I will take on this review! I typically prefer to make copyedits myself and only place comments here when I have questions, though of course as always you should feel free to change or discuss any edits you happen to disagree with. Looking forward to it! ~ L 🌸 (talk) 20:44, 4 August 2025 (UTC)

[edit]- I did a quick prose polishing pass, no outstanding issues for clarity/grammar. ~ L 🌸 (talk) 05:44, 5 August 2025 (UTC)
- I do find myself with some questions about Luboobi, which may or may not have answers available in the sources:
- The dates in the article right now make it sound like he was working at Makerere University while also attending graduate school at some pretty far-flung schools -- was he on leave from Makere? How did those timelines work out?
- He has children, so he probably had a spouse -- who is she, and when did they meet / marry? ~ L 🌸 (talk) 05:44, 5 August 2025 (UTC)
- What kinds of topics, in general, did he publish about? It would be good to have a brief mention of any areas that were particularly prominent. ~ L 🌸 (talk) 05:44, 5 August 2025 (UTC)
- It's not required for a GA to have images, but since Luboobi has passed away it would be fair use to upload a non-free file with Wikipedia:File upload wizard to use in the infobox to identify him, and I think it would be a big improvement for the article. In the progress tracker I've marked the image criteria as "on hold" for now in case you'd like to do that. ~ L 🌸 (talk) 05:44, 5 August 2025 (UTC)
- @LEvalynThank you for taking your time to review the article and I really appreciate it. I am going to attend to your questions one after the other.
- Yes, according to this source and several other sources, he joined the University officially after his graduation in 1970 but he served as a tutorial assistant in his 3rd year before graduation.
- Yes, he has a wife and children. I have added the limited information and the link to the info too.
- I have added his research focus area both at the lead and under the career section
- I have also added the under non free file.
- Thank you for taking your time to review it and I am also very sorry for replying very late. I have been on a journey to Wikimania and I have not been able to log in until now. Ibjaja055 (talk) 08:43, 7 August 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks for all this! I’ll double check the changes and finish the review (by doing the source check) shortly, probably by the end of tomorrow. I hope you had a great Wikimania! ~ L 🌸 (talk) 16:51, 7 August 2025 (UTC)
- @LEvalynThank you for taking your time to review the article and I really appreciate it. I am going to attend to your questions one after the other.
- Image has an appropriate fair use license and is a great addition to the article. ~ L 🌸 (talk) 19:08, 7 August 2025 (UTC)
- The additions to the article address my concerns about breadth. ~ L 🌸 (talk) 19:08, 7 August 2025 (UTC)
- For my source check I looked at cites 2, 5, and 7 as numbered in this diff. 5 didn't verify the info about NMAIST but the other source did so I just removed it there. Everything checks out, verifies nicely without copyvio or close paraphrasing. ~ L 🌸 (talk) 19:21, 7 August 2025 (UTC)
- In general, no red flags for reliability with the sources. So, I think this article is good to go! Nice work, and thanks for writing this valuable article. ~ L 🌸 (talk) 19:21, 7 August 2025 (UTC)
- Oh, I remembered to run it through earwig too-- some pretty high match percentages but just because of long titles of positions and papers; nothing that's actually a copyvio concern. ~ L 🌸 (talk) 19:23, 7 August 2025 (UTC)

Overall:
Funny and interesting hook! New enough, long enough. Too much WP:CLOP however; see Earwig, particularly after infectious diseases...
, the University of Bergen...
. Please fix this issue. For the first hook, is the source reliable? I notice the usual domain (per New Vision) is https://www.newvision.co.ug/
, while the domain sourced is http://newvision-web-nuxt3.us-east-1.elasticbeanstalk.com/
. Is there a reason for this? The lack of the "s" at the end of "http" is questionable. Even so, the former domain has questionable reliability; see New_Vision#Editorial_stance_and_perception. The formatting is also odd, although I assume this is because of the move from physical to digital medium - is there a physical copy out there on an archive to check? Some words are obscured/unreadable in the online source. Also concerns in WP:SELFSOURCE here. The only person to claim this (as far as I can tell) is Luboobi himself; to me, this reads like an exceptional claim. The second hook just isn't interesting to me, although I do understand interesting-ness is subjective, so if another person feels as though it is, I may leave it to the discretion of the prep mover. Pinging nominator @AirshipJungleman29: to address these comments. jolielover♥talk 14:29, 8 August 2025 (UTC)
- Pinging the article writer Ibjaja055 and the GA reviewer LEvalyn to see if they are willing to address the above; if not, this nomination can be closed. ~~ AirshipJungleman29 (talk) 14:46, 8 August 2025 (UTC)
- Happy to weigh in. Easy stuff first -- I revised the two instances you considered close paraphrasing. I really don't see any others; in Earwig I just see long unrewordable phrases like titles.
- As for the first hook -- I don't see a problem with the New Vision source, generally. The alternate URL has to do with how the web app is served through AWS but the article can also be found at their usual URL. The paper's pro-governmental editorial stance doesn't strike me as problematic for a non-political topic. The formatting seems unsurprising to me for a 20-year-old online news article. I'm not sure what words you're seeing obscured? I just see funky characters surrounding the punctuation, probably to do with badly-aging unicode in some fashion.
- Whether the source is sufficient for the claim-- I guess I don't consider it that exceptional, but we may simply disagree. If, in 2000, he is one of only two university math professors in Uganda, it seems quite possible that the Makerere College School would have no advanced mathematicians in 1965. If he's the sort of person who goes on to a PhD in math, it seems entirely in character for him to teach himself enough for an A (he doesn't claim A*!) from a textbook. (I've taught myself from textbooks more than once.) I assume the University of Makerere verified his A-levels before admitting him, and he appears to have told this story to the entire school and on television without anyone batting an eye. But I acknowledge that we basically just have his word for it, unless the headmaster for some reason wrote about the event. Perhaps the middle ground is to leave it in the article but not use it as the hook.
- The hooks themselves I will leave to AirshipJungleman29. Feel free to ping me again if it seems like the article needs any additional attention. ~ L 🌸 (talk) 18:22, 8 August 2025 (UTC)
- I don't think the first hook can pass. It's a claim not supported by people other than himself, and coming up with how it could be possible is WP:OR/WP:SYNTH territory. The second hook is not interesting. Any hook suggestions, @LEvalyn and AirshipJungleman29:? jolielover♥talk 07:33, 9 August 2025 (UTC)
- I think ALT0 could work if it's revised to say that he claimed it, rather than stating the claim as fact. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 01:33, 10 August 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks for that suggestion, @Narutolovehinata5:. The CLOP concerns have been rectified. Added claim to the hook. Since the source is not about politics and concerns on reliability are mostly based around that, I'll AGF and pass the hook. Thanks! jolielover♥talk 16:15, 10 August 2025 (UTC)
- I'd advocate for the phrasing "Luboobi says he chose..." rather that "Luboobi claims he chose..."; to me "claims" implies that we have a strong reason to believe the claim is untrue, whereas I think here we're just in a middle zone of cautiousness. ~ L 🌸 (talk) 23:41, 8 September 2025 (UTC)
