Performed on trans women vs on transfeminine individuals

[edit]

Hi WikiHelper232, I saw you changed the lede from saying that FFS is performed "almost exclusively on transfeminine individuals" to "almost exclusively on trans wom[e]n." While the source there does mention trans women as receiving FFS, it also says "gender non-conforming individuals" might receive "any masculine or feminine spectrum surgical procedures." Or, if that's too WP:SYNTH for you, these reviews all refer to it being done to transfeminine people, not just trans women. I'd therefore suggest we change it back? radioactOlive(she/it)(talk) 20:48, 11 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi,
the term transfeminine is fairly new in the literature. Just as people used to talk about "male-to-female-transsexuals" decades ago, the same is true for the term transfeminine. In my sample, I’ve noticed an increase in the use of transfeminine in recent years. Nevertheless, in most works, trans woman clearly predominates, or trans women are mentioned first and then transfeminine in the same sentence, as for example here:
Facial gender-affirming surgery (FGAS) is an overarching term to describe surgical procedures used to feminize the faces of transgender women and trans-feminine or gender diverse patients (Raner, 2024).
Aside from that, the term trans woman is much more understandable to the lay reader and more common in general usage, not to mention gender-diverse people.
Personally, I would recommend this phrasing as a compromise:
FFS is performed almost exclusively on trans women and transfeminine individuals.

I might recommend "FFS is performed almost exclusively on trans women and other transfeminine individuals," since trans women are a subset of transfems? But that mostly sounds good to me. radioactOlive(she/it)(talk) 22:29, 12 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
That’s fine by me too. I have made the change.
 Done: after consensus.
