More than 1 day funerals
[edit]Hi. In the list two figures have had funeral for more than one day: Qasem Soleimani and Giuseppe Verdi. But ahould we really count the total number of people attending in those days? Aminabzz (talk) 15:19, 2 July 2026 (UTC)
Khomeini’s funeral attendance
[edit]Hi, I just edited Khomeini’s row number back to second as it was lower due to a supposed “2,000,000-10,200,000”.It seems they’ve mistaked a section of the nightly procession which was 2,000,000 as being the full attendance or possibly a snapshot of a day. With Soleimani’s funeral being accepted at 7 million due to a multi day procession then I see no reason why Khomeini’s 10.2 million figure doesn’t take precedent over the 2 million one ~2026-38206-60 (talk) 03:27, 5 July 2026 (UTC)
- There's multiple estimates. When that happens we include a lower and upper estimate, and this list is sorted by lower estimate. FDW777 (talk) 08:53, 5 July 2026 (UTC)
- The lower figure is regarding when the body was lying in wait, as far as I can tell, the total count is where the Iranian figure comes from. Soleimani’s funeral figure is also multi day and also from an Iranian source. I don’t see how we can take the multi day figure for Soleimani and not also Khomeini’s ~2026-38206-60 (talk) 13:22, 5 July 2026 (UTC)
- See the additional reference I added,
It was reported that more than two million people took to the streets to mark his funeral of the revered political and spiritual leader
. I do not see any significant differnce between that and the Soleimani reference sayingYesterday, about seven million mourners in Tehran thronged the thoroughfare connecting Enqelab and Azadi squares during the funeral.
.FDW777 (talk) 14:52, 5 July 2026 (UTC)- A. This “multiple estimate” choice isn’t applied to many funerals in this article, take for example this 5 million figure for C.N Annadurai’s funeral https://frontline.thehindu.com/photo-essay/tamil-nadu-annadurai-death-photographs-dashrath-patel-archives/article69999480.ece
- (That’s behind a paywall but there is an Archive.Today link
- B. Are we not weighting sources? Or for a matter fact even reading them? That source you just sent is from an article written 25 years after the funeral and is likely referring to the 2 million number we established is from either “western intelligence” or about the “lay in wait” period only and not the multi day figure given by Iranian sources and the more widely stated 10 million. Why for a matter of fact do we take gospel Soleimani’s 7 million figure which is from an Iranian source and not the 10 million figure also from an Iranian source? A lot of these sources aren’t good/are themselves reporting on figures that are “reported” by unknown sources. There must be some form standardisation or weighting. Khamanei’s funeral is put at 350,000 despite the many publications claiming millions due to a statement that was emphasising a point by The Guardian’s author which I wrote more on detail on in the Talk section for his figure. This entire article needs a revamp. ~2026-39067-59 (talk) 00:37, 10 July 2026 (UTC)
- See the additional reference I added,

- Why isn't Ebrahim Raisi in the list at all? He also had a huge multi day funeral. Aminabzz (talk) 00:57, 6 July 2026 (UTC)
- Because nobody has bothered to find a reference and add him? Perhaps if people spent less time trying to move the Khomeini entry they might have more time to do that instead? FDW777 (talk) 17:24, 6 July 2026 (UTC)
- The current presentation of the article appears inconsistent with the available reliable sources and with how other entries are treated.
- If multiple high-quality, independent sources report that Ali Khamenei's funeral drew approximately 12 million people in Tehran, with broader nationwide estimates ranging from 20 to 43 million across multiple cities, then those figures should be presented in the article with proper attribution and citations. If there is disagreement among reliable sources, Wikipedia's policy is to summarize that disagreement neutrally, not to remove well-sourced information altogether. It should be added at 1st place as it is considered, while numbers can be discussed but nit removing it entirely!
- Likewise, the entry for Ruhollah Khomeini should be treated consistently. Reliable sources, including references to the Guinness World Records for one of the largest funeral gatherings, commonly report attendance of around 10 million. Listing it as "2–10 million" without explaining why the lower estimate is preferred may not reflect the weight of the available sourcing if the article relies primarily on sources citing the higher figure.
- The list should be ordered and presented according to the best-supported, reliably sourced attendance figures, applying the same evidentiary standard to every entry regardless of the individual involved. Editorial decisions should be based on the quality and reliability of sources, not on personal views about the historical or political figure. Editors should not be baised! ~2026-37372-16 (talk) 08:50, 15 July 2026 (UTC)

