I propose splitting this article into Chagossian Government and Chagossian Government-in-exile. Do you agree? ~2026-15931-97 (talk) 09:54, 14 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

I don't, even if this were instituted as an actual government, the brief history of it 'in exile' can just be covered in the History section. They're not separate topics Kowal2701 (talk, contribs) 21:20, 14 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

no Disagree: Currently there is no 'Chagossian Government' beyond the government-in-exile so to have two articles would be redundant and confusing. Rccn (talk 15:01, 8 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Legitimacy of this government

[edit]

I wish to express serious concerns regarding the legitimacy of the proposed Chagossian Government-in-Exile.

While the intention to represent and defend the rights of Chagossians is important, the process used to establish this body raises fundamental issues when measured against basic democratic principles and widely accepted international norms.

The voting process was not inclusive. Communication about the vote appears to have been initially limited to a select group, rather than the Chagossian community as a whole. It was only afterwards that a public announcement was made on Facebook, by which point the process was already underway. This is not a transparent or fair way to initiate an election of such importance.

Furthermore, no formal or open call for candidates was made prior to the announcement. Without candidates, there can be no real election. In such circumstances, any declared “winner” would have prevailed regardless of the number of votes received, simply because there was no genuine competition.

It has been claimed that more than 1,000 votes were cast. However, the global Chagossian community is estimated to number around 10,000 people. Even if this figure is accurate, it represents only a small fraction of the community and cannot be taken as a reflection of the will of the majority, especially in a process that was neither inclusive nor properly organised.

As a result, not all Chagossians were able to participate meaningfully. A body that claims to represent an entire people must be based on broad, informed, and inclusive participation—not a limited or retrospective process.

There are also concerns about external influence in the organisation of this initiative, as well as the integrity of the voting process itself, including whether participation was strictly limited to Chagossians.

In addition, the organising body is not internationally recognised, does not have the clear support of the whole community, and has not been recognised by any host government, factors that are essential to the legitimacy of any government-in-exile.

For these reasons, this initiative cannot credibly claim to represent the Chagossian people as a whole.

A legitimate process must be inclusive, transparent, competitive, and grounded in the genuine consent of the community, not decided without it. ~2026-21771-91 (talk) 10:22, 9 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

As a conclusion of Mandarin's group not being recognised as a government internationally, nationally and only by a fraction of the Chagossian people itself, it is fair to say that it is unrecognised. Per a pre-existing consensus, Wikipedia uses Template:Infobox micronation for unrecognised entities like this, and not Template:Infobox dependency or Template:Infobox country which make them appear more legitimate than they are in reality. That applies to this article too, and thus this article's infobox must be the former. --Fippe (talk) 07:52, 26 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Just a correction, "only by a fraction of the Chagossian people itself" is incorrect; the vast majority of Chagossians live in the UK and voted in this election.
Also the essay argument from ~2026-21771-91 is fine and well, but wiki is an encyclopedia, not a source of argument itself; none of the anonymous account's (~2026-21771-91) claims are sourced, but regardless it wouldn't matter. Abumoh00 (talk) 00:08, 27 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
No, fraction is indeed the right word. A bit over 1k people voted (according to the people who organised the vote), while there are about 10k Chagossians world wide, about half of them in the UK. The vast majority of Chagossians did not participate in this vote. --Fippe (talk) 21:10, 27 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
That’s how democratic votes tend to go; a lot of people don’t vote, though they were eligible. And from my understanding it’s no where close to half. It’s the vast majority who live in the UK. Abumoh00 (talk) 23:31, 27 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
I don't have an opinion on what template is best but the word "micronation" should not be used because 1) it is unsourced and 2) this self-declared government does not claim sovereignty. Chessrat (talk, contributions) 09:16, 16 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
