The article Flag of Syria, along with other pages relating to the Syrian Civil War and ISIL, is designated by the community as a contentious topic. The current restrictions are:

Enforcement procedures:

Violations of revert restrictions should be reported to the administrators' edit warring noticeboard.
Editors who violate any listed restrictions may be blocked by any uninvolved administrator, even on a first offense.

With respect to any reverting restrictions:

Edits made solely to enforce any clearly established consensus are exempt from all edit-warring restrictions. In order to be considered "clearly established" the consensus must be proven by prior talk-page discussion.
Edits made which remove or otherwise change any material placed by clearly established consensus, without first obtaining consensus to do so, may be treated in the same manner as clear vandalism.
Clear vandalism of any origin may be reverted without restriction.
Reverts of edits made by anonymous (IP) editors that are not vandalism are exempt from the 1RR but are subject to the usual rules on edit warring. If you are in doubt, contact an administrator for assistance.

Current flag adoption date?

I'm wondering why the adoption date of the current flag is 2006, because of how the independence flag from 1930 is the same say for the aspect ratio any explanations? KreamoNoBrainos/Kreamy/Fat Man (talk) 13:56, 17 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

The North Korea flag article still lists 1948 as the date it was introduced despite the ratio being changed just a few months ago.

The flag of France still shows 1794 despite the colors being modified in 2020.

The flag of Russia shows 1705 despite being abolished in 1922, readopted in 1991 and having the ratio and a color change in 1993.

The flag of the United Kingdom shows 1606 as it's adoption date despite St Patrick's Saltire only being added in 1801.

The flag of Germany shows the original adoption date in 1919 which was with a 2:3 ratio despite the flag being readopted with a 3:5 ratio in 1949.

Why is Syrian flag held to a different standard where a mere ratio change from 1:2 to 2:3 removes the mention of the original adoption date of 1930? Thegunkid (talk) 10:45, 29 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

This reflects the fact like Syria the flag was originally used by the whole country, abolished by a regime, country split in half with one part adopting it, then that half took control of the whole nation.

The 2025 date is important as there was no official ratio of the opposition flag, as reflected by the fact the original draft of the 2025 provisional constitution had the original 1:2 ratio in it but they changed it to the current 2:3 ratio in the final version.

I don't like including the 2006 date as it was from an opposition event held outside of Syria and I remember the early days of the civil war the Syrian Oposition were originally firmly behind using the Ba'athist flag as it technically pre-dated the Assad dynasty by 5 years and had pan-arab symbolism, unlike the Libyan precedent, where the plain green flag was purely an arbitrary personal choice by Gaddafi. Revolution flag

Per the Syrian government, the current flag of Syria is the Revolution Flag. This can be seen at 1:25 in a video posted on the official Syrian government X account during the unveiling of Syria's new national emblem last year. HurricaneEdgar 01:30, 23 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

@HurricaneEdgar, Abo Yemen, RamiPat, and NeoSyria: all reliable sources said that the revolution have decided to adopt the independence flag. Until 2025, the revolution flag does not have an official proportion.

So saying that independence and revolution flag are not the same is an WP:OR. Also a new proportion does not mean a new flag. Panam2014 (talk) 20:05, 18 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

I reworked this article to clarify the distinction between the Independence Flag and the Revolution Flag, as readers were confused and often claimed that they were the same. I also rewrote the lead to follow the same style as the articles on the Flag of the United States and the Flag of Russia. In addition, I included information about the flag's designer after finding a reliable source identifying the author of the Revolution Flag. HurricaneEdgar 07:57, 30 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