- Here is The Telegraph giving a figure of 10 million. Theresonly1zlatan (talk) 00:33, 9 July 2026 (UTC)
- The Guardian also claimed 5-7 million. No response given yet. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/jul/07/millions-mourners-iran-regime-social-base ~2026-39067-59 (talk) 01:03, 10 July 2026 (UTC)
Page needs to be updated.
[edit]Following the funeral of Ayatollah Khamenei which approximately 15-20 million people are estimated to have participated in, this page needs to be updated to include this funeral. ~2026-38346-47 (talk) 07:48, 6 July 2026 (UTC)
- I'll be happy to, if anyone can be bothered to provide a reference. Ideally one giving a reasonably precise estimate, not just "hundreds of thousands" or "millions". FDW777 (talk) 17:25, 6 July 2026 (UTC)
- The funeral is still in progress. It will end on July 9. At least you should wait until July 10 to have it listed here with a reliable source. Aminabzz (talk) 09:37, 7 July 2026 (UTC)
- Al Jazeera has estimated 15 million ("and possibly more than double that according to Iranian estimates"). Financial Times has estimated 12-15 million. I think these are sufficient sources to warrant updating the figures in the article. Theresonly1zlatan (talk) 05:23, 10 July 2026 (UTC)
- Khamenei already appears on the list, please don't add duplicate information (that ignores lower end estimates also). FDW777 (talk) 08:03, 10 July 2026 (UTC)
- Lower end estimate from where? The guardian making a point regarding how disputed the numbers are? 350,000 is an outlier and 350k-35 million doesn’t tell anyone anything ~2026-39149-54 (talk) 13:51, 10 July 2026 (UTC)
- Khamenei already appears on the list, please don't add duplicate information (that ignores lower end estimates also). FDW777 (talk) 08:03, 10 July 2026 (UTC)
Khamenei
[edit]You cannot use a reference that was published on 4 July and only has the unreliable headline of Iran war updates: Millions expected in Tehran for funeral of Ali Khamenei
for a claimed attendance of 12 to 15 million people from 4 July to 7 July. We don't simply make up figures out of thin air, at least not in this article. FDW777 (talk) 09:11, 7 July 2026 (UTC)
- Fucking tedious.
- First "reference". Dismissed above.
- Second "reference". Gives a vague figure of "millions", nothing about 12,000,000 or 15,000,000 or any figure inbetween.
- Third "reference See dismissal of second "reference" immediately above
- Fourth "reference" Same again, just a vague "millions"
- Fifth "reference". Does give an estimate of
An inevitable numbers game has begun over the turnout at the funeral. Estimates for the Tehran leg vary from 350,000 to 35 million, confirming humanity’s tendency to see what it wants to see
- I note the one reference that does provide any ballpark figures was not being cited accurately, I have done so now. FDW777 (talk) 22:12, 8 July 2026 (UTC)
- 350,000 is a joke to mildly put it, simply by looking at the footage available shows that in Iraq alone this number was surpassed.
- During the 3 days of ceremonies and processions 23.715 Million passengers used the metro, buses, and taxis.
- The above was reported on July 7th, the number has only increased up until today.
- I strongly advise that those who write these articles have an ounce of self-respect and do not make themselves look like complete fools when writing these articles, do better. ~2026-38976-07 (talk) 15:44, 9 July 2026 (UTC)
- Take it up with The Guardian. We don't leave out their estimate simply because you don't like it. FDW777 (talk) 15:47, 9 July 2026 (UTC)
- Which is why i said it'd be wise for you to have some self respect instead of making yourself look like a fool, the numbers i gave you were precise exactly the way you demanded and cried for in here, and no these aren't your average numbers, the metro stations were filled with participants.
- The Guardians estimate is an insult to any person capable of thinking for himself, if you would've done research on the subject you'd have known that 350.000 people alone fits 2× into the Mosque in Mashhad where the funeral was held today alone.
- But clearly there's no research behind the article rather a randomly put together presentation.
- Like i said do better, otherwise don't expect people to tak eyour articles seriously or look to them for actual info.
- The reason people do not accept Wikipedia as a source is precisely seen here. ~2026-38998-48 (talk) 21:06, 9 July 2026 (UTC)
- The reason people don't accept Wikipedia is because people either make things up (been done several times in relation to this funeral already) or deliberately put something different to what the reference says (ditto). So you'll have to forgive me for sticking with what the references actually say, instead of what you (totally unreliable) say. FDW777 (talk) 21:12, 9 July 2026 (UTC)
- Which one is more reliable regarding a Funeral, the Iranian news agency inside Iran, from the officials with direct knowledge of these numbers, or "The Guardian" a foreign based press that reports on Iran only based on the news relevancy.
- Please you are a direct represenation of the misinformation Wikipedia is plagued with, which is why people refuse it as a source.
- Next time do some research on the subject matter or don't bother getting involved. ~2026-39106-61 (talk) 22:22, 9 July 2026 (UTC)
- I’m sorry but the sourcing for this entire article is kind of all over the place, we’re meant to accept The Guardian’s out of context figure of 350,000? It isn’t even their own estimate, it’s simply the author stating that the numbers are disputed and he’s given the range between he/The Guardian, massive emphasis on he/The Guardian, has seen which is 350,000 to 35 million, both figures are unsourced by the way. Note how the range is meant to emphasis the controversy, “An inevitable numbers game has begun over the turnout at the funeral. Estimates for the Tehran leg vary from 350,000 to 35 million, confirming humanity’s tendency to see what it wants to see”. That’s the author making a point, it isn’t a source. In fact that’s only the Tehran figure, multi day funeral figures in this article are counted, are they not? The Guardian itself more officially states that the figure was “in the millions” https://www.theguardian.com/world/video/2026/jul/06/millions-walk-ali-khamenei-coffin-tehran-funeral-procession-video
- which is in line with practically every other publication from; The Economist, CNN and FT’s figure of 15-17 million, etc. Hell that article itself states in its caption “Many of the millions who turned out for funeral wanted to show their opposition the killing of their leader, regardless of their broader views of the regime”. Why are we taking the statement about the fact that the numbers are disputed online as a the official toll? Instead of the more widely “millions” figure written in multiple publications. Of course it’ll be disputed, it’s a political event and you’ll have those that wish to minimise and those that wish to maximise. ~2026-39067-59 (talk) 23:55, 9 July 2026 (UTC)
- This is just head hunting for the lowest figure that can found. The figure itself is out of context, but most of these funerals can all be disputed as well, Which is it? Take for example Soleimani’s funeral figure which is 7 million in a single day in Tehran according to an Iranian source affiliated with the government and yet that are other articles claiming a higher and lower figure https://www.timesofisrael.com/35-people-reported-killed-in-stampede-at-soleimani-funeral/. Plus similar figures but multi day. What is the order of weight given to sourcing? Because it’s wildly inconsistent ~2026-39067-59 (talk) 00:19, 10 July 2026 (UTC)
- See WP:RSP, then stop asing silly questions. FDW777 (talk) 08:05, 10 July 2026 (UTC)
- And in case you don't understand the broader point I'm making, at WP:RSP you will find HispanTV, Tasnim News Agency and Press TV were deprecated for being propaganda outlets of the Iranian government. So the idea that the Iranian government are reliable for anything just won't fly. FDW777 (talk) 08:19, 10 July 2026 (UTC)
- Is IMNA not a state run media company? Yet that was used for the Soleimani figure? If thats the case, then they have reported that there was 4 million Iraq alone. Matter of fact the 350k figure is only regarding the Tehran Leg and not the full length of the funeral. How can you rightfully disregard Al Jazeera’s numbers as the funeral simply didn’t happen yet, but then take that figure (that The Guardian had seen and not reported) of 350k as being for the entire funeral? ~2026-39271-49 (talk) 23:53, 10 July 2026 (UTC)
- Also, I must have missed the column on this article titled "Number of people who used public transport during the funeral", since that's the only referenced figure you actually provided. FDW777 (talk) 21:15, 9 July 2026 (UTC)
- 23.715 million metro, bus, and taxi passengers in those 3 days in Tehran is just the same as the numbers in normal days. Aminabzz (talk) 17:19, 9 July 2026 (UTC)
- Public transport was routed to supoort the logostics of the funeral for the past days, there were a number of transportation vehicles utilized just for this funeral, these numbers are not your average daily transportation, these are counted from the routes used to get to these gatherings.
- Anyone who finds 350.000 as a "credible" number to even put in the article has made no research to know the very basics of the funeral in question.
- Reminding you again that today alone the proceedings in Mashhad doubled The Guardians reported "reliable numbers" inside the Imam Reza Shrine, which can house 700.000 people. ~2026-39106-61 (talk) 22:32, 9 July 2026 (UTC)
- Take it up with The Guardian. We don't leave out their estimate simply because you don't like it. FDW777 (talk) 15:47, 9 July 2026 (UTC)
- We’re not taking seriously the multiple figures of “millions” but we’re taking gospel the emphasis of a point that the funeral figures are politicised and therefore controversial with an unsourced 350,000-35 million? A number which the author has seen others claim? Give me a break. What kind of range is 350k-35 million anyway? What is that meant to tell anyone reading this article? This entire article is wrought with issues and with no standards or weight given to sources. The Guardian article in of itself claims that the Financial time reported 12 million attendees for Khamenei and then goes on to claim that Khomeini’s funeral was between 5-7 million, which is 2.5x the lower end of Khomeini’s current figure. ~2026-39067-59 (talk) 01:00, 10 July 2026 (UTC)
- Actually the lower end estimate for Khomeni is 2 million. FDW777 (talk) 08:07, 10 July 2026 (UTC)
- 5 million is 2.5x 2 million is it not? ~2026-39149-54 (talk) 13:52, 10 July 2026 (UTC)
- Actually the lower end estimate for Khomeni is 2 million. FDW777 (talk) 08:07, 10 July 2026 (UTC)

