[edit]Anon. editor added phrase "Rewa Hard" etc, which does not adhere to Wikipedia Neutral POV. However the catch phrase maybe cited else where in the article at a later stage as part of coll. lanuage used by residents (please note that I have asked friends still in Manurewa and they have not hear of this phrase. Therefore added cat for POV-Check. Tom Webb 03:57, 30 January 2006 (UTC)
- I've removed the line you are objecting to, and the POV tag. Please re-add it if you are still not satisfied.-gadfium 05:18, 30 January 2006 (UTC)

Pronunciation
[edit]Could someone please add the correct pronunciation? Is it like "Manure-wa" or is it "Ma-nu-re-wa" or something else? Google says Rootsweb has a post saying the pronunciation is " (Mar- Noo- Re-wah)" but the post does not show up. Thanks. Edison 20:44, 8 August 2007 (UTC)
- "Ma-nu-re-wa" is correct. With a rolled r. /manʉɾɛwa/
- "Man-u-re-wa" is less correct, but commonly used — mostly by older people.
- Generally speaking, nobody is bothered by either pronunciation. Boomers tend to use "Man-u-re-wa", millenials might switch depending on who they're talking to, and younger were taught "Ma-nu-re-wa" in school. Samuel Bailey (talk) 21:39, 30 March 2026 (UTC)
It is "Man-u-re-wa" — Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.60.32.203 (talk) 08:21, 10 October 2018 (UTC)
Manurewa Seventh-day Adventist church
[edit]The discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Papatoetoe Seventh-day Adventist Community church merged that church article into Papatoetoe. This church also does not appear to meet the standards for a separate article per WP:CHURCH, and I suggest it be merged into this article.-gadfium 05:41, 2 April 2009 (UTC)
Notable people
[edit]There are currently three notable people listed as being from Manurewa. What is this? When did John Walker get dropped from the list? He’s a world record setting 1500 m Olympic gold medalist - it’s not even ancient history. 2A04:EE41:6:93CB:D5F9:A01F:DA1C:3980 (talk) 00:17, 2 March 2022 (UTC)
- I agree - John Walker should be in there. Currently it seems there is only one notable person on the list - Stephen Berry (born 1983), politician and political commentator.
- Apologies for any offense caused, but I believe the others should probably be removed:
- - Decepticonz, hip hop group: Not a person.
- - Jawsh 685, musician: Won a few awards, but doesn't seem particularly notable? I suspect this is self-promotion.
- - Erika Taeang, teacher: There are a few news articles about her, but probably not notable enough for a Wikipedia article.
- As-is the list should be removed, perhaps replaced with a notable people section containing subsections for each person. If you can't clearly articulate (with proof) why someone is notable with a short paragraph they can't be very notable. Samuel Bailey (talk) 21:17, 30 March 2026 (UTC)
Manurewa High School
[edit]Kia ora,
Thanks for this entry on Manurewa.
I might have missed something but in the 'Education' section I did not see Manurewa High School included in the list of schools.
Good work though and thanks again. Really interesting,
Naku noa,
Yours,
Peter Cleave Manurewa High 1961-5 BA, MA Auckland D.Phil Oxon Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit etc 158.140.240.242 (talk) 02:28, 11 February 2025 (UTC)
- You're right - I have no idea how Manurewa HS was missed out (it even has its own Wikipedia page). Prosperosity (talk) 03:21, 11 February 2025 (UTC)
- My fault. There is a separate article on Homai, and the article on Manurewa did not include that area. The school is briefly covered in the Homai article. When I expanded the area covered by this article yesterday, based on a better definition of Manurewa by Stats NZ, I should have addressed which article should mention the schools. Should we now remove Manurewa High School from Homai, or leave it there? What about Homai School, which is very close to MHS? My inclination is to have MHS mentioned in both articles, and perhaps HS should be as well.-Gadfium (talk) 04:54, 11 February 2025 (UTC)
Notable places
[edit]Should this section be removed? It's currently a rather lazy list of a few random places and seems to provide little useful information. The most significant places in the list are mentioned in other sections like History, others could be mentioned in sections like Sports. Samuel Bailey (talk) 21:29, 30 March 2026 (UTC)
Significant Māori / Pasifika population
[edit]"By the 2010s, Manurewa had developed a significant Pasifika population, and had the highest proportion of Māori residents in the city"
I believe this was true far before the 2010s? Manurewa had significant Pasifika and Māori populations back in the '90s. Māori have lived in the area since the 13th century. Samuel Bailey (talk) 22:27, 30 March 2026 (UTC)
- >Māori have lived in the area since the 13th century.
- Its quite obviously a reference to contemporary demographics, I don't see why the 13th century is relevant here. Although the claim is poorly verified with one citation just being to pure statistical data, and we need a secondary source to interpret that data for us, and the other referencing the Manurewa Local Board Traumnovelle (talk) 01:08, 31 March 2026 (UTC)
- The wording "had developed..." implies that it didn't before. Perhaps it just needs to be re-worded? One of the best things about Manurewa is how multicultural it is, and has been for decades. It would be good to include something about that in this article. Sadly I don't feel qualified to write about demographic changes, and I wouldn't know where to find suitable sources. Samuel Bailey (talk) 06:55, 31 March 2026 (UTC)
- Manurewa didn't exist in the 13th-century. The area was depopulated prior to the founding of the Manurewa Highway District and the modern settlement. Traumnovelle (talk) 19:15, 31 March 2026 (UTC)

Martin brothers' land
[edit]> Much of the Martin brothers' land became modern-day Manurewa
Does anyone have a map of this land? I'm keen to add the boundary to the Fairburn/Clendon purchase map, but not keen enough to go to the library looking for old maps to digitize. Samuel Bailey (talk) 07:57, 31 March 2026 (UTC)
Matukutūreia photo
[edit]The terraces on Matukutūreia seen in the photograph https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Matukutureia_-_Current.jpg and pointed out in the caption were created by recent quarrying. Does the caption need to be clarified to reflect that they aren't related to the historic pā? Or a different photo used? This is a good aerial photo showing both mountains in a much less quarried state, but it focuses on Wiri and points away from modern-day Manurewa. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Matukutureia_in_1952.jpg Samuel Bailey (talk) 08:17, 31 March 2026 (UTC)
