Gooning is a brain rot term

This thread is a continuation of Template talk:2020s slang#Gooning as brain rot.

I feel like it's incredibly clear here that they're saying that brain rot is both "half-sensical streaming lingo" AS WELL AS "porno slang". And as I mentioned in the previous thread, Press-Reynolds uses gooning as an example of brain rot. Just because something is one thing (porno slang) does not mean it cannot also be another thing (brain rot). feedmepaperr (talk) 20:05, 29 August 2026 (UTC)

Gooning this, sigma that, skibidi this — they're very intelligently aware of the absurdity of all this discourse and language use."

As a member of Gen Z, Paolo was innately familiar with the brain-rot humor of gooners and gooning. He saw the terms being used "only by those porn-addicted communities who try to overload their videos with multiple sexual clips in a single video." But recently, he said, "these terms went from being sexual-deviant terminology to mainstream Gen Z skibidi toilet sigma lingo." To his point, "brain rot" is the 2024 Oxford word of the year.

I am going to ping some other possibly interested editors. @Adleid @ArtemisiaGentileschiFan

Let me, as neutrally as possible, summarize this situation.

I moved the link for Gooning on Template:2020s slang from the "Others" section to the "Brain rot" section. Editor 162 etc. reverted that edit claiming gooning is not related to brain rot. I redid the edit, citing the fact that this article did mention that gooning was a brain rot term. 162 then reverted that edit and removed the claim from this article that gooning is brain rot since the source for it didn't directly call gooning a brain rot term. I am fine with that decision, since the source was weak. I have since found two sources which I believe do back up the claim that gooning is a brain rot term, but 162 does not accept them since their interpretation of what the sources are saying does not align with mine. ARoseThorn has also found two other sources which back up the claim. 162 has not yet responded to this thread. I am trying to gain consensus. We must be careful when it comes to WP:SYNTH. If an article about brainrot mentions gooning, that does not automatically mean that gooning = brainrot. I welcome further input from any interested editors, as well as other reliable-source evidence that we can consider here. 162 etc. (talk) 17:53, 30 August 2026 (UTC)

I'd still like to point out the wording of Martin 2024.

You said that gooning is not necessarily brain rot because the source defines it as porno slang. Are gyatt and ohio not brain rot because the source also defines them as streaming lingo? I'm struggling to understand how you're not seeing what we're seeing here. I don't think this source is SYNTH. feedmepaperr (talk) 18:14, 30 August 2026 (UTC)

It's more like gooning has been adopted into the brainrot lexicon. Depending on the context and speaker, gooning could be either the specific fetish or the less specific brainrot term. Adleid (talk) 01:06, 31 August 2026 (UTC)

Questionable Neutrality

The neutrality of this article is questionable at best, a lot of claims seem to be very biased towards the 'gooners' point of view. Polarnebula (talk) 23:57, 2 September 2026 (UTC)