- How do you suggest that figure is incorporated into the article, and are there any other references that provide any alternate figures? Obviously I ask as there has been significant variation in figures to date. Note also the discussion at #Gross violation of NPOV removed below. FDW777 (talk) 12:46, 13 July 2026 (UTC)

Gross violation of NPOV removed
[edit]There has been a consistent attempt to only include Iranian state claims (and as noted, numerous Iranian state media are deprecated at WP:RSP, while excluding any lower estimates from more reliable references. This is a clear violation of WP:NPOV. As such I have removed the disputed entry entirely, and per WP:ONUS it is up to those wishing to include the content to gain consensus for inclusion. FDW777 (talk) 13:12, 11 July 2026 (UTC)
- Those figures claimd by the Iranian revolutionary guards of 40+ million just make no sense.
- Iranian officials said two days before that attendance was "15 million", and i don't really believe it can reach 43 million by two days.
- No reliable source can, no CNN and many others. Added that to Khamenei funeral page. ~2026-39056-11 (talk) 14:23, 11 July 2026 (UTC)
- Soleimani’s funeral uses an Iranian state media source, IMNA? Also the out of context low end 350,000 figure is regarding the Tehran leg only? The funeral had a few days afterwards. ~2026-38206-60 (talk) 21:48, 11 July 2026 (UTC)
- MNA has yet to be deprecated, and has only been mentioned a couple of times at WP:RSN. You can add 350,000 to the other legs if you like, it doesn't add up to 20 million or 41 million or whatever other low end estimate was being used. Or you could use the other estimate from the Guardian article, you still wouldn't get close to those low end estimates. And constantly attempting to increase the total by excluding lower estimates is not compliant with WP:NPOV. FDW777 (talk) 22:04, 11 July 2026 (UTC)
For clarity it is obvious the entry belongs on this list somewhere, but exactly where and using what figures is something that needs to be achieved through discussion, not by simply "fixing" it to add references that don't support the content and remove references that give lower estimates. FDW777 (talk) 13:26, 11 July 2026 (UTC)
- For context the references removed were from this version of the article.
- Dawn specifically attribute the claim to Iranian media. Thus the multiple deprecated Iranian state media at WP:RSP apply
- Al Jazeera dated 4 July. Considering the multiple posts above about huw totally useless and irrelevant this is, unclear why people keep adding it. Perhaps those adding it would like to explain?
- The Guardian One reference that does actually take a critical look at exactly who is making claims and the difficulty in assessing them. Naturally what this says was ignored. Why exactly?
- BBC saying nothing except
State media reported that millions of mourners
- DW Same as the BBC, just a vague "millions"
- Guardian (different from other Guardian article), as above,a vague "millions"
- EFE covers the Iraq part of the funeral, with a figure of four million.
- That's the lot. The figures that were in the article were "referenced" (and that's being somewhat generous) by a single Dawn article quoting Iranian state media, who aren't reliable. If there are other references they can easily be discussed, but right now all we have from reliable ones is a rather vague "millions" (except for the Iraq part) which doesn't help in placing the entry on the list. FDW777 (talk) 16:52, 11 July 2026 (UTC)
- I saw them, and those claims of 40+ million were made first by the Iranian revolutionary guards, then by some in the Iranian state media that are WP:RSP.
- I have two sources from CNN and France 24 that questioned those numbers.
- And if there is any realistic claim for the funeral of the late Khamenei i don't believe it can reach the 15 million. ~2026-39056-11 (talk) 18:21, 11 July 2026 (UTC)

