a yogurt shop,[3][4] working in a kiosk in Grand Central Terminal. Later sources claimed that he worked at Ciao Bella Gelato instead of a yogurt shop, so this should be fixed to reflect that: "He lived in Brooklyn and was a manager at a gelato kiosk in Grand Central Terminal."

Prior incidents that night

Morales then revealed that he had a handgun—a silver Taurus Armas .38 caliber revolver[14]—in a shoulder holster concealed by his sweatshirt and threatened to kill the bartender if he called the police.[9][4] Source [9] and [4] had adequately cover the use of the gun. Therefore, source [14] should be removed.

Interaction between Carson and Morales

In a later statement to police, Robinson said that he and Carson walked to Morales and asked him what he meant by the comments.[7] A witness to the event said that Robinson asked Morales, "Oh yeah? Well, what do you look like?".[4] I believe the NYtimes source [4] does not infer that Robinson said those things after Morales made offensive comments toward them. Furthermore, using two different sources here can be seen as WP:SYNTH so I suggest removing the second sentence and joining them to the next sentence.

I have slightly rephrased the latter sentence, as the source does not directly indicate the identity of the individual who said that quote. -JJonahJackalope (talk) 11:03, 7 August 2026 (UTC)

Memorials and protests

By the evening of May 18,[4] an impromptu memorial was created on the sidewalk where Carson was killed, consisting largely of candles and flowers.[31][32] For both sources, the [4] New York Times paper cover this better, and the two sources at the end of the sentence should be replaced with the [4] source from NYTimes.

Response from public officials

On May 20,[36] the New York City Police Department announced that they would be increasing their presence in Greenwich Village and the surrounding area through the end of June, which is celebrated as Pride Month in the United States.[16][17] This source is adequately covered by the Associated Press article dated May 20. The two remaining source (AP and WSJ) should be deleted.

Legal proceedings

Concerning the latter point, Morales said that he thought he was about to be attacked by Carson and Robinson and only shot Carson after seeing him bring out what he thought was a black gun.[20] However, Carson was unarmed.[8][20] The Guardian source [8] does not mention that Carson was unarmed, but the NYTimes source [20] does. Thus source [8] should be removed.

Before I make an edit here, I just wanted to verify that you would like for me to delete the first reference on the second sentence here? (At the time of your message here it was reference [8], but is now reference [6]). Broad in its coverage

The title Increase in anti-LGBTQ violence in New York City in 2013 could be shortened to Increase in anti-LGBTQ violence in New York City to better reflect the whole picture surrounding the killing, in that anti LGBT violence has been increasing.
