Creed of Ibn Aqil

Hello, I think the “Creed” section on Ibn ʿAqīl should be changed from Ashʿarī to Atharī. I also think it would be important to mention that he was initially a Muʿtazilī, since this was an important stage in his life. Even at that time, Hanbalī scholars had already written refutations against him because of his iʿtizāl, such as Ibn Qudāmah. Also, just looking at Ibn ʿAqīl’s works makes it pretty clear that he was far from being Ashʿarī. He explicitly affirmed sounds and letters as the speech of Allah, which Ashʿarīs reject. He also wrote works refuting the Ashʿarīs on tafwīḍ and arguing for ithbāt, among other things. As far as I know, no serious scholar or specialist has classified Ibn ʿAqīl as Ashʿarī. Calling him Ashʿarī is a very strong exaggeration and doesn’t really reflect his actual theological position. Kullabiyyah (talk) 10:13, 10 August 2026 (UTC)

It's the exact same except that he was never mu'tazili plus he identify himself as a follower of Ahmed in aqidah (an athari). Some people may say he used ta'wil but i don't consider this an argument because many hanbali used ta'wil and there is a divergence wherever it's haram or not within the athari aqidah. He contradicts himself a lot in Aqidah. In his Tafsir known as "Zad al-Masir" he usually forbids Ta'wil but in "al-Baz al-Ashab" and "Sayed al-Khatir" he consistently uses it. ~2026-46934-32 (talk) 19:47, 31 August 2026 (UTC)