I suggest adding Ayatollah Ali Khamenei from Iran in the list, as iranian sources say that the funeral had an estimate from 41 to 43 million attendees across many places in Iran (Tehran, Mashhad, Qom) and outside of Iran, specifically Iraq (Baghdad, Karbala, Najaf) ~2026-39379-31 (talk) 18:19, 11 July 2026 (UTC)
- Not done per #Gross violation of NPOV removed above. Per WP:ONUS, consensus is required for inclusion and per WP:RSP Iranian state sources are reliable for precisely nothing. FDW777 (talk) 18:29, 11 July 2026 (UTC)
- Iranian state media sources are included in WP:RSP.
- Other international news agencies don't agree with that. ~2026-39056-11 (talk) 18:31, 11 July 2026 (UTC)
- Specifically the following entries at RSP:
HispanTV was deprecated in the 2019 RfC, which showed overwhelming consensus that the TV channel is generally unreliable and sometimes broadcasts outright fabrications. Editors listed multiple examples of HispanTV broadcasting conspiracy theories and Iranian propaganda.
In the 2020 RfC, editors found a clear consensus to deprecate Press TV, owing to its status as an Iranian government propaganda outlet that publishes disinformation, conspiracy theories, antisemitic content including Holocaust denial, and a host of other problematic content.
Tasnim News Agency was deprecated in the 2024 RfC due to being an outlet controlled by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps that disseminates Iranian state propaganda and conspiracy theories.
- Given that, even if a claim that the Iranian state claimed something makes it into a more reliable reference, it really has zero cridibility (especially when as mentioned, reliablle references are saying the figures aren't correct). FDW777 (talk) 18:35, 11 July 2026 (UTC)
- Reliable figures are putting it in the millions but aside from that how come IMNA is used for Soleimani’s funeral? They’re also Iranian state media? Also why is the out of context 350,000 figure used when that article is speaking specifically on the Tehran leg? Multi day funeral numbers are allowed aren’t they? ~2026-38206-60 (talk) 21:47, 11 July 2026 (UTC)
- Provide proper references then. I've already dismissed the ones that were used in the disputed version of the article in the section above. I haven't investigated the Soleimani referencing yet, I've been busy fixing many other problems with the article. FDW777 (talk) 21:49, 11 July 2026 (UTC)

Ali Khamenai's funeral

Please consider adding the **State funeral of Ali Khamenei** to this list.
Iranian state media reported that approximately **41–43 million people participated in the six-day funeral ceremonies** held across Tehran, Qom, Mashhad, Najaf, and Karbala, describing it as the largest funeral procession in world history. The figure was reported by Iranian outlets including Press TV and Fars News Agency, and was also reported by other news outlets including Dawn and Roya News.
Al Jazeera reported on the scale and political significance of the funeral ceremonies, describing large-scale mourning events and preparations involving millions of expected participants.
Please add the entry with the attendance figure attributed to Iranian state media, along with the relevant citations, if it meets the inclusion criteria of this list.
Thank you. ~2026-39778-19 (talk) 08:46, 14 July 2026 (UTC)
Not done See numerous sections above about this, in particular the unreliability of the Iranian government. You are welcome to take part in the discussion about adding it, since it's clear it does belong on the list somewhere. Just at the moment it's a case of deciding where and with what figures. This list is missing the recent funeral of slain Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, estimated to have gathered up to 43 million people across Tehran, Qom, Najaf, Karbala, and Mashhad Details and sources can be found on already existing page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_funeral_of_Ali_Khamenei Erlan Fastril (talk) 19:21, 14 July 2026 (UTC)
Not done See multiple sections above. Also the figures you quote are Iranian claims, per WP:RSP we have deprecated multiple Iranian media outlets for being propaganda outlets. FDW777 (talk) 19:26, 14 July 2026 (UTC)
- The attendance figures have been reported by multiple outlets, including CNN, Al Jazeera, Reuters, AP, and other international media, in addition to Iranian sources. If you believe a particular source is deprecated or unreliable, please identify that specific source and explain why. However, the existence of Iranian state media reporting a figure does not, by itself, invalidate similar figures reported by independent reliable sources.
- If the concern is that some estimates originate from Iranian official statements, the appropriate solution is to attribute those estimates (e.g., "Iranian authorities estimated...") and also present any alternative estimates from other reliable sources. That is consistent with Wikipedia's policies on verifiability, due weight, and neutral point of view, not removing the entry altogether. ~2026-37372-16 (talk) 08:59, 15 July 2026 (UTC)
- The only reason is hasn't been added, in some form, is because those wishing to do so have yet to present an acceptable addition. "Acceptable" of course meaning one compliant with WP:NPOV, and not one that presents Iranian claims (which have been rejected by mutiple reliable references) as accepted figures. FDW777 (talk) 09:37, 15 July 2026 (UTC)
- See for example CNN and France 24 about the dishonesty involved in the attendace figures. FDW777 (talk) 09:49, 15 July 2026 (UTC)
- And, despite numerous similar discussions, we keep running in to the same problem. Nobody is proposing an actual change accompanied by references. FDW777 (talk) 10:30, 15 July 2026 (UTC)
Repeated removal of sourced attendance figures for the funerals of Iran's Supreme Leaders
[edit]I am requesting wider community input because the sourced attendance figures for Ali Khamenei's funeral have been repeatedly removed despite multiple reliable sources being presented.
The issue is not about promoting a particular figure, but about whether Wikipedia should summarize the available reliable sources with appropriate attribution rather than omit the entry entirely. I would appreciate uninvolved editors reviewing the sources and discussing whether the current version is consistent with WP:V, WP:RS, WP:DUE, and WP:NPOV.
I invite neutral and experienced editors to review the discussion and provide their views.
@Crampcomes, Genabab, Shahidul Hasan Roman, Noorullah21, Resnjari, SchwartzMorgan, Anas Riaz, Sarim Wani, Ahammed Saad, and Turnopoems:
Additional comments from experienced editors would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
- As I previously stated, the current presentation of the article appears inconsistent with the available reliable sources and with how other entries are treated. If multiple high-quality, independent sources report that Ali Khamenei's funeral drew approximately 12 million people in Tehran, with broader nationwide estimates ranging from 20 to 43 million across multiple cities, then those figures should be presented in the article with proper attribution and citations. If there is disagreement among reliable sources, Wikipedia's policy is to summarize that disagreement neutrally, not to remove well-sourced information altogether. It should be added at 1st place as it is considered, while numbers can be discussed but not removing it entirely!
- Glad you agree Iranian state propaganda has no place here. FDW777 (talk) 10:07, 15 July 2026 (UTC)
- Also, you are highly selective in what you claim Guinness World Records actually said, and for some reason fail to mention what the additional reference cited says, which is consistent with Guinness. FDW777 (talk) 10:11, 15 July 2026 (UTC)
- With all due respect, since we're apparently not arguing entirely on the basis of available sources here, what is the track record of American media when it comes to reporting on countries in western Asia? It seems strange to regularly rank outlets like the New York Times, CNN, etc. above Iranian news outlets on an issue so small as funeral numbers when those very same American news outlets were willing to tell massive lies about the Iraqi government in the lead up to the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003. I watched livestreams of the six days of funeral services from Roya News, a Jordanian outlet, and in light of what I saw of the crowds in Iran and Iraq, it seems very strange to remove Ali Khamenei's entry from this article purely on the basis that western sources (apparently?) refuse to give a consistent estimate of attendance. Is that really why we're omitting the entry, or have I misunderstood? Forgive me if I'm misrepresenting the case being made for omission here, is there really no "low estimate" in American, or western, or non-deprecated news media which we could use as the basis for inclusion? Albert Mond (talk) 10:38, 15 July 2026 (UTC)
- I've made repeated requests for references. People tend to stop replying at that point. I have said that Khamenei does belong on the list (given the lowest entry is 10,000, which his funeral clearly exceeds), and have simply asked for people to propose a change with reliable references. Every time I do that, all I get is silence. FDW777 (talk) 10:43, 15 July 2026 (UTC)

