  • ... that Cyril Karabus was convicted of manslaughter and forgery in 2004, a verdict he only learned about around a decade later?
  • Source: Bagraim, Michael (2013). "The Trial in Dubai: The Saga of Prof Cyril Karabus". Jewish Affairs. 68 (2): 5–11. ISSN 0021-6313. Ten years later, he found himself under arrest for murder and forgery ... Karabus also discovered that in his absence, the Abu Dhabi Court of First Instance had, on 23 March, 2004, found him guilty of manslaughter and forgery

QPQ: Done.

Overall: All good. I prefer the original hook. Could elaborate on how the original conviction came to be, but this doesn't affect the nomination for DYK. _dk (talk) 11:41, 8 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

The page now has a Template:Disputed tag, so per WP:DYKTAG it cannot appear on the Main Page until this is resolved. Reopening this nomination; hopefully this gets resolved quickly. Epicgenius (talk) 20:36, 6 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. @Epicgenius: Is this ready to go now? Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 23:51, 18 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Narutolovehinata5, since the issue seems to be resolved, yes, this can be re-promoted. Epicgenius (talk) 00:15, 19 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

Dates are all over the place

[edit]

Lead: convicted 2004, arrested 2012, acquitted and released 2013 Body:

  • "Karabus was convicted of manslaughter and forgery in absentia on 23 March 2004, something he was unaware of until his arrest over a decade later." (emphasis mine)
  • "On 17 August 2013, Karabus had a layover at the Zayed International Airport." (emphasis mine)
  • " The case was postponed 13 times over an eight-month period," (he was arrested in August, and found not guilty in March, which is 7, not 8 months later)

The article seems to have close paraphrasing from (and perhaps from other sources, some of the major sources are not accessible to me). E.g.

  • "The Professional Ethics and Standards Committee (PESC) of the University of the Witwatersrand’s Faculty of Health Sciences announced its backing for sanctions[...]The KwaZulu-Natal Managed Care Coalition (KZNMCC) and the Independent Practitioners Foundation also withdrew their support of the Africa Health Conference. In support of this stance and in solidarity with their colleague, many academics withdrew their participation from the conference, and the sessions on obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, nursing and sports medicine were ‘postponed’."

vs.

  • "In addition, the Professional Ethics and Standards Committee of the University of the Witwatersrand's Faculty of Health Sciences and the University of Cape Town's Medical School called out the UAE and supported sanctions on the country. The KwaZulu-Natal Managed Care Coalition and the Independent Practitioners Foundation withdrew support from the Africa Health Exhibition. Several academics scheduled to attend the conference withdrew in protest of the UAE and to show support to Karabus, and the sessions on obsterics, gynaecology, paediatrics, nursing, and sports medicine were postponed."

My fault, he was arrested in 2012, not 2013. I have changed 'over' to 'around'; I assume sources use 'over' since they're counting from 2002, when this alleged crime took place. The month thing is correct? It's 8 months? Counting both August and March (I guess neither were a full month, but it's going by the months of the year, not the actual 30-ish days periods months go by). As for the final part, I've rephrased it. jolielover♥talk 12:34, 6 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
31 August to 1 September wouldn't be 2 months either. 7 months and a few days isn't 8 months. Thank you for the changes. Fram (talk) 13:22, 6 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
He was arrested 18 August, not 31. jolielover♥talk 02:12, 7 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Jolielover I think the "31 August to 1 September" was simply a rhetorical example Fram used to argue that counting based on calendar months alone is not advisable. @Fram, since it seems your points have been addressed, can the "disputed" tag be removed now? This article is currently a DYK and GA nominee, both of which can be held up by such a tag. Toadspike [Talk] 21:52, 10 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
