Not sure input needs to be comprehensible to be effective at learning a language

[edit]

The section on "Immersion is not always the best way to learn a language" states that

> The ability for learners to develop their language skills depends to a large extent on the type of language input that they receive. For input to be effective for second-language acquisition, it must be comprehensible.

This seems counterintuitive to me (you "train your ear" by simply hearing a lot of a language spoken, which is arguably a large part of the difficulty) and the only source provided is paragraph level and is a full book rather than a precise chapter. I must confess I did not attempt to locate the claim in the book. SCoumes (talk) 09:30, 14 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Poor quality article

[edit]

This article is riddled with inaccuracies and poorly sourced. It should either be corrected and rewritten, or removed. The most egregious is the section about intelligence. The strongest predictor of language learning success is language learning aptitude, which overlaps substantially with overall inteligence. Motivation is generally a weaker predictor, "tolerance for ambiguity" and "self-esteem" don't have much supporting data. ~2026-41310-72 (talk) 21:20, 23 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Is there even a precedent for Wikipedia articles that are “a list of common misconceptions about"? This article more so feels like someone trying to vent about something. I don't feel it is within Wikipedia's scope to include these kinds of articles and that it should be removed. What evidence is there even that these misconceptions are “common”? This feels more like something written by someone who had one too many interactions with people who either believed in legitimate misconceptions, or had a different opinion and went on to write a Wikipedia article to vent steam. This article feels very argumentative to me. Preukl (talk) 22:25, 26 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
