Started updating and upgrading this article
[edit]Started updating and upgrading to acknowledge Federal Court native title decisions effectively confirming the Djungan are a people with continuing lore and customs for country within the area identified and mapped by Tindale 1974. I also note there has been a national heritage listing recording and proctecting Djungan beliefs and lore in the area and more which I will also try to integrate into this article. More soon.
PS I have priveledged the Djungan spelling in this update as this is the spelling used by the Federal Court in the cited decision, and it is the spelling used for the National Heritage listing still to be referenced, and this spelling is therefore, arguably, the more commonly used contemporary spelling? - I wouLd be wary of using the Federal Court as the default authority on these matters. While they must familiarize themselves with scholarship, it is the scholarly consensus that must fulfil that function, and then AIATSIS which draws on all the available scholarship but which is far more careful to give due weight to the contemporary indigenous views than the Court. This is important also because different groups within a cultural context like this have different preferences for such terminology, and AIATSIS is where these sensitivities are respected, rather than risking taking sides.(There is a native law and Australian law, and to privilege as the ultimate authority must be avoided. On this issue AIATSIS accepts both Kuku Djangun / Djungan Nishidani (talk) 13:57, 6 October 2026 (UTC)
Proposal to Move this article to Djungan as per WP:COMMONNAME and WP:CRITERIA
[edit]Hey Nishidani (talk), as "Djungan" is identified by AITSIS as an appropriate spelling, and as Djungan is the predominant modern spelling used by the group themselves, also in the legal native title determination (Archer v State of Queensland [2012] FCA 801), and primary archaeological and heritage assessments (e.g. David et al.), per WP:COMMONNAME and WP:CRITERIA I propose to move the article to Djungan if OK? Note I also would like to see this wikipedia article, which I am still upgrading, to more immediately appear near the top of google and other internet searches for the more common name 'Djungan'!