- These are the independent sources and agencies which stated 20 to 40 million… Obviously it is Iranian government which knows the tickets of metros and other transport! So Propaganda news channel Fox News is not going to tell the estimate! Ali Khamenei funeral is no doubt largest funeral in human history as editor Albert Mond Quoted the “Roya News” ! You can watch by yourself then you can compare with others mentioned with some common sense! The deliberate entirely removal shows personal opinion and baised….. Ali Khamenei funeral with 20 to 40 million in many cities is at 1st and rohullah Khomnei is at 3rd with 10 million in tehran alone…. ~2026-40052-37 (talk) 11:50, 15 July 2026 (UTC)

- Could you please identify which specific sources you object to and which reliable, independent sources you consider acceptable under WP:RS?
- If Reuters, AP, CNN, Al Jazeera, or other independent sources characterize the attendance as an estimate by Iranian authorities, then the article can simply attribute it accordingly (e.g., "Iranian authorities estimated..."). That is consistent with WP:V, WP:NPOV, and WP:ATTRIBUTEPOV.
- If you believe those independent sources do not support inclusion, please point to the relevant policy or source. Otherwise, omitting the entry entirely rather than attributing the estimate does not appear consistent with Wikipedia's approach to reporting sourced claims. ~2026-37372-16 (talk) 07:40, 16 July 2026 (UTC)

- Why should I do all the leg work? It's up to those wishing to include to actaully provide proper references. "Proper" obviously excluding ones published before or during the funeral that talk about an anticipated or expected attendance. There is no deadline, it will get added eventually. - As many are in agreement to add Ali Khamenei on this list, i believe you should try again. A person who would remove it in this case would clearly be a vandal given the reliable sources and consensus that exist/exists on this matter MazurTutejszy (talk) 14:39, 18 July 2026 (UTC)
- That's funny, I see repeated requests by me for proper references, and nobody providing them. See WP:ONUS as well. And I strongly suggest you don't attempt to continue down the path of vandalism. FDW777 (talk) 14:43, 18 July 2026 (UTC)

