Inclusion of "Big Innes" nickname
[edit]Following the previous reversions of my edits regarding Cameron's "Big Innes" nickname, I've done some further research and found considerably more evidence supporting its inclusion.
The original concern raised by GiantSnowman was regarding the significance of the nickname and whether there was sufficient evidence of its usage. I believe the following sources demonstrate that "Big Innes" is an established nickname, used consistently over several years by multiple clubs and appearing in national sports media. These are only just a handful of examples, there are dozens more across the internet.
Examples of the nickname's usage:
- Kilmarnock (February 2022): The club referred to Cameron as "Big Innes" in an official publication.
- Sky Sports (November 2023): Kilmarnock manager Derek McInnes referred to Cameron as "Big Innes" in a post-match interview published by Sky Sports, stating: "I'm really pleased for Big Innes."
- Kilmarnock (May 2024): The club referenced the "Big Innes" character from the Scottish sitcom Still Game when announcing Cameron's new contract.
- BBC Sport (February 2025): Derek McInnes again referred to him as "big Innes Cameron" in coverage published by BBC Sport.
- Raith Rovers (February 2026): The club referenced the Still Game character in two separate social media posts announcing Cameron's signing: video 1 and video 2.
- Raith Rovers (March 2026): The club published a promotional poster depicting Cameron as the Still Game character, alongside further usage of the nickname on its official social media.
- Raith Rovers match coverage: The nickname also appears in the club's official match coverage.
This demonstrates usage dating back to at least 2022, well before Cameron joined Raith Rovers. Furthermore, both Kilmarnock and Raith Rovers have independently made the specific connection to the Still Game character in their promotional material, as have Barrow in their fanzine.
I appreciate that some of these are primary sources, but they directly demonstrate the clubs' repeated usage of the nickname. The Sky Sports and BBC Sport references provide additional evidence of its usage appearing in independent national sports coverage.
I'm struggling to understand why a brief, sourced mention of the nickname would be inappropriate given this evidence. This is clearly not something I've invented, nor is it a one off joke from a single social media post.
I believe the nickname and its connection to Still Game provide relevant context to Cameron's football career, particularly given the name's repeated use by two different Scottish clubs. I'm happy to discuss whether this should be a standalone section or a shorter paragraph within the existing article.
I'd appreciate some specific feedback on why the available sources would be considered insufficient, or why the information should otherwise be excluded?
