Windows Source Code Leak
[edit]This section appears to have just been copied from Windows Interface Source Environment. Can anyone provide more detail on the circumstances behind the leak? --danhash (talk) 16:09, 9 September 2011 (UTC)

Citations template
[edit]This article needs more citations in order to support what is on the page currently. I placed a template at the top of the page, but please review and remove if necessary. Shob9ty (talk) 17:13, 16 September 2021 (UTC)
Section Names
[edit]Is the header, "Microsoft integration" normal for a page like this? It seems promotional. Shob9ty (talk) 14:53, 7 January 2022 (UTC)
History corrections
[edit]I worked at Mainsoft starting in November 11, 1994, until November 10, 1996. The ending date was on the occurrence of a large reduction in force.
The founders were Jose Luu and Gregory Popovitch. I don't know the business arrangements before I joined, just that they'd brought the company to Silicon Valley because of the larger talent and investment pool, and that a significant portion of the investors were from Israel.
MainWin was originally a clean room implementation of the WIN32 API, and included MFC and DCOM support. The text of this page has confusion over our relationship with Microsoft's source licensing program.
We did not receive the Windows source code until (I think) mid-1995. The source tree included Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.1 beta. Getting this source tree was due to joining a program offered by Microsoft.
I was the first person on the team to attempt directly integrating Windows source code into MainWin. This was the LISTBOX control, and that fixed several bugs.
The architecture of MainWin's source and Windows NT source were very different. If MainWin had been based on Microsoft source code, as implied by the text of this page, its source architecture would be very different from what it was.
Another issue on this page is that it almost completely misses the Internet Explorer for Unix product.
There had been a competition between at least Mainsoft (MainWin) and Bristol Technologies to be the company that would port Internet Explorer to Unix. At Mainsoft, we put a lot of effort into this but ultimately Bristol won the initial round of the competition. The actual porting project, and the Mainsoft/Bristol competition, started before the May 1996 date mentioned in the "Internet Explorer for UNIX" page.
The June 1996 announcement that Bristol would be the technology provider ultimately led to a pair of layoff rounds, the second being when my time at Mainsoft ended in November 1996.
I don't remember when it happened - but the company attempted to lure me back in 1997 after the agreement with Bristol was canned. I heard at that time that Mainsoft and Microsoft engineers were working very closely together on more closely integrating Windows source into MainWin.
We also ported some Microsoft products to Unix using MainWin. This included Visual Source Safe and Visual Test. I worked on both of those. Dsherron (talk) 21:20, 8 October 2026 (UTC)
