Nomenclature -

[edit]

One column of the table in § Technical information is headed Update management, but there is no explanation of what the term means. The obvious answer is batch editors, but what appears in that column is configuration control software. There should be an explicit explanation. -- Shmuel (Seymour J.) Technical information

[edit]

Should the table be in alphabetical order? Should it include all the IBM mainframe systems listed in § General information, e.g., MVS (OS/VS2 R2 through R3.8), MVS (MVS/SE through MVS/ESA), OS/390? -- Shmuel (Seymour J.) Metz Username:Chatul (talk) 17:46, 28 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

OK, we should also consider it as a family, as Linux is considered gtp (talk) 07:04, 8 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Trimming "Nomenclature" section

[edit]

The "Nomenclature" section used to contain, among other things, these lines:

GPL2
GPL3
Per user
The fee depends on the maximum number of users concurrently logged on.

This makes it look like GPL2 and GPL3 involve fees, which, of course, is nonsense.

I was about to change it to something like

GPL2
GPL3
Versions 2 and 3 of the GNU General Public License, which do not require fees.
Per user
The fee depends on the maximum number of users concurrently logged on.

But then I realized, this is not the only issue with that section. Contrary to the introduction "For purposes of this article the terms used are", most of those terms are not used — in fact, other than "BSD" and "bundled", none of the other terms appear anywhere else in the article. So I'm deleting most of that whole part of the introduction. —scs (talk) 03:33, 10 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

"3rd party" means "Third-party"

[edit]

Windows 1.0 was the first capable to run on a 3rd party machine (separate from both Microsoft and the human-user), as modern OSs do. gtp (talk) 17:50, 31 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