- When did I say anything about you being a vandal? Do you have any references? Or am I just wasting even more time with this discussion? The only things that has prevented Khamenei being added days ago is that those who wish to include him fail to actually provide proper references on request. They either provide ones that parrot Iranian state claims (see multiple deprecated Iranian media at WP:RSP) or they provide news articles published before or during the funeral that talk about expected attendance. So I ask you directly, do you have any references that we can use so Khamenei can be added to the article? FDW777 (talk) 15:19, 18 July 2026 (UTC)
- Why should i provide any references if you have them yourself? You were the one who brought up "sourced attendance figures" and them being vandalised; all i ask is for you to reinstate them given the lack of power and reason on the other side of the issue, that being vandals who remove such figures. Multiple reliable sources from the internet and some books estimates that 7-25 million people took part in Lincoln's funeral that also took place in different locations. i suggest adding it with "location" being "Various". https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/the-blood-relics-from-the-lincoln-assassination-180954331/ https://www.nationalgeographic.com/magazine/article/president-lincoln-legacy-funeral-train https://www.nationalgeographic.com/magazine/article/president-lincoln-legacy-funeral-train https://www.google.com/books/edition/Hymns_of_the_Republic/4xyzDwAAQBAJ?hl=iw&gl https://historynet.com/1700-miles-mourners-abraham-lincolns-funeral-train-traveled-across-seven-states/
I also suggest adding the funeral of Robert Kennedy with estimates are up to 2 million people. https://time.com/5300577/rfk-funeral-train-photos/ https://www.nbcnews.com/slideshow/rfk-50-years-later-look-back-assassination-bobby-kennedy-n880621 https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2021/06/06/rfk-death-mlb-players-boycott/
And also, worldwide TV rating for the funerals of Winston Churchill and John Kennedy should be reviewed. ~2026-39056-11 (talk) 10:23, 15 July 2026 (UTC)
Not done Edit requests aren't for complex changes like that that fundamentally change how the article works. FDW777 (talk) 10:27, 15 July 2026 (UTC)
- There's can't be an option adding Lincoln's funeral with "City" being "Various" or like "See state funeral of Abraham Lincoln?
- Funeral of Robert Kennedy took place in New York with sources claiming attendance of 1-2 million.
- Some sources are also claiming TV rating for the funeral of Winston Churchill and John Kennedy to be different as it noted on the article.
- See State funeral of Winston Churchill for more details. ~2026-39056-11 (talk) 10:50, 15 July 2026 (UTC)
- Per the discussion on my talk page (which I repeatedly said should take place here) the attendance at Lincoln's funeral is complicated. For example the 25 million figure is (from memory) the number of people that attended simultaneous church services across the country, not the number of people that actually attended the funeral. This is something that needs discussion (although it's like talking to myself round here) about how to handle it, which isn't what edit requests are for. FDW777 (talk) 10:54, 15 July 2026 (UTC)
Funerals of Abraham Lincoln, Robert Kennedy, John Kennedy, and Winston Churchill
[edit]As per my previous edit request above, I suggest adding the funeral of Abraham Lincoln with estimates for the number of people who actually took part in the funeral itself as well in other ceremonies at different locations as in the case other funerals like that of Qasem Soleimani for example.
The funeral train of Robert Kennedy was followed by up to 2 million people. https://www.nbcnews.com/slideshow/rfk-50-years-later-look-back-assassination-bobby-kennedy-n880621 https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2021/06/06/rfk-death-mlb-players-boycott/ https://time.com/5300577/rfk-funeral-train-photos/
TV rating for the funerals of John Kennedy and Winston Churchill should also be reviewed. https://www.businessinsider.com/jfks-funeral-seen-around-the-world-2013-11
State funeral of Winston Churchill. ~2026-39056-11 (talk) 11:32, 15 July 2026 (UTC)
- Attempting to increase the figures by comparing them to other funerals is WP:SYN. Specifically saying that if Qasem Soleimani's multi-day multi-venue funeral is classed as the figure then individual church services should all count towards Lincoln's figure is not appropriate. FDW777 (talk) 10:39, 31 July 2026 (UTC)
- That's is not the objection.
- What is that figure of 150,000 in a funeral that took place between 21 April-3 May? Did you see the sources? They are good.
- Our job is to keep it real, nothing more. ~2026-41617-32 (talk) 20:34, 31 July 2026 (UTC)
- And after some researchs, I can say 100% that Lincoln's funeral train was watched by at least 7 million people, at least.
- As it's also noted on other articles on Wikipedia.
- And the other mourners across the US can also be considered, why not? I'm 100% sure that you understand the meaning of the word. ~2026-41617-32 (talk) 21:00, 31 July 2026 (UTC)
- Also noted on other articles on Wikipedia because you added it there. As previously said I have absolutely no idea on the best way to handle multi-day funerals (although I personally don't class a body on tour as being a funeral), so it's something that needs wider discussion. Seven million watching a train isn't seven million attending a funeral, and 25 million hearing sermons about Lincoln delivered by local ministers isn't 25 million attending a funeral. FDW777 (talk) 07:52, 1 August 2026 (UTC)
- No, it's not just about my last edits.
- Look
- Assassination of Abraham Lincoln#Reactions
- John Wilkes Booth#Reaction and prusuit
- What about those millions? They can't be considering for showing up and paying their respects? or tnose who at least participated in memorial ceremonies? who they were? tourists?
- And between 21 April-3 May the number of attendance at a funeral that moved across seven US states was actually 150,000? What is the source claiming that anyway?
- I'm pretty sure you have much better ideas. ~2026-41617-32 (talk) 08:39, 1 August 2026 (UTC)
- Both of those articles talk about the number of people that watched a train go past. That isn't the funeral. If you want to add information like that to the article the best way would be by amending the TV audience column (or adding a new column) to detail it. FDW777 (talk) 09:34, 1 August 2026 (UTC)
- And how do you want to call it?
- But look, it's also said that Lincoln's coffin was watched by 1.5 million in person, so how the figure listed is 150,000? Also if those who lined up the routes are not cunting.
- How for example, it went at the funeral of C.N. Annadurai? I don't know. ~2026-41617-32 (talk) 10:46, 1 August 2026 (UTC)
- C.N. Annadurai's is repeatedly described as having 15 million in attendance at the funeral. As I just said, people watching a train go past isn't the same as attending the funeral. In the same way attending a local church service where a sermon about Lincoln was delivered isn't attending the funeral. Both are interesting things that could be covered in another column, but they shouldn't be used to replace the attendace at Lincoln's actual funeral, which was 150,000. FDW777 (talk) 10:54, 1 August 2026 (UTC)
- Wait, Maybe we should go a little bit back and understand how do you define the word "funeral".
- Do you want to remove now the funeral of Robert F. Kennedy also because it used a funeral train with up to 2 million people following it?
- I really don't understand you, How do you define or personally go to funerals?
- In the case of C.N. Annadurai for example and just for example, all the 15 million were present at the burial or the funeral service at the same time? Anyway, you can keep it as you wish.
- Why you don't want to update and fix the figure for Abraham Lincoln? I don't even think the source cited is reliable. ~2026-41617-32 (talk) 12:42, 1 August 2026 (UTC)
- I will not define funeral, since you will then attempt to amend published figures saying that various additional groups of people should be added to the original figure. The 150,000 figure is confirmed by the US Senate and countless books (search Google Books for
"Abraham Lincoln" funeral 150,000
). FDW777 (talk) 13:18, 1 August 2026 (UTC)- I don't use that kind of tactics, and yes you are 100% right, I have many countless Google Books as well other reliable sources for American history and history in general.
- I wanted yesterday to add some of them to the article, but you wasn't very happy about it.
- That sources you are claiming was confirmed by the US senate? Lincoln's final way was of 1,662-mile, not twenty.
- And it also noted on the article that his funeral took place between the dates 21 April-3 May.
- It you don't cunt a funeral service or paying respect for the deaths, so maybe it all should be changed to a different thing?
- Lincoln was a president of a nation at a time of civil war, and he was assassinated.
- Many people in the US, even in the south, were shocked. ~2026-41617-32 (talk) 14:15, 1 August 2026 (UTC)
- Listen, if that's the point you want to make, you can still have C.N. Annadurai as the "largest" without any problem.
- But look again at
- John Wilkes Booth#Reaction and prusuit
- It's said that Lincoln's coffin was watched by 1.5 million in person, so how his "funeral" was attended by 150,000?
- And what information you are suggesting to add to his funeral on TV audience? There was no television at his time and this how people went to funerals. especially for assassinated presidents.
- I was asking about TV rating for Winston Churchill or John F. Kennedy because things were changing around the world during this period of time.
- Please let me add the sources back to the article and see them by yourself.
- We are taking about very good sources. ~2026-41617-32 (talk) 22:49, 1 August 2026 (UTC)
- I think the source from the US senate is just a partly work, and don't describe the whole funeral.
- National Geographic

