Article accidentally makes it look like Gately was a fascist

[edit]

Consider this:

Because the National Front march was mentioned first - and, indeed, it will not be mentioned in any way that Gately was part of the group protesting the march until "During the surge by the SPG, they came into contact with the peaceful demonstrators in the march, driving them apart, as had happened with the IMG contingent. During this action several demonstrators were left on the ground; one of those was Kevin Gately." which is five sections into the article - the implication is that Gately was part of the National Front. I've tweaked things - a simple addition to the start of the second paragraph nips the implication in the bud - but this is a major mistake; I'm honestly shocked it didn't get caught at FAC. But then, it's the sort of thing where, if you know what it should be, you're not going to catch the implication as it's subtle, and if you don't know what it should be, it's one of those things everyone knows and therefore won't explicitly mention it so you're unlikely to catch that you were wrong. Doesn't come up often, but it's very easy to fall afoul of when it does. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 8.2% of all FPs. Currently celebrating his 600th FP! 11:18, 6 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

It doesn't imply or make it look as if he were a fascist - the second paragraph makes it clear the only violence was between the police and the anti-fascists. It wasn't "caught" at FAC because there was nothing to catch. A great number of people have been over the article in the two years since it was rewritten and no-one has been left confused by the wording so far. - SchroCat (talk) 11:41, 6 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

~2025-31260-57, please stop edit warring and DISCUSS the matter. The term is one used in a couple of the sources and is supported by a citation. Why you are deciding to vandalise the article by removing information supported by sources is beyond me, but desist. - SchroCat (talk) 17:38, 5 November 2025 (UTC

User SchroCat: Please stop making false claims about a source. Pleaeestop with your hypocrotical warnings. Please desist from adding opinion, pejorative, non-NPOV and is unsupported by any reference. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ~2025-31260-57 (talk • contribs)

Stop commenting on each other and discuss the content at issue. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 18:14, 5 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

I have already pointed out several times that the information is sourced. I'm not sure what else to say on the matter if someone doesn't believe it and accuses me of making "false claims". It's certainly untrue to describe it as "opinion, pejorative, non-NPOV and is unsupported by any reference": that's an utter falsehood. - SchroCat (talk) 19:13, 5 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
IP, the description "hard-left" press, which you were WP:EDITWARring to delete, refers to news sources that identify, or are known to align, with the far left on the political spectrum, such as the Socialist Worker, which is mentioned in the article. This description is supported by several sources cited in the article, including footnote [1], The Red Lion Square Disorders of 15 June 1974. Report of Inquiry by the Rt. Hon. Lord Justice Scarman, OBE If you have any sources that you can show are more authoritative, please discuss them here. Do not WP:EDITWAR. Instead, once you suggest a change and it is opposed, please follow the WP:BRD process. Also, you may wish to register a Wikipedia account for the reasons discussed here. -- Ssilvers (talk) 20:40, 5 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
