How Jolson met his last wife is accurately portrayed----but not mentioned is that he went on USO tours because his career was in such a slump that they were literally all the bookings he could get. He came down with malaria and had to have most of one lung removed---and as in the movie,he fell in love with his nurse.Who had NO

notions of a competing show business career. And the illness had mellowed out his voice somewhat, so he could fall more in line with t he public demand for "crooners".
