It appears that when they released these films on DVD they fucked up the entire numbering scheme, which has made sourcing things a bit of a pain. I think what happened is, Death Scenes -> Death Scenes 3: Los Angeles, Death Scenes 2 -> Death Scenes 1; Manson, Death Scenes 3 -> Death Scenes 2: Uncensored Scenes of Death. They appear to have kept the VHS subtitles the same (or at least the one on no. 2). This explains the weird metadata issues I was seeing and the contents summaries not matching the titles (e.g. Manson is only a big focus in Death Scenes 2, so "Death Scenes 1" being subtitled Manson...; it was also subtitled that on VHS when it was still called Death Scenes 2, same with the golden age hollywood stuff).

The VHS for Death Scenes 2 originally called it Death Scenes 2: Manson . The DVD is called "Death Scenes 1: Manson" (see severed-cinema review). "Death Scenes 3" was subtitled Los Angeles, not "LA Detective" There is also Death Scenes 2: Uncensored Scenes of Death , so by process of elimination I think was originally Death Scenes 3.

This TMDB thread agrees with me (movie/203963-death-scenes/discuss/5c53e2460e0a2662a4d0a815) "When the three Death Scenes films were released on video, they reordered them. So the 1989 film which is the original is the one usually listed as Death Scenes 3: L.A. Detective. It consists of Anton LaVey narrating a bunch of police crime photos from the 1930s, 40s and 50s. The film usually listed on DVD as Death Scenes 1: Manson is actually the second film in the series which was released in 1992 and is mostly archival video in color." (pretty sure it's Los Angeles and not LA Detective, though maybe it's different on the DVD inside...) IDK if Severed Cinema is reliable but this is a review of "Death Scenes 1: Manson", which it says is actually Death Scenes 2 on DVD.

Especially given the titles (e.g. Los Angeles applies only to Death Scenes 1, Manson was the subtitle of Death Scenes 2 on VHS, etc...) PARAKANYAA (talk) 21:39, 9 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

This 2012 Mondo film site seems to agree . Looking at the DVD cases it seems clear enough, because the films refer to the earlier ones in the series. And looking at the films, yeah, does seem to be the case. PARAKANYAA (talk) 21:53, 9 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Not RS but the fact here would be useful to add if it appeared in an RS . PARAKANYAA (talk) 22:08, 9 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Unrelated but this has some things . Seems marginal at best. PARAKANYAA (talk) 22:23, 9 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Something in this book but it doesn't seem like sigcov . PARAKANYAA (talk) 00:06, 10 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Reviews/sourcing in (i haven't checked if these are reliable yet) Film Threat 5, Flesh Out, Psychotronic Video 6, Brutarian 3. Headpress book review is also in the magazine. Descent (book), Maximum Rocknroll 158 (book), Re-FliX 2 (this covers all the dvds so if reliable would be useful...) Ecco Magazine 19.
Also, lovely, this whole mess is mentioned by Seelinger. PARAKANYAA (talk) 01:17, 10 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
The Horror Theory Reader has something? Might be brief. PARAKANYAA (talk) 03:19, 10 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