During the weeks after Lincoln’s death, as his funeral train made a circuitous journey from Washington, D.C., back to his hometown of Springfield, Illinois, perhaps a million Americans filed past the open coffin to glimpse their fallen leader’s face. Millions more—as much as one-third of the North’s population—watched the procession pass

The Lincoln funeral train embarked on a trip that took 1700 miles and involved an estimated 30 million mourners. Power wrote: “Baltimore was then under the control of loyal men, who felt deeply grieved that a plot had been laid there for his destruction when on his way to assume the duties of his office; and they suffered still greater mortification that it was a native of their own city who had plunged the nation into mourning by the horrid crime of assassinating the President
- If that isn't a "funeral" so how do you call a funeral? ~2026-41617-32 (talk) 02:13, 2 August 2026 (UTC)
- I have zero intention of providing a definition of funeral that you will simply misuse to violate policy. Numerous books state the attendance at Abraham Lincoln's funeral was 150,000. The attendace of people at related events is not the same as the attendance at the funeral. FDW777 (talk) 22:15, 2 August 2026 (UTC)
- Can you cite the books please? The source from US the senate mentioned "twenty milie" what twenty mille? what way? what dates? As it's widely known and accepted, that Lincoln's final way was of 1,662 mille or little more.
- But as I understand now and from what you saying, watching the funeral train isn't talking part at the funeral procession? Why it's called a funeral train anyway? And what the hell the Smithsonian knows? They are just the largest museums in the world. ~2026-41617-32 (talk) 23:27, 2 August 2026 (UTC)
- As before, search Google Books for
"Abraham Lincoln" funeral 150,000
, there's plenty. And as before, I refuse to get involved of this discussion that seeks to define "funeral" since you intend to misuse that definiton by adding synthesis. FDW777 (talk) 08:14, 3 August 2026 (UTC)- I'm adding just per WP:RSP, you know that. and the National Geographic, among others, is included as a reliable source.
- But what are you saying right now just makes no sense, you also know it.
- If Lincoln's coffin was watched by 1.5 million in person so how his funeral was attended by just 150,000? totally no sense.
- You said before something about adding a new column to the article, how do you would call or place it to deal with the funeral of Abraham Lincoln? You know very well that back then there was no television. and going to places of worship, especially for assassinated presidents, was the way of how people did funerals. ~2026-41617-32 (talk) 11:57, 3 August 2026 (UTC)
- So when you know you are wrong, with no more reliable source or research to support your claim you just don't reply or don't say anything.
- Just because at the funeral of C.N Annadurai for example, all the 15 million were personally present at the burial or personally touched the coffin. ~2026-41617-32 (talk) 18:58, 4 August 2026 (UTC)
- I reply when it suits me, not when it suits you. The C.N Annadurai funeral attendance is what reliable references say, the same standard applies to Lincoln. The number of people viewing a funeral train isn't the number of people attending a funeral. FDW777 (talk) 19:02, 4 August 2026 (UTC)
- Are you hearing or watching yourself? Just leave the numbers for now, but how it could be?
- "Watching" the funeral train wasn't just for taking pictures or making memories at a time when there was no television, radio, or Facebook.
- It's not cool that you are answering when it just suits you.
- Answer the facts. ~2026-45969-96 (talk) 05:16, 23 August 2026 (UTC)
- I already did answer. The number of people viewing a funeral train isn't the number of people attending a funeral. WP:STICK applies. FDW777 (talk) 06:57, 23 August 2026 (UTC)
- Again, what you are saying at the moment is not even an answer for a matter that was long written and published.
- I really don't know why are you saying or claiming such things, that's makes no sense or point.
- It's just look like that yourself want to add just what suits you, regardless if we are even talking about reliable source per WP:RSP.
- It's also sad for me that few and few people are using Wikioedia today, because there's also a big debate outside.
- For me personally, it's very useful, past and present.
- But there's always need to be an ambition for fixing or doing things better. ~2026-45969-96 (talk) 08:46, 23 August 2026 (UTC)
- The number of people that attended Abraham Lincoln's actual funeral, according to many reliable references, was 150,000. Other figures, such as the number of people that watched a train go past, belongs in either an additional column or a renamed column, not in the main "No. of atendees" column. I don't see what's so difficult to understand about this? FDW777 (talk) 09:25, 23 August 2026 (UTC)
- I didn't imagine at the beginning that me and yourself would end up in a situation where we’re arguing like children, and it's a bit frustrating.
- But what would you like to call it? And where will you place it? I think the page is already a bit cluttered as it stands—and somewhat difficult to read or use—but that depends. Why don't you give it a try? Then we can see how it looks. But promise me that if it works out, you won't keep the "Lincoln's Funeral" entry where it currently is. Because besides that, I have a few other things for you from reliable sources that you might want to add to the page. ~2026-45969-96 (talk) 00:35, 24 August 2026 (UTC)

- No idea. If you want to add it, up to you to propose something. FDW777 (talk) 07:30, 28 August 2026 (UTC)
- Let's make it simpler please. But since you were the one who suggested it first, please put in a bit more effort. after all, you certainly have more capability when it comes to design and placement.
- I don't know yet either, but perhaps at the spot where the "television audience" is located, we could add another option—maybe "memorial ceremonies" or something similar? Becuase back then, there was no television at all. ~2026-46630-04 (talk) 02:10, 29 August 2026 (UTC)

- Edit on my behalf? You are suggesting something just to get away with things that don't "suit you" then call it on "my behalf".

