Jewish-Austrian or Jewish Romanian origin, really?

[edit]
"... of Jewish-Austrian or Jewish Romanian origin"

It's plausible that it was created as a result of the reforms by Joseph II, maybe as a variant to Goldberg, and that it spread out from the Habsburg Empire. It was also quite common among Romanian Jews. But A) where's a reliable source, and B) it most certainly didn't originate in "Romania" (Moldavia? Wallachia? Transylvania? United Principalities? Greater Romania?), other than maybe from an American perspective - maybe a large number of Goldenberg families in the Americas did indeed originate from "Romania". But that's unsourced and a stretch. Pls also notice that Grigory Goldenberg came from Berdychev, quite far north of both.

Until proven otherwise, I'll replace these claims with

"... of Ashkenazi Jewish origin."