- I will not define funeral, since you will then attempt to amend published figures saying that various additional groups of people should be added to the original figure. The 150,000 figure is confirmed by the US Senate and countless books (search Google Books for
- Both of those articles talk about the number of people that watched a train go past. That isn't the funeral. If you want to add information like that to the article the best way would be by amending the TV audience column (or adding a new column) to detail it. FDW777 (talk) 09:34, 1 August 2026 (UTC)
Khameni thread #867
[edit]Content that has previously been objected to in detail at Talk:List of largest funerals#c-FDW777-20260711165200-FDW777-20260711132600 has been restored in this edit. For those who cannot be bothered to read that post, I will reiterate:
That's the lot. The figures that have been added are not supported. I have removed the alleged figures, and per WP:ONUS it is up to those wishing to include to gain consensus. This cannot be achieved by constantly ignoring what has been said on this page. FDW777 (talk) 13:08, 19 July 2026 (UTC)

- There is possible merit in using the 15,000,000 figure from Al Jazeera. Further discussion, not including replies with LLM, welcome on this suggestion. FDW777 (talk) 13:44, 19 July 2026 (UTC)
- I'm sorry guys, I'm a total outsider, but I fully excluding Khameini while the lowest estimates are above the current $1 is a little ridiculous and obviously politically motivated. We jave Qasem Soleimani at #2 with 7 million, obviously Khameine at >15 million seems reasonable. Just put him on #1 with >15 million kr a range estimate, but him not being on the list at all is just absolutely ridiculous. ~2026-41571-09 (talk) 03:35, 26 July 2026 (UTC)
- The reason he's currently excluded is because nobody seems to want to discuss how it's going to be included. Is the attendance going to be just ~15,000,000, or will there be an upper estimate? Is it going to be an entry similar to the existing Qasem Soleimani one, with multiple dates and venue? Once somebody answers those questions, it can be added very quickly. FDW777 (talk) 14:13, 27 July 2026 (UTC)
- I'm in favor of citing that Al Jazeera source and just entering it at 15,000,000. I would say we could list it as 15,000,000-43,000,000, but if there's no way to acknowledge the numbers published in Iranian media based on Iranian sources, then citing 15,000,000 based on that Al Jazeera article and leaving it at that seems better than excluding it altogether. The current absence is conspicuous. Albert Mond (talk) 23:47, 31 July 2026 (UTC)
- Pretty much what I had in mind, but things keep getting derailed by TAs insisting on higher figures. Something along the lines of the Qasem Soleimani entry with multiple venues and dates listed but with just a single total of 15,000,000? FDW777 (talk) 09:29, 1 August 2026 (UTC)
- Yes, that sounds fine. Albert Mond (talk) 00:43, 5 August 2026 (UTC)
- @Albert Mond you're demonstrating why the current absence continues. I try and come to an agreement as to how the information should be presented, and all I get is silence. That, or TA's who want to inflate the 15,000,000 figure to one they've made up. FDW777 (talk) 22:19, 2 August 2026 (UTC)

Logically speaking the Supreme Leader of Iran is much more popular than a commander like Qassem Soleimani which was put at 8,000,000 on the list (same logic applies to Khomenei)' . - Are you proposing an entry similar to the existing Qasem Soleimani one, with multiple dates and venues, but with a single estimated total? Presumably the total would be 15,000,000 up to a figure yet to be agreed? FDW777 (talk) 14:26, 21 July 2026 (UTC)
- Quick question, would 41,000,000-43,000,000 attendees as an estimate across 6 different provinces and 2 countries considered by iranian state media as a reliable source? Thank you ~2026-39379-31 (talk) 12:13, 24 July 2026 (UTC)
- No. Per multiple entries at WP:RSP, the Iranian state are unreliable propagandists. When this entry is included, the lower estimate will probably need to be the 15,000,000 figure from Al Jazeera. FDW777 (talk) 12:15, 24 July 2026 (UTC)

- You can try arguing the sky isn't blue if you like, but it will only delay the addition. Per the reference you just posted,
The burial ceremony was private but followed a week of public mourning and processions that drew huge crowds totalling more than 15 million people
. The reference says nothing about Tehran alone being 15,000,000, and when it does mention Qom it saysOn Tuesday, several hundred thousand people crowded onto the streets of the holy city of Qom
. Continuing to make false claims that are contradicted by the reference you are yourself providing simply slows things down, not speeds them up. FDW777 (talk) 16:08, 27 July 2026 (UTC)At least 12 million people thronged the streets of the capital on Monday as the coffin was slowly driven on the back of a truck on a 10km (six-mile) procession to Azadi Square, the vast plaza in western Tehran that has served as the stage for the Islamic Republic’s largest gatherings ever since the 1979 Revolution
- there is no doubt more than 10 million was in capital city tehran! So it will be 10 to 15 million in Tehran lower to higher estimates… ~2026-41999-43 (talk) 03:49, 28 July 2026 (UTC)

- That is not claim bro! That is reference from Al Jazeera!
- I have concerns about the attendance figures being used for comparison.
- I have watched the state funerals of Pope John Paul II, Khaleda Zia, Qasem Soleimani, and Queen Elizabeth II live. Based on available broadcast visuals, the turnout for the funeral in Ali Khamenei's single city appears significantly larger than the others listed.
- However, per WP:V, we need reliable sources with methodology, not visual estimates.
- Currently 80% of these numbers are claims without methodology:
- Example: Queen Elizabeth II "1 million attended" - What is the basis? Broadcast visuals show thousands, and Met Police only gave an estimate for the queue, not total attendance.
- To maintain NPOV, I have removed Elizabeth II from the comparison table for now until a source with methodology is provided.
- I propose we either:
- 1. Either provide reliable source for all or remove!
- 2. Remove all specific numbers until independent verification exists.
- We should discuss this word by word and avoid relying on single region sources. Please provide proper references for any number added.
- We will discuss word….if don’t, u are baised ….kindly provide proper reference without claims or western propaganda! ~2026-41864-60 (talk) 16:06, 28 July 2026 (UTC)
- I have repeatedly explained what Al Jazeera actually say, and they do not make the claims you think they do. Since you insist on ignoring what references say and instead are intent on deliberately distorting what references say or performing original research, there is nothing left to discuss at present. Should you wish to make a proper suggestion with references you are welcome to do so. "Proper suggestion" meaning one that is specific in terms of figures, dates and locations, not a vague "20,000,000" suggestion that fails to mention dates and/or locations or one that inflates the figure(s) in the reference.
